Critical point in complex plasmas.

The occurrence of liquid-vapor phase transition and the possible existence of a critical point in complex plasmas--systems that consist of charged micrograins in a neutralizing plasma background--is investigated theoretically. An analysis based on the consideration of the intergrain interaction potential suggests that under certain conditions systems near and at the critical point should be observable. Measurements under microgravity conditions would appear to be required. The analysis aims at determining the plasma parameter regime most suitable for planned experimental investigations.

Crystallization in two-component Coulomb systems.

The analysis of Coulomb crystallization is extended from one-component to two-component plasmas. Critical parameters for the existence of Coulomb crystals are derived for both classical and quantum crystals. In the latter case, a critical mass ratio of the two charged components is found, which is of the order of 80. Thus, holes in semiconductors with sufficiently flat valence bands are predicted to spontaneously order into a regular lattice. Such hole crystals are intimately related to ion Coulomb crystals in white dwarf and neutron stars as well as to ion crystals produced in the laboratory. A unified phase diagram of two-component Coulomb crystals is presented and is verified by first-principles computer simulations.

Particle charge in the bulk of gas discharges.

An experimental determination of particle charge in a bulk dc discharge plasma covering a wide range of neutral gas pressures, was recently reported [S. Ratynskaia, Phys. Rev. Lett. 93, 085001 (2004)]. The charges obtained were several times smaller than the predictions of collisionless orbital motion limited theory. This discrepancy was attributed to the effect of ion-neutral collisions. In the present paper a more detailed description of this experiment is provided and additional experimental results obtained with particles of different sizes are reported. The measurements are compared with molecular dynamics simulations of particle charging for conditions similar to those of the experiment, with other available experimental data on particle charge in the bulk of gas discharges, and with a simple analytical model accounting for ion-neutral collisions. All the considered evidence indicates that ion-neutral collisions represent a very important factor, which significantly affects (reduces) the particle charge under typical discharge conditions.

Proposal for the study of thermophysical properties of high-energy-density matter using current and future heavy-ion accelerator facilities at GSI Darmstadt.

The subject of high-energy-density (HED) states in matter is of considerable importance to numerous branches of basic as well as applied physics. Intense heavy-ion beams are an excellent tool to create large samples of HED matter in the laboratory with fairly uniform physical conditions. Gesellschaft für Schwerionenforschung, Darmstadt, is a unique worldwide laboratory that has a heavy-ion synchrotron, SIS18, that delivers intense beams of energetic heavy ions. Construction of a much more powerful synchrotron, SIS100, at the future international facility for antiprotons and ion research (FAIR) at Darmstadt will lead to an increase in beam intensity by 3 orders of magnitude compared to what is currently available. The purpose of this Letter is to investigate with the help of two-dimensional numerical simulations, the potential of the FAIR to carry out research in the field of HED states in matter.

Force field inside the void in complex plasmas under microgravity conditions.

Observations of complex plasmas under microgravity conditions onboard the International Space Station performed with the Plasma-Kristall experiment-Nefedov facility are reported. A weak instability of the boundary between the central void (region free of microparticles) and the microparticle cloud is observed at low gas pressures. The instability leads to periodic injections of a relatively small number of particles into the void region (by analogy this effect is called the "trampoline effect"). The trajectories of injected particles are analyzed providing information on the force field inside the void. The experimental results are compared with theory which assumes that the most important forces inside the void are the electric and the ion drag forces. Good agreement is found clearly indicating that under conditions investigated the void formation is caused by the ion drag force.

The CERN Large Hadron Collider as a tool to study high-energy density matter.

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN will generate two extremely powerful 7 TeV proton beams. Each beam will consist of 2808 bunches with an intensity per bunch of 1.15x10(11) protons so that the total number of protons in one beam will be about 3x10(14) and the total energy will be 362 MJ. Each bunch will have a duration of 0.5 ns and two successive bunches will be separated by 25 ns, while the power distribution in the radial direction will be Gaussian with a standard deviation, sigma=0.2 mm. The total duration of the beam will be about 89 mus. Using a 2D hydrodynamic code, we have carried out numerical simulations of the thermodynamic and hydrodynamic response of a solid copper target that is irradiated with one of the LHC beams. These calculations show that only the first few hundred proton bunches will deposit a high specific energy of 400 kJ/g that will induce exotic states of high energy density in matter.

Shock wave formation in a dc glow discharge dusty plasma.

A jump of dust density propagating through the dusty plasma structure has been observed. To excite the disturbance an impulse of axial magnetic field to the dusty plasma in a dc glow discharge striation has been applied. This impulse resulted in the dynamical stretching of the dusty plasma structure. During the reconstruction of the structure a ramp-shaped perturbation of dust density appeared. The perturbation was steepening and formed into a dust-acoustic shock. The anomalously high shock compression is observed.

Monte Carlo results for the hydrogen Hugoniot.

We propose a theoretical Hugoniot relation obtained by combining results for the equation of state from the direct path integral Monte Carlo technique (DPIMC) and those from reaction ensemble Monte Carlo (REMC) simulations. The main idea of this proposal is based on the fact that the DPMIC technique provides first-principle results for a wide range of densities and temperatures including the region of partially ionized plasmas. On the other hand, for lower temperatures where the formation of molecules becomes dominant, DPIMC simulations become cumbersome and inefficient. For this region it is possible to use accurate REMC simulations where bound states (molecules) are treated on the Born-Oppenheimer level. The remaining interaction is then reduced to the scattering between neutral particles which is reliably treated classically by applying effective potentials. The resulting Hugoniot is located between the experimental values of Knudson et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 87, 225501 (2001)] and Collins et al. [Science 281, 1178 (1998)].

Micron-sized particle-charge measurements in an inductive rf gas-discharge plasma using gravity-driven probe grains.

A method for measuring the interactions of charged dust particles within a three-dimensional dust cloud in a plasma is presented. The measurements have been performed with the help of gravity-driven heavy charged probe particles, which moved through a dust cloud levitating at the diffuse edge of an inductively coupled rf discharge plasma. Assuming a screened Coulomb potential surrounding each particle, both the particle charge and the effective screening length were calculated from an analysis of the elastic particle interactions for 20, 30, and 50 Pa of neon pressure. The basic parameters of the bulk discharge plasma have been diagnosed with a Langmuir probe to compare the experimental data with those deriving from different theoretical approaches. The observed discrepancies are discussed.

Three-particle correlations in nonideal dusty plasma.

Results are given of experimental investigation of three-particle correlations for liquid plasma-dust structures formed in the electrode layer of a high-frequency capacitive discharge. The obtained three-particle correlation functions for experimental and numerical data are analyzed and compared with the superposition approximation. The forming of clusters of macroparticles in plasma-dust systems being analyzed is revealed.

Electrostatic modes in collisional complex plasmas under microgravity conditions.

A linear dispersion relation in a highly collisional complex plasma, including ion drift, was derived in the light of recent PKE-Nefedov wave experiment performed under microgravity conditions onboard the International Space Station. Two modifications of dust density waves with wave frequencies larger than the dust-neutral collision frequency were obtained. The relevance to the space observations was analyzed and a comparison of theory and observations was made for two different complex plasma domains formed by small and large microparticles. Good qualitative agreement is found between the measurements and the theoretical dispersion relations. This allows a determination of the basic complex plasma parameters.

Large-amplitude dust waves excited by the gas-dynamic impact in a dc glow discharge plasma.

A large-amplitude wave with two humps of dust density, separated by a dip was generated. To excite the wave in the dc glow discharge dusty plasma a gas-dynamic impact was used. The structure obtained had several interesting properties such as strong compression of dust in the humps, supersonic dust particles in the rarefaction zone, reconstruction of the initial dust configuration after the passing of the wave. The peculiarities of the phenomenon observed are discussed. The mechanism of generation and propagation for such kind of perturbation is proposed.

Decharging of complex plasmas: first kinetic observations.

The first experiment on the decharging of a complex plasma in microgravity conditions was conducted. After switching off the rf power, in the afterglow plasma, ions and electrons rapidly recombine and leave a cloud of charged microparticles. Because of microgravity, the particles remain suspended in the experimental chamber for a sufficiently long time, allowing precise measurements of the rest particle charge. A simple theoretical model for the decharging is proposed which agrees quite well with the experiment results and predicts the rest charge at lower gas pressures.

Complex-plasma boundaries.

This study deals with the boundary between a normal plasma of ions and electrons, and an adjacent complex plasma of ions, electrons, and microparticles, as found in innumerable examples in nature. Here we show that the matching between the two plasmas involve electrostatic double layers. These double layers explain the sharp boundaries observed in the laboratory and in astrophysics. A modified theory is derived for the double layers that form at the discontinuity between two different complex plasmas and at the point of contact of three complex plasmas. The theory is applied to the first measurements from the Plasma Kristall Experiment (PKE) Nefedov Laboratory in the International Space Station.

Criteria of phase transitions in a complex plasma.

New empirical rules for different phase transitions (including the melting of cubic lattices and the transitions between body-centered-cubic and face-centered-cubic structures) are proposed. The arrangements of charged macroparticles in a complex "dusty" plasma are numerically investigated for the conditions of laboratory experiments on weakly ionized gas discharges.

Diffusion in microgravity of macroparticles in a dusty plasma under solar radiation.

Diffusion of macroparticles, charged by solar radiation in microgravity, is studied by analyzing experimental data obtained on the MIR space station. Temperature, velocity distributions, friction coefficient, and diffusion constants were obtained for bronze particles. A comparison of experimental and theoretical estimates shows that the dynamic behavior of the macroparticles for short observation times can be determined by observing the ambipolar diffusion.

Positively charged particles in dusty plasmas.

The trapping of dust particles has been observed in a dc abnormal glow discharge dominated by electron attachment. A dust cloud of several tens of positively charged particles was found to form in the anode sheath region. An analysis of the experimental conditions revealed that these particles were positively charged due to emission process, in contrast to most other experiments on the levitation of dust particles in gas-discharge plasmas where negatively charged particles are found. An estimate of the particle charge, taking into account the processes of photoelectron and secondary electron emission from the particle surface, is in agreement with the experimental measured values.
