Why do rich countries prefer free trade over free migration? The role of the modern welfare state.

"According to traditional trade theory (Heckscher-Ohlin), free trade and free migration are equivalent measures of economic integration leading both to an equalization of factor prices. This prediction is in sharp opposition to the observed preference of rich countries for free trade over free migration. We provide an explanation for this inconsistency: the redistribution policies in the countries. Social welfare in countries with a relatively small number of low-skilled native workers is higher with free trade than with free migration due to redistribution of income towards immigrating workers."

[Shadow price and income concepts in the economic theory of fertility].

"This paper deals with endogenous shadow prices and therefore non-linear budget constraints with endogenous income. In contrast to the quantity-quality-models in the economic theory of fertility, here, these main features result from assumptions concerning home production technology. The distinction between observable and 'true' change in income is crucial. Only the latter is relevant for microeconomic decision calculus. The concept of superiority is related to true changes in income, in the case of children as well. Nonetheless the presented model is able to explain negative observable income effects with respect to the number of children." (SUMMARY IN ENG)

Influence of exercise in water on hormonal, metabolic and adrenergic receptor changes in man.

We investigated hormonal, metabolic, and cardiovascular adaptations as well as changes of alpha 2- and beta 2-adrenergic receptors in response to three different exercise performances in water: 1000 m fin swimming with or without a neoprene suit and, additionally, 600 m diving with a breathing apparatus while performing several tasks. Eight male divers participated in the study. Blood samples were taken at rest on land, 10 min after water immersion, immediately after exercise, and after 20 min recovery. Both free and sulfoconjugated norepinephrine (NE) increased exercise-dependently. Moreover, heat loss in water caused elevation of plasma free NE. Free epinephrine (EPI) increases showed a highly significant correlation with NE except during fin swimming with a neoprene suit where EPI concentrations were constantly higher. ACTH and cortisol levels rose during exercise and paralleled those of plasma NE. Plasma aldosterone decreased in response to water immersion at rest. Blood volume regulating hormones such as plasma renin, aldosterone, and vasopressin were significantly higher during physical exercise. Moreover, increased pressure conditions during diving caused significantly higher secretion rates of all of these hormones, resulting in a higher systolic blood pressure. This clinical issue might be considered when examining diving ability. Lipolysis was elevated to the same degree after the three exercise schedules had been applied. As expected, plasma glucose also increased during physical activity. The lactate values observed after fin swimming, but not after diving with a breathing apparatus were closely related to NE. The lowest lactate levels were obtained during air-assisted diving.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Indomethacin enhances in vitro histamine release induced by anti-IgE and Ca-ionophore but inhibits C5a-induced release reactions from basophils of atopics and normals.

Preincubation of peripheral leukocytes from atopics and normals significantly enhanced histamine release induced by anti-IgE and calcium ionophore. On the other hand, there was a significant inhibition (ca. 40%) of C5a-induced histamine release by indomethacin both in atopics and controls. In the group of patients with atopic eczema, anti-IgE-induced histamine release was significantly higher than in controls both without and with indomethacin.

Changes of cell surface configuration and regulation of cell proliferation.

The electric surface charge configuration of 3T3 and SV40-3T3 cells was characterized by determining the product of electrophoretic mobility of the cells times the viscosity of suspension medium. This quantity could be shown to change with temperature and/or treatment with calf serum or trypsin in close correlation with the effects of these agents on characteristics of cell proliferation. The present results, taken together with those of earlier studies on cell-electrophoresis and characterization of lipid constituents of the cells, support the hypothesis of a lateral phase separation in the plasmamembrane as triggering process in stimulation of proliferation of resting normal cells.
