[Compensatory ovarian hypertrophy during alloxan diabetes and adrenoreceptor blockade].

The sexual cycle ceases in rats with alloxan diabetes. Chronic administration of phentolamine promoted interruption of the sexual cycle while obsidan was conducive to its preservation in part of the animals. Most diabetic rats both given and not given adrenoblockers showed the complete absence of compensatory hypertrophy of the ovary (CHO). As shown by the analysis, the content of gonadotropins in the pituitary glands of diabetic rats was increased, with the response to chorionic gonadotropin being close to normal. It is suggested that the absence of CHO in most diabetic rats can be accounted for by the fact that after removal of one ovary the hypothalamohypophyseal system does not secrete gonadotropins in adequate amounts.

Alloxan↗

[Development of alloxan diabetes and its effect on the sexual system of male rats under conditions of alpha adrenergic receptor blockaders].

A study was made of the influence of the block of the alpha-adrenoreceptors in male rats on the development of alloxan diabetes and on such its complication as depression of the sexual system function. Phetholamine sharply decreased the death of the animals the first 3--4 days after the alloxan administration: only 5.3% of the animals died. As to rats with intact alpha-adrenoreceptors--42% of the died. Block of the alpha-adrenoreceptors decreased the percentage of rats with marked diabetes. In 37.2% of rats given alloxan and phentholamine diabetes was very mild or failed to develop entirely. Phentholamine significantly lowered the depressive effect of alloxan diabetes on the sexual system considerably.

[Reactivity of the adrenals to ACTH in rats with alloxan diabetes].

Experiments were conducted on rats. A study was made of the adrenal gland ACTH reactivity under conditions of alloxan diabetes. The function of the adrenal gland increased one month after the administration of alloxan; this was indicated by an increase of their absolute and relative weight, by an elevation of the corticosterone content in the peripheral blood and the glands proper. ACTH stimulated the adrenal gland function in rats with an intact pancreas, increasing the weight of the adrenal glands, the level of corticosterones in the blood and the adrenal glands. ACTH reactivity proved to be lowered in rats with alloxan diabetes. The blood corticosterone level increased in them less and changes in the weight of the glands and of the hormone concentration in them proved to be statistically insignificant.

[Reactivity of castrated female rats to estrone in alloxan diabetes].

After the administration of alloxan (in 23 days) to adult female rats the mass of the ovaries, the uterus, and the vagina altered, but the height of the uterine endometrium and the thickness of the vaginal epithelial layer decreased. When estron was administered to castrated rats with alloxan diabetes the mass of the uterus and the vagina and the height of the uterine endometrium, and of the epithelial layer of the vagina increased to the same degree as in rats with the intact pancreas; reactivity of diabetic rats to estrogen approached the sensitivity of animals with normal pancreatic functions.

[Effect of prolonged administration of the adrenergic blockaders, fentolamin and obsidan, on the course of alloxan diabetes in rats].

Administration of phentholamine or obsidan to rats for 3 weeks sharply diminished the diabetogenic action of alloxan. The insular tissue of the pancreas became less affected, and the percentage of animals with signs of diabetes (polyuria, glucosuria, and hyperglycemia) decreased. Hyperglycemia (averaging 276 and 286 mg%) was revealed in the majority of the animals given alloxan and adrenoblockers. Phentholamine sharply suppressed the development of polyuria in rats with intact pancreas following water load, but obsidan produced no such effect. The mechanism of action of adrenoblockers used on polyuria and glucosuria in animals given alloxan is suggested on the basis of experiments with water load.

[Effect of an adrenoreceptor block on ovarian function and hypophyseal gonadotropic function in rats].

Experiments were conducted on rats. Sexual cycle, the state of the sexual system, and the gonadotropic activity of the hypophysis were studied in chronic administration of phentholamine and obsidan. Sexual cycle was found to be disturbed in 60% of rats given phentholamine and in 25% of animals to which obsidan was administered. There was no change in weight of the ovaries or of the uteri in rats treated with adrenoblockers. At the same time the height of the uterine epithelium was diminished, and also a distinct elevation of gonadotropin activity of the hypophysis was seln. It is suggested that chronic administration of adrenoblockers was accompanied by inhibition of gonadotropins secretion from the hypophysis; reduction of the hormonal function of the ovaries ensued.
