[Hypoxia as a modality to correct disturbances in bone oxygen uptake at various static-kinetic conditions].

Osteodystrophy models consisted in removing weight loading from hind limbs and rats' immobilization; disturbances in bone oxygen uptake were quelled by induced gaseous environment with low PO2. Unloading of the hind limbs for 28 days was found to decrease oxygen uptake by fragments of the iliac bone, and oxygen pressure in m. gastrocnemius. These parameters were unchanged in atmosphere with 12% of oxygen. Motor restraint of rats in hypoxic atmosphere leads to less marked reductions in oxygen demand in iliac fragments and oxygen pressure in m. gastrocnemius as compared with breathing ambient air.

Acute Disease↗

[The build-up of human reserve potential by exposure to intermittent normobaric hypoxia].

Effects of intermittent hypoxia at normal pressure (NPH) on physical and mental performance were studied in 32 essentially healthy human subjects. The 24-d NPH cycle was found to increase the maximal aerobic capacity as well as physical and mental performance. Growth of reserve and efficiency of the main physiological systems stipulated this gain in physical and mental performance. The authors make a presumption that NPH can be a part of preflight training, a measure to maintain an adequate level of human performance during orbital mission, and a method of rehabilitation post flight.

Adaptation, Physiological↗

[A method for diagnosing a disturbance in bronchial patency].

The authors elaborated the diagnostic method of bronchial disfunction by phonopulmography and gas mixtures with different density (two or three times lower than air). Using this method it is possible to do quantitative and qualitative estimation of initial bronchial disturbances. It may be used for express-diagnostic in ambulatory and clinical conditions.

Bronchial Diseases↗

[Effects of lipid additions on oxygen supply of skeletal muscles].

The experiment was done on rabbits which were fed for 4-5 weeks a diet with sunflower oil or butter (0.2 gm/100 gm of weight). It was shown that oxygen supply of skeletal muscle could change due to structural of functional modifications of hepato-parenchymatous barrier caused by dietary factors.

Animals↗

[The use of an artificial mountain climate for treating and rehabilitating chronic bronchitis patients].

Sixty patients with obstructive and nonobstructive bronchitis were examined before and after high-altitude artificial climate treatment in a special climatotherapy box. Clinical and functional findings revealed a reduction of bronchial obstruction, increase of pulmonary capacity, improvement of the rate and aerodynamics, increase of local and regional lung ventilation. The results were better in obstructive bronchitis.

Adult↗

[The functional and structural changes in the hematoparenchymatous barrier of the skeletal muscle during starvation].

The data obtained suggest that an increasing oxygen permeability of hematoparenchymatous barrier is a result of structural and chemical changes of biomembranes in rabbits after 7 days of starvation. A significant increase in desaturation of lipids and phospholipids, a decrease of cholesterol level in cytoplasmic and basal membranes were shown along with modifications of vascular endothelium of a metabolic type.

[The use of echo- and scintigraphic study of the biliary system in chronic cholecystitis].

Data are reported of a study of the functional state of the biliary in 50 patients with chronic cholecystitis by means of complex employment of dynamic echo- and cholecystography and dynamic computerized gamma-hepatobilioscintigraphy. It was found that dynamic echo- and cholecystography proved highly efficient indicating that ultrasound tomography is of importance not only the diagnosis of structural but also functional disorders in cholecystitis, for the choice of optimal tactics and evaluation of the efficacy of therapeutic measures excluding radiation treatment.

[Effect of starvation on respiratory reactivity in inbred rats].

The 5-day starvation, with water ad libitum, decreased the reactivity of the respiration system to acute hypoxic hypoxia (11% O2) in spontaneously hypertensive (SH) rats and had no such effect in Krushinskiĭ-Molodkina (KM) rats. The difference in the responses of KM and SH rats to starvation and the action of hypoxic gas mixture shows that the respiratory system reactivity has an obvious genetic component.

[Effect of hyperoxic gas mixtures on the mass transfer of oxygen through the hematoparenchymatous barrier].

In 21 rabbits, the process of oxygen mass transfer through the hemato-parenchymatous barrier conditions of hyperoxia with 80% O2 in inhaled mixture, was shown to decrease 6-7-fold and to be determined by a high partial O2 pressure rather than physical properties of accompanying gas. The protective properties of hyperbarism are equally evident both in nitrogen-oxygen and in helium-oxygen mixtures, restricting the increment of O2 tension in tissues.

Animals↗

[Diffusion capacity of the hematoparenchymal barrier for oxygen in the breathing of helium-oxygen gas mixtures].

In 25 rabbits with local anesthesia, recordings of partial oxygen pressure in the hindlimb arterial and venous blood, oxygen tension in muscles and some other parameters followed by calculation of the muscle hematoparenchymatous barrier, revealed that, in inhalation of normoxic helio--oxygen mixture, the hematoparenchymatous barrier's diffusion capacity for oxygen increases as compared with the analogous value in breathing with air. In inhalation of hypoxic helio--oxygen and nitrogen--oxygen mixtures (11% O2), the barrier's diffusion capacity for oxygen proves higher than in breathing with respective normoxic gas mixtures. A possible pharmacological effect of helium influence upon plasmatic membranes of the hematoparenchymatous barrier's components is discussed.

[Contribution of I. M. Sechenov to the development of respiratory physiology and biophysics].

Analysis of I. M. Sechenov's scientific heritage, of the data cited in his "Autobiographic Notes", and of his contemporaries' memoirs showed that problems of physiology and biophysics of respiration closely followed the problems of central nervous system and psychology in the scientist's creative work. The principle of resumed vacuum is shown to have major significance for extraction of the blood gases and invention of absorptiometer underlying further modifications of the model. I. M. Sechenov's studies in binding of CO2 by different blood components and saline solutions, in interrelationship of oxygen binding by erythrocytes and output of carbonic acid, in solubility of carbonic acid in water, as well as other problems studied by the eminent Russian physiologist, are reviewed.
