[Relaparotomy. Problems of terminology].

The authors discuss the term "relaparotomy" and such its definitions as "early", "delayed", "late", "elective", "targeted", analyze different classifications of relaparotomies, propose their own definition of this term based on objective criteria of general reaction to surgical stress in the form of Seli[symbol: see text] adaptation syndrome which has definite duration (60 days). This fact may be regarded as a clinical criterion of determination of relaparotomy's terms. Surgery may be named as relaparotomy when it is performed in terms of adaptation syndrome (60 days). If surgery is performed after the end of adaptation syndrome it must be regarded as repeated operation.

[Mechanism of oxyhemoglobin oxidation induced by hydrogen peroxide].

The process of oxyhemoglobin oxidation initiated by hydrogen peroxide in low (10(-7) M) concentrations was investigated. It was found, that H2O2 in this concentration is able to induce the process of chain oxidation of oxyhemoglobin to methemoglobin. The following observations indicate that the process is essentially the chain reaction: 1) The amount of the methemoglobin in haem groups, produced in the reaction, exceed by 20 times the quantity of hydrogen, added initially, to induce the oxidation. 2) Catalase stopped this process at any stage of the reaction. This fact implies that the chain process involves generation of new molecules of H2O2 in the course of oxidation of oxyhemoglobin. The chain reaction proceeded only in the presence of oxygen. But if oxygen was introduced into hemoglobin solution, preincubated with H2O2 in vacuum, than again the oxidation of hemoglobin developed. Apparently, H2O2 in low concentrations appears, mainly, as an inductor of the oxyhemoglobin autooxidation.

[Role of the neurogenic component in post-resuscitation disorders of cardiovascular regulation].

The reactivity of the cardiovascular system in the first 3 hours after 20-minute isolated compression ischemia of the brain was studied in experiments on dogs. Changes of baroreflex regulation in short-term clamping of the carotid arteries and in reduced pressure in the aorta as well as disorders of compensatory potentials of the circulatory system in acute blood loss were revealed. The fact that sympathicotonia increases was established. It is concluded that a search for methods for correction of posthypoxic disorders of neuroreflex regulation of the cardiovascular system is necessary.

[An assessment of epidemic outbreaks of salmonellosis connected with poultry plant production].

The causes of the simultaneous rise of salmonellosis morbidity induced by S. enteritidis among the population of three towns in the Perm region were studied. The study revealed the leading role of eggs and chicken meat as factors contributing to the transfer of this infection to the population of different territories, commonly supplied with the products of one poultry plant. The contamination of eggs and chickens with S. enteritidis occurred at the plant due to Salmonella infection of chickens, parallel with the use of nonbalanced mixed fodder, originally intended for feeding swine. Analysis of the epidemic and epizootic processes of Salmonella infection in this epidemic situation made it possible to reliably establish the factors contributing to the transfer of the infective agent and the site of contamination.

[Study of the action of immunomodulator T-activin on electric properties of plasma membranes of thymus cells by the use of fluorescent probes].

T-activin alters the electric properties of plasmatic membranes of the T-activin treated suspension of mouse (CBAX X057B1) F1 thymic cells. These alterations were registered by means of negative charged fluorescent probe l-anilino-naphthalene-8-sulfonate (ANS) and positive charged 4-(p-dimethylaminostyryl)-1-methylpyridinium (DSM) by measurement of their fluorescence in the individual thymic cell. Apparently, T-activin leads to depolarization of transmembrane potential on plasmatic membrane of thymic cells. It seems that action of T-activin is similar to the effect of polycations, which alter cells ionic streams during lymphocyte activation. However, there is a version, that T-activin acts like neuraminidase, but it is activity less expressed.

Enzyme immuno assay for the detection of virus specific IgG and IgM antibody in patients with haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome.

Consecutive serum samples collected from 235 patients with Haemorrhagic Fever with Renal Syndrome (HFRS), between two days and two years after onset of disease, have been analysed for the presence of IgG and IgM type of antibodies specific for Hanta-viruses. The sera were screened in parallel by a newly developed indirect Immuno Enzyme Assay (EIA) in parallel with Indirect Immunofluorescent Antibody Assay (IFA). In both tests the Hantaan virus strain 76-118 was used as the antigen. The EIA was much more sensitive than the IFA test for the detection of IgM type antibodies. With the indirect EIA IgM type antibodies against Hantaan virus 76-118 have been detected in HFRS patient's sera from the second day of illness indicating the usefulness of this test for the early serological diagnosis of this disease.

Physiological responses to sustained isometric contractions during one- and two-armed work. Role of muscle mass on cardiovascular responses to isometric work.

Cardiovascular and ventilatory responses were investigated during one- and two-armed isometric contractions at the same level of maximum voluntary contraction force (MVC). Significant differences were observed in heart rate, blood pressure, pulse arrival time, and oxygen intake in the contractions as compared with each other. These findings contradict the generally accepted view that cardiovascular responses at the same relative force in isometric muscle contractions, irrespective of the size of muscle mass engaged, are equal.

[Improvement of the outcome of treatment of acute cholecystitis].

The experience of treatment of patients with acute cholecystitis in the Leningrad Institute of Medical Emergency Service for 15 years (1964--1978) is analyzed. The general lethality of patients treated at the Institute equals 1,9%. Postoperative lethality is 2,3%.

[Use of fluorescent probes for detecting structural reorganizations in the membranes of the hepatic endoplasmic network during the maintenance of rats on an atherogenic diet].

Prolonged feeding of rats with a full-value semi-synthetic diet or diet enriched with cholesterol provoked material changes in the lipid content (the molar ratio of cholesterol/phospholipids) in the liver endoplastic reticulum, in the functional activity (the activity of the membrane-bound glucoso-6-phosphatase) and in the physical structure of the membranes. The changes were detected by means of the fluorescent probes (pyrene, 4-dimethylaminochalcone, 1-anilinonaphthalene-8-sulfonate). All the changes were more pronounced in liver microsomes of rats fed with the atherogenic diet. Fluorescence of the probes in microsomes and in model lipid membranes (liposomes) containing varying amount of cholesterol was compared to find that in vivo changes in the physical properties of microsomal membranes do not completely reduce to the effects consequent on membrane enriching with cholesterol.
