[The wives of alcoholics: experience in the study of psychopathology].

The authors examined clinically 215 wives of alcoholics or divorced women who had been previously married to alcoholics. None of the women abused alcohol. Only 12 of them were officially registered as psychiatrist's patients. Borderline psychopathological conditions were diagnosed in 174 women who had long been married to alcoholic husbands or lived with them in one apartment. Of them, psychopathy, neurotic personality, neurosis, reactive depressions were identified in 27%, 24.7%, 23%, 15%, respectively. 41 divorced women living apart from former alcoholic husbands had no psychopathology at the moment of the study. Borderline neurotic disorders in alcoholic husbands' wives should be considered in familial analysis made for subjects seeking genetic advice.

Adjustment Disorders

[The husbands of alcoholic women: experience in studying the psychopathology].

The familial and personal histories and present status of 41 married couples with the family pattern wherein the wife was alcoholic and the husband was non-alcoholic were clinically studied. The purpose was to study the incidence and nature of psychopathological disorders in males in this marriage. It was found that 8 males who were divorced and had been married to an alcoholic female showed no mental disorders at the moment of the study. The remaining 33 husbands living with their alcoholic wife had borderline mental disorders. The diagnostic assessment of the detected disorders was the following in order of decreasing: neuroses, psychopathies, neurotic development of a personality. The high incidence rates of borderline psychopathological disorders in the husbands of alcoholic females suggest that aid should be rendered to the whole family rather than an alcoholic alone.

A genetic study of alcoholism in the Moscow population: preliminary findings.

This article reports the preliminary results of a family study of alcoholism in the Moscow population. A comparison of male and female alcoholic inpatients revealed differences between them in the patterns of alcoholism development and in the frequencies of the disorder among male and female probands' parents and siblings. Those differences, particularly those observed in the fathers of the female and male probands, may suggest that the liability and genetic predisposition to alcoholism in female alcoholics, on the average, are higher than those in male alcoholics. There were also differences between male and female probands in the frequencies of the types of drinking behavior (including alcoholism) we used to characterize individual phenotypes as to the liability to alcoholism in the probands' parents and spouses, indicating that the higher the liability and/or genetic predisposition to alcoholism the higher the probability of the proband's marriage to an individual with a higher liability to the disorder. The data on the comparison of the probands' children with their parents affectedness imply the possibility of a relationship between the genetic predisposition to alcoholism and the risk for mental and somatic disturbances in offspring of alcoholics.

[Alcoholism and heredity: biological basis of the predisposition to alcoholism].

Authors critically review current data about biochemical-physiological factors mediating genetic predisposition to alcoholism. Results of genetic investigation of the ethanol and acetaldehyde metabolism and the facts about enzyme polymorphism of systems of the ethanol biotransformation and genetic polymorphism of particular enzymes are summarized. Data about possible determinants of nervous system sensitivity to ethanol action are considered. The investigation of genetic basis of phenomena imminent to alcoholism by use of laboratory animals is discussed.

Alcoholism

[Relationship between the clinical and electroencephalographic features of similarities between schizophrenic twins and the patient's sex].

Clinical and electroencephalographic peculiarities in monozygotic (15 pairs) and dizygotic (28 pairs) twins suffering from schizophrenia were studied. In addition to the traditional comparison of the mono- and dizygotic twins as regards the clinical and encephalographic similarities and differences in each pair of them, peculiarities of male and female pairs of the twins were also compared (in each group). A tendency to a greater variability of the characteristics examined was revealed among the female twins.

Diseases in Twins

[Interpair differences in the characteristics of the ontogeny, premorbid personality and severity of schizophrenia in twins].

In each of the studied 124 pairs, a twin A was distinguished (the patient with manifest symptoms in the discordant pairs, or more seriously affected twin in concordant pairs) and twin B--its partner. It was demonstrated that the order of birth, differences in the weight at birth, periodization of development do not correlate with the differences in the clinical expression of schizophrenia. Such unfavourable factors as asphyxia, complications during delivery, severe somatic illnesses had a certain tendency to accumulate in twin A. The most distinct correlation was found between the traits of a premorbid personality and the eventual intrapair differences in the severeity of schizophrenia. Twin A in the majority of the cases was more excitable in childhood, had more fears, slept worse, and had a poor appetite. The twin A by its premorbid traits was generally characterized by prevalent asthenic features, withdrawal signs and a more dysharmonic type of personality.

Asphyxia Neonatorum

[Monozygotic and dizygotic twins discordant with regard to manifest schizophrenia].

The author describes psychotic conditions of co-twins who were not seen by a psychiatrist before, in 12 MZ and 62DZ pairs, where the probands suffered from manifest schizophrenia. Among MZ, one half of the examined patients was classified as "mildly expressed schizophrenia" and the other as schizoid personality abnormalities. The probands of MZ pairs displayed the prevalence of slow progressive variants of schizophrenia within the framework of both continuous and attack-like forms. DZ co-twins of schizophrenic probands according to the psychotic state formed a range of transitions from mildly expressed schizophrenia through personality abnormalities to accentuated personalities and norm.

Adolescent

[Monozygotic and dizygotic twins concordant with regard to schizophrenia].

The paper deals with a clinical study of schizophrenia in 30 pairs of concordant twins among which 10 were monozygotic, 5 pairs of a doubtful zygoticy and 16 dizygotic. Concordance to manifest schizophrenia was found in 62.5% of monozygotic twins and 25.5% in dizygotic. Both in monozygotic and in dizygotic pairs a constant coinciding sign, except the nozological belonging, was only the form of development in schizophrenia. The level of postive and negative disorders, the frequency of attacks and duration of remissions differes in monozygotic pairs insignificantly, in dizygotic-somewhat more. However, even in dizygotic pairs the similarities prevail over differences. It was possible to distinguish correlations between the traits of premorbid personality and the severity of the subsequent disease.
