Lambda and lambda production in central Pb-Pb collisions at 40, 80, and 158A GeV.

Production of Lambda and Antilambda hyperons was measured in central Pb-Pb collisions at 40, 80, and 158A GeV beam energy on a fixed target. Transverse mass spectra and rapidity distributions are given for all three energies. The Lambda/pi ratio at midrapidity and in full phase space shows a pronounced maximum between the highest BNL Alternating Gradient Synchrotron and 40A GeV CERN Super Proton Synchrotron energies, whereas the Lambda/pi ratio exhibits a monotonic increase.

Evidence for an exotic S= -2, Q= -2 baryon resonance in proton-proton collisions at the CERN SPS.

Results of resonance searches in the Xi(-)pi(-), Xi(-)pi(+), Xi;(+)pi(-), and Xi;(+)pi(+) invariant mass spectra in proton-proton collisions at sqrt[s]=17.2 GeV are presented. Evidence is shown for the existence of a narrow Xi(-)pi(-) baryon resonance with mass of 1.862+/-0.002 GeV/c(2) and width below the detector resolution of about 0.018 GeV/c(2). The significance is estimated to be above 4.2sigma. This state is a candidate for the hypothetical exotic Xi(--)(3/2) baryon with S=-2, I=3 / 2, and a quark content of (dsdsū). At the same mass, a peak is observed in the Xi(-)pi(+) spectrum which is a candidate for the Xi(0)(3/2) member of this isospin quartet with a quark content of (dsus[-]d). The corresponding antibaryon spectra also show enhancements at the same invariant mass.

Surveys on mammography frequency in Geneva.

Two surveys were conducted in Geneva, in 1991 and 1995, to assess the coverage of mammography before the introduction of a breast cancer screening programme. Women who attended for mammographies did so at their own request, or were referred by doctors (more by gynaecologists than general practitioners). In 1995, the total female population was around 200,000, of which the target population for screening (age group 50 to 69) was 46,000 persons. The total number of mammographies observed increased by 23%, with a higher increase for "routine" mammographies (+35%). However, these figures hide certain trends, with a high proportion of educated women performing regular breast investigations. The two year coverage rate for mammography among the 50 to 69 age group is estimated at 38%, which means that about 20,000 women within this target population in Geneva still escape screening.

Critical care in Europe.

Intensive care medicine developed in Europe following the polio epidemic in Denmark in 1952 and is now a specialty in its own right. Across Europe differences exist between countries regarding unit size, policy, staffing, and patient demographics. There is in particular a marked north/south divide, with smaller units dealing with sicker patients in the south than the north. The United Kingdom appears to be similar to the countries of Southern Europe. Guidelines for training and structure are being developed in an attempt to create more uniformity and improve communication between units.

Magnetic resonance imaging in the diagnosis of breast disease: use of transverse relaxation times.

The ability of magnetic resonance imaging (MR) to demonstrate breast carcinoma depends upon significantly different relaxation times in benign and malignant tissues. The authors conducted an in vitro study of transverse relaxation times (T2) of 393 breast tissue samples in order to establish a range of values for normal tissue, benign lesions, and carcinoma. All T2 values were multiexponential. Benign lesions were readily distinguished from both invasive and noninvasive carcinoma in samples containing fat or a mixture of fat and fibrous tissue; however, in purely fibrous samples there was some overlap of T2 values in benign and malignant tissues. Although the data acquisition and analysis requirements involved in this in vitro study exceed the capabilities of present whole-body MR imagers, the added understanding gained through efforts of this type may aid both interpretation of current images and future developments.

Possibilities of persistence in new biotopes of ticks imported by birds.

Survival and development of 6 tick species (Hyalomma anatolicum, Rhipicephalus sanguineus, Haemaphysalis punctata, Dermacentor marginatus, D. reticulatus and Ixodes ricinus) were studied in 3 groups differing in the range of distribution with respect to the place of importation, as a model for the knowledge of their possible inclusion in the new local biocenosis during transportation by natural hosts.
