Endoscopic pancreatography in chronic pancreatitis of the tropics.

The ERCP findings in 13 patients with chronic pancreatitis of the tropics are reported. 7 of the patients had pancreatic calculi on plain film of abdomen and 6 had no calcification. The changes observed in the pancreatograms were tortuosity, dilatation, stenosis, obstruction, cyst formation and presence of calculi in the main pancreatic ducts and their finer branches. The calcific variety showed a greater degree of ductal derangement compared to the non-calcific variety. The common bile duct was normal in all the patients. The pancreatographic changes observed are similar to those described in the alcoholic and other varieties of chronic pancreatitis.

Metastatic astrocytoma.

Two women, treated with surgery and radiotherapy for cerebral astrocytoma, developed metastases. In one case a metastasis in a craniotomy scar was probably implanted at the time of surgery; at first this was sensitive to chemotherapy and radiotherapy, but it later recurred and became resistant to treatment, with resistant tumour spreading extensively through the scalp and the cervical lymphatic chain. In the other case tumour disseminated hematogenously to the bone marrow. Both patients died of metastatic disease with primary tumours apparently well controlled. The syndrome of metastatic astrocytoma may be under-diagnosed.

Relationships among three Muslim and one Hindu endogamous groups of Madhya Pradesh. I. Genetic distance analysis.

Genetic distances have been estimated among three Muslim groups, the Sunni, Shia and the Bohra, and a Hindu group, the Brahman, from five districts of the centrally located state of Madhya Pradesh in India. The distances are based on five genetic systems, the ABO, MN and Rh blood groups. PIC taste sensitivity and colour blindness. None of the 6 distances among the 4 groups was statistically significant. However, cluster analysis showed that Sunni and Shia form a very close cluster which is successively joined by Brahman and Bohra, the latter having comparatively large distances from all the other groups.

Relationships among three Muslim and one Hindu endogamous groups of Madhya Pradesh. II. Morpho-behavioural distance analysis.

Morpho-behavioural distances between three endogamous Muslim groups (Sunni, Shia and Bohra) and one Hindu group (Brahman) of Madhya Pradesh, separately for males and females, were estimated. All the differences were statistically significant. The male and female distances were combined into a pooled distance. The Bohra group was found to be distant from all the other groups in both males and females. The relationships between the other three were different in the two sexes-Sunni and Shia forming the closest cluster in males and Sunni and Brahman in females. The Sunni were intermediate between the Shia and the Brahman in both sexes. The morpho-behavioural distances were compared with the genetic distances.
