Effects of mutational loss of nucleoside kinases on deoxyadenosine 5'-phosphate/deoxyadenosine substrate cycle in cultured CEM and V79 cells.

The functions of a deoxynucleoside kinase and a deoxynucleotidase can give rise to substrate cycles in which the two enzymes catalyze in opposite directions the irreversible interconversion of a deoxynucleoside 5'-monophosphate (dNMP) and its deoxynucleoside. Earlier evidence showed that pyrimidine dNMP cycles occur in cultured cells and participate in the regulation of the size of dNMP pools there by affecting the transport of deoxyribonucleosides across the cell membrane. Here, we apply an isotope flow method using labeled adenine as precursor of dAMP and DNA to quantify deoxyadenosine excretion as a measure of the catabolic activity of a putative dAMP/deoxyadenosine cycle. A comparison of human CEM lymphoblasts and hamster V79 fibroblasts, including mutant cells lacking kinases for the phosphorylation of deoxyadenosine, shows a much lower deoxyadenosine excretion in CEM cells (0.05% of dATP synthesized by reduction of ADP) as compared with V79 cells (4% of dATP). Mutational loss of deoxycytidine kinase increases these values to 0.3% in CEM cells and to 10% in V79 cells. This strongly suggests the presence of a dAMP/deoxyadenosine cycle in both CEM and V79 cells. Additional loss of adenosine kinase only marginally affects deoxyadenosine excretion in CEM cells. The small excretion of deoxyadenosine (also in the absence of both kinases) demonstrates that in CEM cells the in situ activity of the deoxynucleotidase affecting the dAMP/deoxyadenosine substrate cycle is very low and that the cycle has mainly an anabolic function there.

Continuous electrocardiographic monitoring for more than one hour does not improve the prognostic value of ventricular arrhythmias in survivors of first acute myocardial infarction.

This study was designed to compare the prognostic value of predischarge ambulatory electrocardiographic monitoring for 1, 6 and 24 hours in 188 patients surviving a first acute myocardial infarction. Ventricular premature complexes (VPCs) were considered as a mean hourly rate or classified using Lown and Moss grading systems. During the 1-year follow-up 20 cardiac deaths occurred. For all 3 monitoring times, a higher number of VPCs/hour and a higher Moss grade were associated with mortality, whereas a Lown grading system gave prognostic information only for the first hour of recording. Monitoring time did not influence specificity or sensitivity in predicting mortality; > or = 3 VPCs/hour showed a higher sensitivity than > or = 10 VPCs/hour (p < 0.05) with a comparable specificity. After 1-hour data entered the model, neither the 6- or the 24-hour data entry improved the overall likelihood ratio statistic, regardless of what VPC grading system was used. These results demonstrate that continuous electrocardiographic recordings of > 1 hour are unnecessary when they are to be used for detecting ventricular arrhythmia as a predictor of mortality in patients surviving a first acute myocardial infarction.

Influence of reversible segmental left ventricular dysfunction on heart period variability in patients with one-vessel coronary artery disease.

OBJECTIVES: This study evaluated the relation between reversible segmental left ventricular dysfunction and frequency domain measures of heart period variability in patients with coronary artery disease. BACKGROUND: Heart period variability is frequently reduced in patients with coronary artery disease. However, the mechanisms of this reduction are still unclear. METHODS: Echocardiographic left ventricular wall motion and frequency domain measures of heart period variability were evaluated in 32 patients with one-vessel coronary artery disease before and 16 to 24 days after successful percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty. Of these, 12 patients (Group A) had normal and 20 patients (Group B) had abnormal regional wall motion. A control group of 15 healthy subjects (Group C) underwent 24-h Holter recording twice at 2-week intervals to check for spontaneous variations. RESULTS: At baseline, low and high frequency power were lower in Group B than in Groups A and C, whereas no difference was detectable in ultra low and very low frequency and total power. After coronary angioplasty, regional wall motion and frequency domain measures of heart period variability were unchanged in Group A. In Group B the mean (+/- SD) summed segment score improved from 17.1 +/- 3.6 to 12.8 +/- 2.0 (p < 0.01), and mean low and high frequency power (logarithmic units) increased from 6.14 +/- 0.23 to 6.35 +/- 0.34 (p < 0.01) and from 5.43 +/- 0.32 to 5.68 +/- 0.52 (p < 0.01), respectively. Furthermore, low and high frequency power, lower at baseline in Group B than in the other two groups, were comparable in the three groups after coronary angioplasty. CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrates that segmental left ventricular dysfunction is involved in determining sympathovagal imbalance in patients with one-vessel coronary artery disease; the reversal of left ventricular dysfunction by successful coronary angioplasty improves the heart period power spectrum. Thus, alterations in cardiac geometry influence the discharge of afferent sympathetic mechanoreceptors, contributing to the derangement in autonomic control of heart rate.

Left ventricular remodelling in the year after myocardial infarction: an echocardiographic, haemodynamic, and radionuclide angiographic study.

BACKGROUND: The factors that influence infarct expansion early after myocardial infarction have been identified; however, there is less information about late-phase left ventricular enlargement. This study was designed to identify the clinical, haemodynamic, echocardiographic, and radionuclide angiographic criteria that predict the progress of left ventricular dilation after discharge for a first-anterior myocardial infarction. METHODS: Sixty-seven patients with first Q-wave acute anterior myocardial infarction not treated with thrombolytic agents underwent baseline echocardiographic, haemodynamic, and radionuclide angiographic evaluation 4-7 days after the onset of symptoms. The echocardiographic and radionuclide evaluations were repeated after 1 year in the 55 patients who completed the follow-up. By multivariate stepwise linear regression analysis, left ventricular end-diastolic volume after 1 year and change from baseline were modelled as a function of baseline left ventricular end-diastolic volume and other potential predictors. RESULTS: A model including left ventricular end-diastolic pressure, global wall motion score, baseline left ventricular end-diastolic volume, and a Thrombolysis in Myocardial Infarction (TIMI) score of 0-1 was able to predict 84% of the left ventricular end-diastolic volume at the follow-up; a TIMI score of 0-1, the transverse end-diastolic diameter, global wall motion score, and the number of coronary vessels with 70% stenosis accounted for 81% of the variation in left ventricular end-diastolic volume from baseline, while the transverse end-diastolic diameter was inversely related to this parameter. CONCLUSIONS: The results of this study demonstrate that after an anterior myocardial infarction, the patency of the infarct-related artery is the major determinant of late left ventricular dilation, while left ventricular end-diastolic pressure influences early left ventricular dilation and baseline end-diastolic volume. Therefore, to improve left ventricular remodelling, it appears necessary to increase the patency of the infarct-related artery and improve the diastolic loading of the left ventricle at an early stage in the infarction. The inverse relationship between baseline left ventricular transverse diameter and the change in left ventricular volume after discharge indicates that the higher the baseline left ventricular volume, the less it changed during the follow-up. The global wall motion score appears to be a non-invasive parameter that is useful for identifying patients with a high risk of progressive left ventricular dilation.

Effects of converting enzyme inhibition on heart period variability in patients with acute myocardial infarction.

BACKGROUND: Heart period variability provides useful prognostic information on autonomic cardiac control, and a strong association has been demonstrated after myocardial infarction (MI) between cardiac mortality, sudden death, and reduced total power, ultralow-frequency (ULF) power, and very-low-frequency (VLF) power. Converting enzyme inhibitors are widely used in MI patients, but their influence on heart period variability remains to be defined. METHODS AND RESULTS: Time- and frequency-domain measures of heart period variability were calculated from 24-hour Holter monitoring in 40 patients with a first uncomplicated MI. After baseline examination between 48 and 72 hours after symptom onset, patients were randomly assigned to placebo or captopril administration, and on the third day, 24-hour Holter monitoring was repeated. No changes in time and frequency domain were detectable after placebo. After captopril, the SD of all normal RR (NN) intervals (SDNN) increased from 90 +/- 29 to 105 +/- 30 milliseconds (P < .01); the SD of the average NN intervals for all 5-minute segments (SDANN index) and the mean of the SDs of all NN intervals for all 5-minute segments (SDNN index) also increased from 74 +/- 24 to 90 +/- 26 milliseconds (P < .01) and from 45 +/- 17 to 49 +/- 15 milliseconds (P < .05), respectively. The root mean square successive difference (r-MSSD) and the percent of differences between adjacent NN intervals > 50 milliseconds (pNN50) remained unchanged. In regard to frequency-domain measures, after captopril, total power (ln unit) increased from 8.28 +/- 0.42 to 8.47 +/- 0.30 (P < .01); considering the frequency bands, a significant increase was observed in ULF (P < .01), VLF (P < .05), and low-frequency (LF) power (P < .05), whereas high-frequency (HF) power remained unchanged. CONCLUSIONS: This study supports the hypothesis that the renin-angiotensin system modulates the amplitude of ULF and VLF power. Furthermore, it demonstrates that in MI patients, converting enzyme inhibition favorably modifies measures of heart period variability strongly associated with a poor prognosis.

[The incremental prognostic value of the scintigraphic indices of myocardial hypoperfusion in patients with a maximal stress test].

The additional prognostic value of thallium imaging in patients who are capable of performing a maximal, symptom-limited electrocardiographic stress test is still uncertain. Thus, we evaluated the incremental prognostic value of exercise thallium-201 indexes of myocardial hypoperfusion in 296 patients with suspected or known coronary artery disease who performed a maximal ECG stress test. At 2 year follow-up 20 hard events (16 cardiac deaths and 4 non fatal myocardial infarctions) and 44 soft events (myocardial revascularization procedures) occurred. Considering total events, thallium imaging provided significant additional prognostic information to clinical and exercise stress test data in all patients (p < 0.001) and in patients with previous myocardial infarction (p < 0.001); in patients without previous infarction, whichever the end-point considered, thallium imaging did not add incremental prognostic value. When only hard events were considered, thallium variables added further information only in patients with previous myocardial infarction (p < 0.05). The results of this study demonstrate that scintigraphic indexes of myocardial hypoperfusion obtained by qualitative planar thallium imaging give incremental prognostic information in patients with previous myocardial infarction but not in the subset of patients without previous infarction.

[Immediate post-operative enteral nutrition].

Patients with cancer of the upper digestive tract may present with malnutrition, which may cause immunodepression and an increased rate of postoperative complications. In this study we describe the rationale and the feasibility of immediate postoperative enteral nutrition (NEPI) and evaluate its effectiveness for the nutritional support of patients undergoing surgery of the upper digestive tract. We studied 46 patients undergoing the following procedures: total gastrectomy (n = 22); oesophageal resection (n = 12); duodenocephalopancreasectomy (n = 12). NEPI was started on postoperative day 0 with a polymeric diet (calories: 53% as CHO, 22% as proteins, 25% as lipids) aiming at a calorie intake of 25 Kcal/Kg/day by postoperative day 4. It was possible to administer 24 Kcal/kg/day with the enteral diet from the 4th to the 10th postoperative day. Oral intake was resumed on average on postoperative day 13, and the mean hospital stay was 27 +/- 17 days. Tolerance of NEPI was good in most patients: only 5 patients (11%) interrupted the enteral nutrition. The mean postoperative weight loss was 3.7%. The rate of septic complications was 27%; mortality was nil. The surgical procedures caused a transient and reversible acute-phase decrease of nutritional and immunological parameters in the early postoperative period. However the NEPI preserved the nutritional status postoperatively as shown by the lack of significant changes in the nutritional indices at 10-14 days after surgery, as compared with baseline. In summary, we documented that NEPI can be started from postoperative day 0 with good intestinal tolerance, allowing adequate nutritional support, after extensive surgical procedures on the upper digestive tract.

Flavodoxin is required for the activation of the anaerobic ribonucleotide reductase.

The inactive anaerobic ribonucleotide reductase from Escherichia coli is transformed by a multienzyme system and S-adenosylmethionine + NADPH into a radical protein that is enzymatically active. One of the activating enzyme components was earlier shown to be ferredoxin (flavodoxin):NADP+ reductase. Here we present evidence that flavodoxin, but not ferredoxin, also is a component of the system. Light reduced deazaflavin can substitute for the flavodoxin system. An additional unidentified low-molecular weight component further stimulates the reaction.

Effects of acetylstrophanthidin on baroreflex sensitivity in patients with acute myocardial infarction.

We evaluated the effects of acetylstrophanthidin on baroreflex sensitivity in patients soon after an acute myocardial infarction. Baroreflex control of heart rate is frequently depressed after acute myocardial infarction and few data are available as to the effects of pharmacological intervention on this parameter. The reflex chronotropic response to arterial baroreceptor stimulation was assessed in 29 patients with uncomplicated acute myocardial infarction in control conditions (72-96 h after symptom onset) and 30 min after acetylstrophanthidin administration. To check for spontaneous baroreflex sensitivity variations, 24 patients with the same characteristics were evaluated at the same time intervals before and after a 10-cc bolus of saline placebo. Baroreflex sensitivity was assessed by calculating the regression line relating phenylephrine-induced increases in systolic blood pressure to the attendant changes in RR intervals. Mean baseline baroreflex sensitivity value for the whole study population was 7.4 +/- 4.5 ms/mmHg and was unchanged, 7.0 +/- 4.5 ms/mmHg, after acetylstrophanthidin (P = NS). Mean baroreflex sensitivity values were also comparable dividing patients according to the site of infarction both before and after acetylstrophanthidin. Despite the lack of difference in mean baroreflex sensitivity values between the two studies, at a post hoc analysis an inverse relation was found in the total study population between baseline baroreflex sensitivity values and their changes after acetylstrophanthidin (r = -0.62; P < 0.005). The inverse relation was also evident separately in anterior (r = -0.57; P < 0.05) and in inferior (r = -0.70; P < 0.005) myocardial infarction patients.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Effects of sustained training on left ventricular structure and function in top level rowers.

The effects of vigorous training on left ventricular structure and function were evaluated in 15 top level rowers using electrocardiography, Doppler echocardiography and radionuclide angiography. All subjects were studied after 1 month of deconditioning and again after 5 months of vigorous training. After training there was an increase in the ventricular hypertrophy voltage criteria proposed by Sokolow-Lyon and by Friedman but not in that proposed by Casale; T wave amplitude in leads V5 and V6 increased in nine subjects, was unchanged in one and decreased in five; the mean values were also unchanged. Training induced a significant increase in left ventricular end-diastolic and end-systolic diameter and in left ventricular mass index, while peak systolic stress and mean wall stress index decreased. No change was detected after training in the mean values of Doppler echocardiographic and radionuclide angiographic data; nevertheless a significant relationship was found between changes in T wave height in V5 or V6 and in peak filling rate, and between changes in T wave height and ejection fraction. Our study confirms that the effect of vigorous training on left ventricular mass and dimensions does not include changes in mean values of systolic and diastolic function. The relationship between change in T wave amplitude and in peak filling rate values suggests that some metabolic or neurohumoral derangement occurs in the subset of athletes with T wave flattening, that is responsible for the slight reduction in peak filling rate and ejection fraction.

Incremental prognostic value of thallium imaging and coronary angiography in patients with a symptom-limited ECG stress test.

BACKGROUND: This study evaluates the incremental prognostic value of qualitative thallium-201 imaging and coronary angiography in patients with suspected or known coronary artery disease. METHODS: Within 1 month, 150 patients underwent diagnostic symptom-limited ECG stress test, thallium imaging, and coronary angiography. The incremental power of sequentially performed tests was evaluated by the overall likelihood ratio statistic. RESULTS: At 3-year follow-up, 16 patients had died from a cardiac cause, 12 had suffered a nonfatal myocardial infarction, and 34 had undergone revascularization procedures more than 60 days after testing. Considering hard events, thallium imaging did not improve the prognostic information provided by clinical exercise stress test data, while coronary angiography increased the predictive power of the combined, exercise stress test, and scintigraphic data (P < 0.001). Moreover, when thallium results were added to clinical, exercise, and coronary angiographic data, the predictive power was unchanged. When the analysis was repeated including the occurrence of late revascularization procedures, each test showed additional prognostic information to that obtained by the other combined tests (P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrates that in patients with a symptom-limited ECG stress test, coronary angiography adds prognostic information to combined clinical, exercise ECG, and thallium imaging data. The incremental prognostic value of qualitative thallium imaging is demonstrable only when late revascularization procedures are included as events.

Escherichia coli ferredoxin NADP+ reductase: activation of E. coli anaerobic ribonucleotide reduction, cloning of the gene (fpr), and overexpression of the protein.

A specific ribonucleoside triphosphate reductase is induced in anaerobic Escherichia coli. This enzyme, as isolated, lacks activity in the test tube and can be activated anaerobically with S-adenosylmethionine, NADPH, and two previously uncharacterized E. coli fractions. The gene for one of these, previously named dA1, was cloned and sequenced. We found an open reading frame coding for a polypeptide of 248 amino acid residues, with a molecular weight of 27,645 and with an N-terminal segment identical to that determined by direct Edman degradation. In a Kohara library, the gene hybridized between positions 3590 and 3600 on the physical map of E. coli. The deduced amino acid sequence shows a high extent of sequence identity with that of various ferredoxin (flavodoxin) NADP+ reductases. We therefore conclude that dA1 is identical with E. coli ferredoxin (flavodoxin) NADP+ reductase. Biochemical evidence from a bacterial strain, now constructed and overproducing dA1 activity up to 100-fold, strongly supports this conclusion. The sequence of the gene shows an apparent overlap with the reported sequence of mvrA, previously suggested to be involved in the protection against superoxide (M. Morimyo, J. Bacteriol. 170:2136-2142, 1988). We suggest that a frameshift introduced during isolation or sequencing of mvrA caused an error in the determination of its sequence.

Effects of captopril treatment on left ventricular remodeling and function after anterior myocardial infarction: comparison with digitalis.

The effects of captopril and digoxin treatment on left ventricular remodeling and function after anterior myocardial infarction were evaluated in a randomized unblinded trial. Fifty-two patients with a first transmural anterior myocardial infarction and a radionuclide left ventricular ejection fraction less than 40% were randomly assigned to treatment with captopril (Group A) or digoxin (Group B). The two groups had similar baseline hemodynamic, coronary angiographic, echocardiographic and radionuclide angiographic variables. Among the 40 patients (20 in each group) who were followed up for 1 year, echocardiographic end-diastolic and end-systolic volumes were unmodified in Group A and global wall motion index was improved (p less than 0.01); in Group B, end-diastolic and end-systolic volumes increased (p less than 0.001 for both) and global wall motion index was unchanged. Rest radionuclide ejection fraction increased significantly in both groups (p less than 0.001, Group A; p less than 0.005, Group B). A comparison of the changes in the considered variables between the two groups after 1 year of treatment showed a difference in end-diastolic (p less than 0.005) end-systolic volumes (p less than 0.001) and global wall motion index (p less than 0.005) without differences in radionuclide ejection fraction, which improved to a similar degree in both groups. The results of this study suggest that captopril therapy, started 7 to 10 days after symptom onset in patients with anterior myocardial infarction and an ejection fraction less than 40%, improves both left ventricular remodeling and function and prevents left ventricular enlargement and in these patients performs better than digitalis.

Characterization and prognostic significance of silent myocardial ischemia on predischarge electrocardiographic monitoring in unselected patients with myocardial infarction.

Characteristics and prognostic significance of ischemic ST changes at predischarge Holter monitoring were evaluated in 270 consecutive postinfarction patients. The 64 patients with ST changes had a greater incidence of non-Q-wave myocardial infarction (p less than 0.01) and ventricular premature contractions (p less than 0.01); they were more frequently in Moss class greater than 2 (p less than 0.01) and they had a lower wall motion score (p less than 0.05). At 2-year follow-up, patients with ST changes had a higher incidence of cardiac death and reinfarction. At multivariate analysis, Killip class (p less than 0.01) and ST changes (p less than 0.05) were the most predictive variables; when multivariate analysis was repeated including an additional variable--the inability to perform a stress test--Killip class was the most significant variable (p less than 0.01), and the presence of ST changes showed only borderline statistical significance (p less than 0.1). In the subset of patients who did not perform the stress test, ST change was the most important variable (p less than 0.01), followed by Killip class (p less than 0.05). Thus, after myocardial infarction, ST changes during Holter monitoring are associated with a poor prognosis and appear useful for stratifying patients who do not perform exercise stress tests.

Metabolic consequences of adenine-phosphoribosyl transferase deficiency in V79 hamster fibroblasts.

Two APRT- clones (V79-E3 and V79-E1A) were isolated from V79 hamster fibroblasts treated with ethyl methanesulfonate. Selection involved sequential exposure of the mutagenized cells to the adenine analogues 8-azaadenine and 2,6-diaminopurine. To examine the influence of APRT deficiency on cell metabolism we determined the size and turnover of adenine ribonucleotide pools, the deoxyribonucleoside triphosphate pools, the rate of DNA synthesis, and the length of the cell cycle. Clone V79-E3 was hemizygous for aprt and carried a new chromosome, 3p-. Clone V79-E1A was quasi-tetraploid with a cell volume more than twice that of the WT cells. When the difference in size was taken into account, both clones behaved similarly. While WT V79 cells released no adenine into the medium, they excreted adenine at a rate of 6 pmol/min. This did not affect the size of the ATP pool. The main change in the deoxynucleotide pools was a marked decrease of the concentration of dCTP. The rate of DNA synthesis was the same in WT cells and in the diploid V79-E3 clone. APRT is known to recycle adenine produced during polyamine synthesis, but the enzyme apparently contributes little to the maintenance of adenine ribonucleotide pools of V79 fibroblasts.

Deoxynucleotide pools and DNA synthesis in resting and PHA-stimulated human lymphocytes treated with mutagens.

In resting and PHA-stimulated PBL treated with uv light or MMS we measured the sizes of the dTTP and dATP pools and the variation of ATP content taken as an indicator of cytotoxicity. The effects on DNA synthesis were examined by measuring DNA repair (unscheduled DNA synthesis) in resting PBL and the inhibition of DNA replication in stimulated PBL. While both treatments affected DNA synthesis, only MMS perturbed dNTP pools and decreased the intracellular concentration of ATP. All the effects were more evident in cycling than in resting lymphocytes.

Dynamics of the dATP pool in cultured mammalian cells.

Conditions for labeling the dATP pool of V79 and 3T3 cells from [3H]deoxyadenosine (salvage) or [3H]adenine (via ribonucleotide reduction) were established. With deoxyadenosine the specific radioactivity of dATP reached a constant value after 60 min. In resting 3T3 cells this value was 30 times higher than in S-phase cells. Turnover of dATP and absolute rates of DNA synthesis and excretion of breakdown products of dATP were determined from the accumulation of isotope in various compartments and the specific activity of dATP. In S-phase cells the dATP pool had a half-life of 4 min, identical to that of dTTP determined earlier. Deoxyadenosine was the major breakdown product of dATP in the presence of an inhibitor of adenosine deaminase. The rate of deoxyadenosine excretion of V79 cells amounted to 4% of the rate of dATP incorporation into DNA. Inhibition of DNA replication increased deoxyadenosine excretion 5- to 10-fold, demonstrating a continued de novo synthesis of dATP, albeit at a slightly reduced rate. Our results fit a model involving a substrate cycle between dAMP and deoxyadenosine regulating the dATP pool, similar to the model of substrate cycles involved in the regulation of pyrimidine deoxyribonucleotide pools developed earlier.

Effects of converting enzyme inhibition on baroreflex sensitivity in patients with myocardial infarction.

BACKGROUND: Baroreflex sensitivity provides useful prognostic information in patients after acute myocardial infarction. However, no data are available about the effects of converting enzyme inhibition on this variable. OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to evaluate the effects of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibition on baroreflex sensitivity in patients after uncomplicated myocardial infarction. METHODS: Twenty-five patients after uncomplicated myocardial infarction underwent baroreflex sensitivity evaluation 72 to 96 h after symptom onset and after 4 days of captopril therapy. Twenty additional patients with the same characteristics were evaluated at the same time intervals before and after placebo administration to identify spontaneous baroreflex sensitivity variations. Baroreflex sensitivity was assessed by calculating the regression line relating phenylephrine-induced increases in systolic blood pressure to the attendant changes in the RR interval. RESULTS: The mean baroreflex sensitivity value increased after captopril administration from 6.5 +/- 4.2 to 11.8 +/- 6.1 ms/mm Hg (p less than 0.01) and in individual analyses increased by greater than 2 ms/mm Hg in 68% of patients. Mean plasma renin activity increased after captopril from 3.7 +/- 2.4 to 8.5 +/- 4.9 ng/ml per h (p less than 0.005). No difference was detectable in baroreflex sensitivity and plasma renin activity values according to the site of necrosis. In the control group, baroreflex sensitivity and plasma renin activity remained unchanged between the two studies. CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrates that in patients with uncomplicated myocardial infarction, captopril significantly improves the chronotropic response to baroreceptor stimulation.
