[A method for the primary biological assessment of the photodynamic activity of photosensitizers in a nontumor model in vivo].

In comparison with traditional laboratory methods of photosensitizers screening in vitro and in vivo on transplanted tumors, the proposed method of PDA evaluation has the advantages. Criterion of PDA is the quantitative characteristic--the area of photodynamic necrosis on the surface of laboratory mice liver 24 hours after combined action. According to the screening results, PDA of photosensitizers is distributed: AIPcS2-3 > AIPcS1 > Photofrin-2 > AIPcS3 > or = HpDChina > Fotosan-3 > Fotosan-2. Morphological research allows to characterize PDA of photosensitizers qualitatively. Thus, AIPcSx derivatives have more expressed cytolytic and nucleotropic effect on parenchyma cells (hepatocytes) in comparison with HpD derivatives.

[Pathogenesis of porphyrin-sensitized lethal and sub-lethal photo-injury].

By means of morphological methods the mechanisms of thanatogenesis were studied in 57 white mice after the hematoporphyrin derivative administration and xenon lamp radiation imitating the sun spectrum. In dependence of integrative doses of sensitized photoradiation and individual resistance of the organism there was observed immediate (hours), retained (days) and remote (weeks) death of animals. In the first two groups death came as a result of photocoagulation of plasma proteins and toxemic shock with liver, lung and brain injury, and in the third group--as a result of suppurative resorptive intoxication against the background of ulcerous skin necrosis.

[Abrikosov's tumor].

Histologic and ultrastructural features of 11 Abrikosov's tumors located in various sites are described. They all had similar structures and comprised tumor cells of two kinds, polygonal and spindle-shaped. Both contained dark as well as clear cells that differed in the composition and number of cytoplasmic inclusion bodies and glycogen granules. Three types of specific cytoplasmic bodies were identified. Type 1 bodies had a peculiar shape resembling a tennis racket; type 2 were round, tended to fuse with one another, were intimately linked up with the endoplasmic reticulum, and bore structural similarity to Berbek's granules in Langerhans cells; while type 3 bodies were larger than the other types and ellipsoid in shape. The authors suggest on the basis of their findings that Abrikosov's tumor cells are related histogenetically to Langerhans cells.

[Diagnosis of epithelioid sarcoma].

Epithelioid sarcoma is a rare soft tissue tumour. Small-nodular structure, necrotic foci in the centre of tumour nodes, moderate lymphocytic infiltration are characteristic histologic features of this tumour. Majority of tumour cells have the appearance of epithelioid histiocytes. Some tumour cells are found in small cavities resembling hyalin cartilage lacunes. Signs of a synovial, fibroblastic and histiocytic differentiation are observed ultrastructurally in the epithelioid sarcoma cells On the basis of the literature analysis and their own ultrastructural data the authors conclude that there should be a relation of this tumor with pluripotential stem cells of mesenchyma surrounding distal part of the chondral bone germ.

[Melanoma with a rhabdopoietic differentiation (ectomesenchymoma)].

This is the first description in Russian literature of histological and electron-microscopic structure of an exophytic skin mesenchymoma with melanocytic and rhabdomyopoietic differentiation. The presence in the tumour of cells-hybrids possessing the two differentiations allows one to suppose a histogenetic link of this tumours with pluripotential cells of neuroectoderm.

[Histological and ultrastructural characteristics of morphological variants of neurilemmoma].

On the basis of histological and ultrastructural study of 57 neurilemmomas 4 main morphological types of tumour are distinguished; with a prevalence of the Antoni A type tissue, with a prevalence of the tissue of the transitory zone, prevalence of the Antoni B type tissue and a fibrosing variant of neurilemmoma. A variety of the morphological variants of neurilemmoma is due to different quantitative combination of morphological sings of degeneration and necrosis of tumour cells with the organization of the aseptic necrosis of tumour cells with the organization of the aseptic necrosis by their replacement with a fibrous tissue. The peculiarity of the peripheral nerve blood supply is a premise for the development of tumour cell degeneration.

[Benign tumors of the peripheral nerve sheaths].

Benign tumors from sheaths of peripheral nerves (25 neurolemmomas and 6 neurofibromas) were studied. The ultrastructural data presented attest to the principal differences between these tumors and the possibility of their differential diagnosis. The typical signs of tumor cells of neurilemmoma include numerous complicatedly interwoven processes not infrequently forming " pseudomesaxonal " structures, and the presence of permanent basal membrane. These signs indicate the histogenetic relationship of neurilemmoma with cells of the Schann sheath of the peripheral nerve ( lemmocytes ). Neurofibroma tumor cells were characterized by the presence of bipolar thin, long non-interwoven cytoplasmic processes with inconstant basal membrane, desmosome-like contacts between the processes, and pinocytic vesicles in the cytoplasm. The revealed ultrastructural signs indicate the histogenetic relationship of neurofibroma with cells of the perineurium of peripheral nerves.

[Tumors developing in an epidermal cyst].

The paper presents clinical and morphological characteristics of neoplasms arising in epidermal cysts (73 observations). It is emphasized that the epithelium of epidermal cyst may be the source of growth of not only benign cystic epithelioma ("proliferating epidermal cyst" as designated by the foreign authors) but also of squamous cell carcinoma. Cystic epithelioma (54 observations) is a slowly growing tumor represented by outgrowths in the cyst lumen of differentiated squamous epithelium apt to form smaller cysts. A predominance in cystic epithelioma of the basal type cells and complexes of squamous epithelial cells with hyperchromic and slightly polymorphous nuclei (7 observations) is considered to be the initial sign of malignancy of the noninvasive cancer type. Cancer arising in epidermal cyst (11 observations) is characterized by rapid growth, invasion into derma and trend for relapses. Frequently it has the structure of keratinizing squamous cell carcinoma. A malignant tumor is described characterized by a combination of cystic epithelioma, squamous cell carcinoma of pseudosarcomatous structure in some areas and glandular formations whose origin is obscure.

[The pharmacokinetics of hematoporphyrin, its derivative and fluorescein during the development of carcinosarcoma].

The pharmacokinetics of fluorescein, hematoporphyrin and a derivative of hematoporphyrin was studied microspectrofluorometrically on rats with transplanted carcinosarcoma. It was shown that in the rats in contrast to intact animals the tissue concentration of fluorescein exhibits a general tendency towards an increase, that of hematoporphyrin towards a decrease and that of hematoporphyrin derivative towards an increase in all parenchymatous organs and a decrease in the skin and mucosae of the hollow organs. At the equally short period of the maximal accumulation of luminophores, the tumour tissue differs from the normal one by a pronounced delay of excretion only of hematoporphyrin derivative.

[The pharmacokinetics of fluorescein, hematoporphyrin and its derivative during the development of granuloma].

In experiments on rats with granuloma reproduced by subcutaneous implantation of foreign material there was shown a slowing of excretion from the organism as well as a considerable redistribution between the organs of fluorescein, hematoporphyrin and its derivative as compared with intact animals. The noted changes practically did not depend on the time of granuloma development.
