Ovine LH is needed for differentiation of juvenile Leydig cells and for their maintenance and steroidogenic potential, while FSH is necessary for Sertoli cell activity and spermatogonial multiplication suggesting that LH is steroidogenic hormone and FSH is gametogenic in the developing pigeon, C. livia. Homoplastic pituitary extract is more potent than ovine LH + FSH in stimulating gametogenic and endocrine components of the developing testis.

The influence of the graded doses of progesterone and progestational antiandrogen, cyproterone acetate, is studied on the vaginal cycles, follicular dynamics and steroidogenic potential of the ovaries and adrenal glands in neonatally androgenised rats with persistent vaginal estrous. Of the different doses of progesterone, 0.5 mg progesterone/day is found to reinstate more or less normal vaginal cycles. None of the doses of progesterone and CPA induced ovulation in cystic ovaries and hence the vaginal cycles thus reinstated are not the reflection of ovarian cycles and the diestrous smear is not an indication of functional CL in these ovaries. The treatment of progesterone and CPA brought about degenerative changes in the antral follicles above stage IV and in cystic type I follicles. It mobilised the growth of type 0 follicles up to the early antral stage of type III, thereby indicating the presence of the negative feedback of progestational steroids on FSH secretion in PVE rats. The minimum change in the activity of carbohydrate metabolising enzymes and the steroid dehydrogenases in the ovaries subsequent to the treatment with especially the higher doses of progesterone, and CPA suggests the absence of any impact on LH secretion, albeit indirect. There was a marked reduction in the steroidogenic potential in the adrenal glands of the CPA treated rats; however, it did not show any positive impact on the structure of the polycystic ovary.

Administration (i.m.) of metopirone (2.5 mg/frog/day for 10 days) to adult male frog, R. cyanophlyctis, resulted in marked degranulation and hypertrophy of B3 cells and a moderate degranulation of B2 cells of the pars distalis. Concomitantly, there was hypertrophy of the interrenal cells and regression of the Leydig cells, however spermatogenesis was not affected. The results suggest a functional correlation between pituitary B cells and the interrenals in R. cyanophlyctis.

Administration of low doses of prostaglandin F2 alpha (PGF2 alpha), i.e. 10 and 100 ng/g b.wt, was ineffective in inducing ovulation and spawning in mature catfish. However, doses of 200 ng/g b.wt of PGF2 alpha elicited partial response, and 500 ng/g b.wt of PGF2 alpha induced profuse ovulation and spawning similar to that induced by administration of human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG).

The ovary of the domestic pigeon, Columba livia, has been assayed histochemically for the localization of delta 5-3 beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (delta 5-3 beta-HSDH), 17 beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (17 beta-HSDA), 11 beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (11 beta-HSDH), glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6P-DH) and NADH-diaphorase activities during different periods of the reproductive cycle. delta 5-3 beta-HSDH, 17 beta-HSDH, 11 beta-HSDH, G6P-DH and NADH-diaphorase activity was found in the theca interna of growing, atretic and postovulatory follicles, the granulosa of ovulatory, atretic and postovulatory follicles, and interstitial gland cells during the pre-incubation and the laying periods. During the incubation and squab feeding periods only delta 5-3 beta-HSDH, G6P-DH and NADH-diaphorase activities were observed in the above mentioned cells. The steroidogenic potential of atretic follicles depends upon the type of atresia a follicle undergoes.

The male reproductive cycle of Channa gachua from fresh water tanks around Dharwad (North 15 degrees 27' latitude, East 75 degrees 01' longitude) is investigated by a) recording the gonosomatic index, every month, over a period 2 consecutive years and b) studying the histological structure of the testis during this period. Based on this study, the fish is suggested to breed twice in a year. The 1st breeding phase coincides with the South-West monsoons and the 2nd with the convectional rains in the month of March. Though C. gachua shows 2 breeding periods, the spermatogenic activity is a continuous process in this fish. The presence of delta 5-3 beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (delta 5-3 beta-HSDH) and Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G-6-PDH) is demonstrated in the interstitial tissue which indicates its steroidogenic potential.

The distribution of delta5 3beta-hydroxüsteroid dehydrogenase (delta5 3beta-HSDH), 17beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (17beta-HSDH), Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G-6-PDH) and NADH-diaphorase enzymes has been histochemically studied in the interrenal gland and the ovary of the stork-billed kingfisher, Pelargopsis capensis (Linn.). In the interrenal gland, the activity for all the enzymes studied, occurred in the interrenal cells. All these enzyme activities occurred in the theca interna of normal growing follicles, atretic follicles and interstitial gland cells of the ovary. A weak activity for all the enzymes occurred in the hypertrophied granulosa cells of the atretic follicles. The significance of these findings is discussed.
The presence of 5-3deltabeta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase, IIbeta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase, 17beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase has been demonstrated histochemically in the adrenal gland of the rain quail Coturnix coromendalica, barn owl Tyto alba, brown crake Amaurornis akool and painted partidge Francholinus pictus. All these enzymes occurred in the inter-renal cells. No activity was observed in the chromaffin cells. It is suggested that the inter-renal cells of these four species of birds are capable of synthesizing both corticosteroids and sex steroids.
