[Identification of an alien chromosome in the common wheat line multi 6R].

The chromosome of Agropyron intermedium (Host) Beauv. substituting chromosome 6D has been identified in the karyotype of the Triticum aestivum L. line Multi 6R with the use of C-banding. The alien chromosome, temporarily designated 6Ag1, contains gene(s) of the resistance to the Saratov population of Puccinia recondita Rob. ex. Desm. f. tritici. It has been demonstrated that the resistance gene(s) is(are) highly efficient and that chromosome 6Ag1 is preferably transferred through gametes.

[Transmission of 5R chromosomes via gametes and its influence on spring bread wheat somatic embryoidogenesis in vitro].

Transmission of chromosomes 5R and 5A via gametes and its effect on somatic embryoidogenesis have been studied with the use of the model 5R(5A) substitution line L2837 = L503/Secale cereale L., cultivar Saratovskaya 5/L503, where L503 is a cultivar of spring bread wheat. It has been found that the frequencies of transmission of univalent chromosomes 5R and 5A determined in experiments on F1 reciprocal hybrids with cultivar Saratovskaya 29 do not reflect their frequencies in the self-pollinated offspring of F1 hybrids; the frequency of transmission of chromosomes 5R and 5A depends on the genotypes of both the recipient cultivar and the donor rye cultivar; and the 5R(5A) substitution in cultivar L503 significantly increases the parameters of somatic embryoidogenesis in vitro in explants from inflorescences.

[The effect of Lr19-translocation on in vitro androgenesis and inheritance of leaf-rust resistance in DH3 lines and F2 hybrids of common wheat].

Leaf-rust resistance and androgenesis were studied in the anther cultures of Triticum aestivum L., which included Saratovskaya 29 cultivar, the isogenic line Ps29, and three F1 hybrids (L503/S55, L504/S58, ATS7/L1063) with 7DS-7DL-7Ae#1L translocation of Lr19 gene (Lr19 translocation) from Agropyron elongatum (Host) P.B. The Lr19 translocation was shown to affect the induction of embryogenesis and green plant regeneration. The frequencies of Lr19 translocation differed in F2 hybrids obtained by traditional hybridization and in sets of DH lines obtained in F1 anther cultures derived from the same combinations of T. aestivum parental forms. The number of leaf-rust resistant genotypes tended to decrease. The frequency of Lr19 translocation in the set of DH3 lines derived from F1 L504/S58 was significantly lower than in other sets of DH3 lines and F2 hybrid populations.

[Dynamics of genetic variation of Sartov cultivars of common wheat Triticum aestivum L. (from the gliadin-coding locus) after a an 80-year period of scientific selection].

Based on analysis of gliadin patterns in common wheat cultivars developed at the Research Institute of Agriculture of the Southeast, profile dynamics in gliadin loci has been surveyed for the period of over eight decades. It was shown that long-term breeding of the wheat cultivars involved gradual replacement of alleles characteristic of ancient cultivars for those widely spread in the world, which are probably linked with alleles that currently confer advantage to their carriers. The process of reduction of inter-population genetic diversity in wheat (with special reference to the allele frequency dynamics at gliadin loci) is discussed. This process is responsible for genetic erosion of the species.

[Evaluating the significance of differences between variants].

Experimental results of multiple comparisons for Tukey's, Newman-Kuels', Duncans' tests and for the t-test are compared. When the number of variants is more than two, the t-test is shown to reduce the value of the least significant difference, so that its use for multiple comparisons is incorrect. Duncan's multiple range test tends to increase the value of significant differences. The adequacy of Tukey's and Newman-Keuls' tests to the F-test is established.
