A study of the capacity for regeneration of rat and human Leydig cells.

The capacity of Leydig cells for regeneration was investigated in 12 patients with prostatic carcinoma, who underwent subcapsular orchidectomy, and in rats after testicular necrosis produced by cadmium chloride. In rats, reappearance of Leydig cells originating from the tunica albuginea could be demonstrated by histology. Testosterone concentrations increased parallel to regeneration of Leydig cells, while LH concentrations declined. In contrast to these findings, no rise of testosterone concentrations could be observed in patients up to 8 months after subcapsular orchidectomy. Human Leydig cells seem to have no capacity for regeneration, or endocrine function, despite the fact that some of these cells, which are present morphologically in the tunica albuginea or spermatic cord, remained.

[The use of gentamicin-polymethylmethacrylate chains for the treatment of soft-tissue wounds in the region of the urinary tract (author's transl)].

Bactericidal concentrations of gentamicin can be attained by implanting at the site of the infection pellet chains of gentamicin-polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) that permit the protracted release of the antibiotic for several weeks. Satisfactory healing of the wound was achieved in two cases of extensively infected soft-tissue wounds in the region of the urinary tract after temporary implantation of gentamicin-PMMA chains.

[Testosterone serum concentrations after subcapsular orchiectomy (author's transl)].

Twelve patients with prostatic carcinoma in stage C or D underwent subcapsular orchiectomy. Testosterone serum concentrations were measured by radioimmunoassay before and up to eight months following orchiectomy. After an initial decrease, testosterone concentrations remained between 0.42 ng and 0.67 ng/ml serum throughout the observation period. Stimulation with 5000 IU hCG/day for three days did not cause an increase in testosterone concentrations.

[In vitro ultrasound pictures of kidney tumors].

In 5 patients with malignant renal tumours apart from in-vivo-sonogrammes ultrasound pictures of the operatively removed perfused preparations of renal tumours were additionally performed. The nephrosonogramme intracorporally showed the typical ultrasound picture of a tumour with coarsely disseminated echostructure in acoustically homogenous normal renal parenchyma. In the extracorporal sonogramme the tumour imposed as relatively echo-poor zone compared with the normal renal parenchyma with strong echos. The loss of the extracorporal turgor is discussed as cause of the reversion of the intensity of the echo pattern. In 3 other tumour-free renal preparations the acoustic reversion phenomenon of the normal renal parenchyma was confirmed in the extra-corporal renal preparation.

[Monitoring the effectiveness of conservative treatment of benign prostatic hypertrophy by means of uroflowmetry].

96 patients with benign hyperplasia of the prostate and dysuric complaints in stage I and beginning stage II were treated conservatively and medicamentously up to 12 months. In the collective of patients subdivided into 4 groups the conservative therapy was carried out in 3 groups with different phyto-preparations and in one group with gestonorone capromate. The voiding of the bladder was examined by means of uroflowmetry in intervals of four weeks before and after therapy. A clear success of the effect appeared only in the group of patients treated with gestonorone capromate. With phyto-preparations uroflowmetrically no significant effect on the disturbed voiding of the bladder could be established. The conservative treatment of the benign hyperplasia of the prostate should be carried out under uroflowmetrical control, in order not to miss the time of a necessary operative intervention.

[Roentgenologic findings in carcinoma of the prostate (author's transl)].

Discussion of the radiodiagnostic findings in patients with carcinoma of the prostate, especially of tumor changes of prostatic ureterocystography. Lymphography was carried out in 154 patients with carcinoma of the prostate. Lymphnodes metastatic were found more frequently and earlier than skeletal metastases. A special lymphographic symptom is total metastatic replacement of lymphnodes by tumor spread.
