Masseter muscle reflex evoked by tapping on osseointegrated Frialit implants.

Comparison was made of the masseter muscle reflexes evoked by tapping on osseointegrated single-tooth aluminum oxide implants, and on natural teeth in nine patients. Tapping on eight out of nine patients evoked an inhibitory masseter muscle reflex, whereas tapping on all of the natural teeth evoked an inhibitory reflex. The threshold for this reflex was clearly elevated in implants compared to natural teeth. The pathway for the impulses responsible for this reflex and the clinical implications of the elevated threshold are discussed.

Aureobasidium infection of the jaw.

A 32-yr-old white North American male resident of Norway presented with an asymptomatic radiolucency first identified 3 yr after the removal of an impacted mandibular right third molar in Southern California 16 yr previously. Surgical exploration revealed an intraosseous cavity filled with a black, homogeneous, gelatinous substance thought to be foreign material, but which was diagnosed histologically as containing black yeasts. Cultivation of a microbiologic sample for 6 wk grew black yeast-like colonies. The yeast isolate was identified as an Aureobasidium species different from the typical A. pullulans. A blood sample was negative with regard to antibodies both with double diffusion technique and ELISA. Also, examination with respect to dermatologic manifestations gave negative results. Flucytocin 10 g/d was administered systemically for 30 d. Six months postoperatively bone regeneration was satisfactory radiologically.

[Frialit ceramic implants--a four-year follow-up study].

Sixty-two ceramic implants (Frialit) were installed in 53 patients with agenesia or loss of single teeth due to traumata or infection. Sixty-three per cent of the implants were operated in immediately after tooth extraction, whereas the rest were installed in a healed bony alveolar ridge. Eighty-five per cent of the implants were replacements for maxillary incisors. The average observation period was 4 years. During this period 10 implants were removed due to lack of osseointegration. Seven of these implants were lost in the healing period, the remaining 3 were removed after installation of the suprastructure. Eighty-four percent of the implants were successful after 4 years. Trauma in the maxillary region have caused fracture of the implants in 5 patients. Such incidents create therapeutic problems difficult to solve satisfactorily.

Nasopalatine duct cyst.

A retrospective and follow-up study of 35 cases of nasopalatine cysts was performed. The retrospective part of the investigation comprised clinical, radiological and histological observations including pre-, intra- and post-operative findings. The follow-up included clinical and radiological observations. The results indicated that most cysts are found during routine clinical and radiological examination. Subjective and objective clinical symptoms were reported in 50% and 59% of the cases, respectively, the most common being swelling and pain. It was not possible to confirm any specific etiological factor. In 97% of the cases, maximum cyst diameter varied between 1.0-2.5 cm and 84% appeared round or ovoid. Histological examination revealed a high frequency of cuboidal and/or columnar epithelial lining, 2-3 cell layers thick, in combination with an adjacent zone of hyalinized capsular tissue with low-grade inflammation. Radiologically these cases exhibited a well-defined cortical border. In the follow-up study, 84% of the patients exhibited complete clinical healing with no objective or subjective symptoms. Complete bone regeneration was seen radiologically within 3 years in 82% of the cases examined. The results of the present study were compared to those obtained in previous reports.
