Radiotherapy in massive angiomatous osteolysis (Gorham-Stout's syndrome).

The cases of two young men with the Gorham-Stout's syndrome of massive angiomatous osteolysis are presented. Attempted surgical removal of the pathological angiomatous tissue proved unsuccessful. Telegammatherapy with each patient receiving total focal dose of 40.0 Gy fractionated over a period of 4 weeks resulted in speedy and complete arrest of osteolysis, and in partial recalcification of the bone tissue destroyed. In one patient the favourable condition has been lasting for 9 years, in the other for 8 months from the end of the course of radiotherapy. The authors discuss the cause of a central fracture of the first patient's left acetabulum which was noted 5 years after the radiotherapy. Proceeding from their experience so far, the authors describe radiotherapy in the Gorham-Stout's syndrome as a method of choice, and give a list of the therapeutical principles.

Perinatal subglottic and hepatic hemangiomas as potential emergencies: effect of radiotherapy.

The authors analyze 5 cases of perinatal hemangiomas in internal localizations respresenting relative or immediate emergencies. Three cases were subglottic proliferating hemangiomas with threatening suffocation, the other two were large hemangiomas of the liver causing conspicuous hepatomegaly. In 3 children there were also hemangiomas of the skin and/or in the oral cavity seen as important signs in the diagnostic reflections on the nature of the urgent clinical pictures. Moreover one child with subglottic hemangioma suffered from hematological disorders characterizing the syndrome Kasabach--Merritt. In all the children transcutaneous radiotherapy was performed (ranging from 12 Gy in two weeks up to an exceptional dose of 25 Gy over 3 months). This was followed by recession of subjective complaints and, eventually, by complete regression of the irradiated angiomatous lesions, both subglottic and hepatic. The disorders of hemocoagulation disappeared also quickly and completely. At present, i. e. after 3 to 21 years, there are no undersirable post-irradiation changes in any of the patients. Nevertheless, in view of possible post-irradiation effects, particularly on the thyroid gland, the patients continue to be regularly followed up at the respective clinical departments.

HLA system and testicular germinative tumours.

In 62 patients with testicular germinative tumours and 301 healthy unrelated subjects, 23 HLA antigens of A and B loci were tested. In the group of 40 seminomas the incidence of HLA-Bw35 antigen and in 22 patients with non-seminomas (embryonal carcinomas, teratocarcinoma and mixed forms) the frequency of HLA-A 10 antigen were significantly higher (27.50 vs. 14.28% in the controls, p greater than 0.025; 36.36 vs. 15.28%, p less than 0.025). After correction by multiplying p by the number of typed antigens there was no statistically significant result any more. The causes of dubious results of the studies about the association between HLA and malignancies are discussed.
