Lipoprotein(a) and exercise.

Plasma levels of lipoprotein(a), total cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, apoprotein A1 and apoprotein B were assessed in 10 healthy, untrained volunteers subjected to a bicycle ergometric exercise equal to 50% of individual VO2max, followed by increasing loads until muscular exhaustion. Blood samples were taken before the exercise, immediately afterwards and then at 12-hourly intervals for a 72 hours period. Subsequently, the same parameters were evaluated for 8 long-distance runners during the XXIII New York Marathon, with blood samples being taken before and after the race, and then after one month of detraining. After the exercise, lipoprotein(a) in untrained subjects began to decrease significantly from the 24th hour on and remained lower than baseline levels up till the 72nd hour. After detraining, lipoprotein(a) in marathon runners increased significantly both with respect to basal values and especially to post-race values. Modifications of the other metabolic parameters evaluated in both tests were negligible and predictable. In the two groups of subjects examined, no correlation was found between lipoprotein (a) and the anthropometrical data and metabolic parameters considered.

Effects of anabolic steroids, testosterone, and HGH on blood lipids and echocardiographic parameters in body builders.

To evaluate the metabolic or cardiovascular effects induced by self-administration of human growth hormone (HGH) alone or combined with testosterone and anabolic steroids, we conducted a study with 15 male body builders. Of these, 8 (control group) did not take any hormonal substances; 6 (experimental group) self-administered testosterone, anabolic steroids, and HGH for 6 weeks in various dosages; 1 subject self-administered only HGH for an equal period of time. At the end of the period of treatment with the hormonal combination, the experimental group continued for 2 additional weeks with anabolic steroids and testosterone only. All maintained the same, unaltered type and intensity of training, and constant diet. Before the beginning of treatment with hormonal substances, after 6 weeks, and at the end of treatment (for a total of 8 weeks), they were tested for total and HDL-cholesterol (t-chol and HDL-chol), apolipoproteins A-1 and B (apo A-1 and B), and triglycerides (tg). Before the start and after 6 weeks, an echocardiographic examination was performed to assess left ventricular dimensions and function in all 15 body builders. The most interesting result is a significant decrease of HDL-chol and apo A-1 derived from self-administration of anabolic steroids and HGH together.

The influence of ubiquinone (Co Q10) on the metabolic response to work.

Ubiquinone (Co Q10) is a natural substance suitable for therapeutic use in cardiology and in the treatment of some muscular diseases. It might therefore be used during strenuous exercise (as in athletic competitions), especially in the presence of metabolic modifications which may justify its use. For this purpose, we have evaluated the effect of prolonged treatment with Co Q10 (100 mg/day per os for one month) on the biological changes induced by prolonged work on an ergometer bicycle (equal to about 50% of the single VO2max per 60 m'), immediately followed by exhaustive work (25 watts increase every 2 m'). From the venous blood of 12 healthy untrained subjects (students, volunteers, mean age 25.7 and body mass index 23.3) we examined some biological parameters [free fatty acids (FFA), free glycerol, lactate, glucose, insulin, CK] before, at the end of aerobic work, at the end of exhaustive work, and after 30 and 60 m' of the recovery phase. The same indexes, measured after identical times and work, were evaluated after one month of treatment with Co Q10. The only relevant modifications observed were those concerning FFA: at the end of aerobic work and after the administration of the drug, lower levels were reached (before, 1011 +/- 329 microEq/l; after 790 +/- 392; p less than 0.05); the same trend was observed at the end of the exhaustive work (1031 +/- 320 microEq/l vs 826 +/- 387; p less than 0.05). At the subsequent times, as well as for the other biological parameters examined, we did not observe any variation before or after the period of treatment.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Effect of boxing on some metabolic indices of muscular contraction.

Muscular contraction, especially if it is protracted or particularly intense, causes notable changes in the substrate and enzymes involved. Marked changes have been found in the serum levels of myoglobin and CK in individuals subjected to very stressful physical work. This phenomenon has usually been attributed to the repeated and intense muscular traumas inherent in certain sporting activities. In the light of these facts, the authors decided to perform a study on amateur boxers aimed at measuring the difference between simple muscular work (shadow boxing) and traumatic activity (real boxing) in terms of their effect on a number of humoral parameters, especially myoglobin and CK. The serum levels of these two latter substances were found to increase more after real boxing than after shadow boxing.

[Mineral salts and water in the diet of the athlete].

Hydroelectrolyte disturbances, even if modest, are capable of negatively modifying sports performance. When the sweating, that accompanies sports activity, is abundant, it is the means by which the greatest quantity of water and salt are lost. A correct diet can prevent any of the manifestations connected to an altered hydroelectrolyte equilibrium, especially when the activity is very prolonged. A potassium or magnesium defect, even if they rarely reach serum levels below the norm, are frequently encountered after sports activity of an intermediate time span (2-3 hrs.), during which the athlete rarely eats. Variations of sodium and/or calcium are instead difficult to appreciate.

[Baseball during the growing years: repercussions on the cardiovascular system (echocardiographic evaluation)].

The influence upon the cardiovascular system of a period (21 months) of physical training program for baseball was studied in 40 normal children (aged 8 to 10 years) in an experimental (20) and control (20) group. The echocardiographic changes observed at the end of the period proved to be substantially alike in both groups. The physiopathological involvements linked to the baseball training in the prepubescent age are discussed.

[Cardiac and metabolic investigations during 24 hour endurance skiing (Pinzolo, Italy)].

In the "24-hour Cross Country Ski Race of Pinzolo" skiers attempt to cover as long as possible distances within 24 hours. Cardiac and metabolic changes of 6 volunteer cross country skiers, aging 29 to 39 years, participating to the individual competition, were analysed. All skiers had negative clinical examination and resting standard 12-lead ECG, except for one who had a midsystolic click on auscultation suggesting the presence of mitral valve prolapse. They were submitted to 48-hour Holter monitoring (HM) going from 3:00 p.m. of the day before the race up to one hour after the end of competition. The period of HM going from 3 p.m. of the day before to 1.00 p.m. of the day of race (one hour before the start) was utilized as control as concerns arrhythmias, ST-T wave and QT interval changes observed during the period of competition. In all 6 skiers, standard 12-lead ECG was again recorded on completion of race. The following serum indexes were obtained in basal conditions and within one hour after the end of race: electrolytes (Na+, K+), Myoglobina (MG) and the enzymes GOT, GPT, LDH, CK and CK-MB. Complete urine analysis was also obtained before and immediately after the race. The distance covered by the skiers ranged from 189 to 260 Km, except for the skier with systolic click who covered 95.7 Km within 12 hour and then retired from the race for acute pain of knee.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

[Effect of acute administration of verapamil on various metabolic parameters in healthy humans].

Calcium-antagonist drugs have been used for sometime in various forms of cardiac disease. Some of these molecules, in the initial phase of administration, show a net increase in the FFA liberation. So far it is not certain whether this behavior also refers to other molecules. Therefore we studied the action of verapamil on FFA, on glycemia and on insulinemia. The drug was administered orally (single dose of 80 mg) and intravenously (single dose of 10 mg in 45 m'). 15 healthy subjects were examined, 7 women and 8 men, aged from 19 to 45. These subjects were also used as controls, administered with placebo. Our findings show that this calcium-antagonist drug is not capable of interfering with the studied metabolic parameters.
