[Effect of cardioplegia on nitrogen and energy metabolism of the human heart].

The interrelation between the energy and nitrogenous metabolism of the myocardium during cardioplegia has been studied in patients with congenital valvular heart disease (tetralogy of Fallot--12 patients, ventricular septal defect--5 patients). Whole body hypothermia with repeated heart reperfusion with cold cardioplegic blood perfusate was used for the protection of the myocardium. However, ATP level of the myocardium of some patients decreased by 20% and more of the baseline. This loss was accompanied by a reduction in glutamate and aspartate levels and a rise in ammonium and alanine levels in the myocardium (by 17.7 +/- 3.8; 17.6 +/- 5.9; 61.4 +/- 12.5 and 92.4 +/- 26.3% of the baseline, respectively).

[Electrophysiological study of the cardiotropic action of phenothiazine-derivative anti-arrhythmia preparations].

Cardiotropic action of antiarrhythmic agents etmozin and etacizin, phenothiazine derivatives, was studied electrophysiologically in 42 mongrel dogs (using isolated heart and intact body models). Etmozin produced no direct effect on sinus node function, whereas etacizin suppressed it in isolated hearts. Etmozin and etacizin significantly affected the atrial, atrioventricular-node and His-Purkinje conduction time, having no basic effect on the duration of respective refractory periods. Therefore, they can be referred to antiarrhythmic agents, group 1, subclass C. The magnitude and pattern of etmozin-and etacizin-induced electrophysiologic changes in the isolated heart and the integrated system are basically similar, an evidence of cardiotropic effects of these drugs. The model of an isolated dog heart perfused by a donor dog's blood can be used for the assessment of cardiotropic effects of drugs in preclinical trials of new antiarrhythmic agents.

[Laser endoscopic destruction of the atrioventricular junction of the heart conduction system in an experiment].

Feasibility and degree of local AV junction destruction were studied prior to the induction of complete transversal block on the model of 18 isolated perfused dog hearts, using endoscopic laser device, employing cardiofibroscope and laser Ne: YAG. Morphological pattern in the destruction zone is presented. The technique and device can be used for transvenous AV junction destruction.

Animals

[Effect of 5-fluorouracil on the enzymatic activity of the pancreas and blood serum of rats with acute pancreatitis].

The effect of 5-fluorouracil on the activity of pancreatic enzymes was studied in rats with acute pancreatitis. 5-Fluorouracil was injected intraperitoneally in a dose of 4.5 mg per 100 g body weight. Pancreatic transaminidase as well as serum alpha-amylase and trypsin levels decreased starting from 3--6h after the induction of acute pancreatitis. 5-Fluorouracil inhibited RNA and DNA synthesis and blocked the synthesis of pancreatic enzymes.

Acute Disease

[Protein biosynthesis in the fibrillating perfused heart during normal oxygenation and following anoxia].

Methionine incorporation into proteins of the fibrillating dog heart perfused by donor circulation was investigated. In the heart in which fibrillation was induced by electric current under conditions of adequate oxygen supply a 50-55% increase of methionine S35 incorporation into the contractile protein fraction of both ventricles was observed. In the heart in which fibrillation appeared after anoxia, methionine S35 incorporation into the sum total proteins of the atria showed 40-60% depression, into the sarcoplasmic - 36 -53%, and into the contractile proteins of both ventricles - 18 -30% decrease.

[Experimental basis of a new method of determination of coronary blood flow with the aid of electromagnetic flowmeter].

Canine experiments have demonstrated the high precision of measurements performed with the aid of modern electromagnetic flowmeters (1-2%). Under such conditions, cuff transducers of a large diameter permit to record low volume flow rates. Proceeding from this observations, the authors have introduced and experimentally substantiated a new method of measuring the coronary blood flow that consists in the determination of the minute volume gradient between the pulmonary artery trunk and the ascending aorta. In contrast to the existing techniques of coronary flow measurements, the introduced method has several advantages (it takes into account the total coronary flow, permits high precision and an unlimited number of repeated measurements in a dynamic observation), but it can be employed only in the course of surgical interventions on the heart after the ascending aorta has been separated from the trunk of the pulmonary artery.
