[Experimental measurement of force exerted by palatal bars. 1].

The Authors have prepared a protocol of research to evaluate the forces of lateral expansion expressed by the palatal bar et different degrees of activation. A special instrument has been built to this purpose. The forces expressed at the different degrees of activation are then evaluated and confronted in relation to the following variables: --length of the bar;--the presence or the absence of a U loop; --the more or less bowed conformation given to the bar. It is shown how, on the same terms, the presence of the U loop reduces the force made by the bar by about the half and that the more or less bowed conformation of the bar influences the force in the same way.

[Evaluation of training programs for purchasing and using pesticides].

Courses to enable farmers to use pesticides are an ideal opportunity to implement prevention programs. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of the courses and to define parameters to validate the teaching methods used. The population consisted of 307 individuals who followed the courses during 1991 in the province of Viterbo. A multiple choice questionnaire was administered before and after the course. A knowledge coefficient (KC) was considered as an indicator of knowledge improvement gained by the course. Wilcoxon's non-parametric test was used to compare pre- and post-test scores. A multivariate logistic model was designed to assess the effect of descriptive variables (age, educational level, years of work in agriculture, etc.) on KC. Post-test scores were significantly higher than pre-test scores and the mean KC was 60%, suggesting a general efficacy of the courses. A marked effect of age and educational level on KC was observed: KC values decreased with increase in age and with decrease in educational level. It is recommended to vary the courses according to age and educational level in view of the high proportion of older subjects and the low educational level (about 50%). Active learning methods should also be used as far as possible.

The possible role of hematin and Mössbauer effect in the inhibition of osteosarcoma cell proliferation.

Hematin, like many hematoporphyrines and porphyrin derivatives, shows a higher affinity and preferential localization for tumor cells. These properties are particularly interesting in view of their possible applications in tumor treatment. The aim of the present work was to test the capability of porphyrines and resonant low energy gamma rays to produce some kind of selective inhibition of tumor cell proliferation. We investigated the role of hematin to potentiate the killing capability of 14.4 keV resonant gamma rays from a 57Co Mössbauer source. Human osteosarcoma cell cultures "MG-63" were incubated in the presence or absence of hematin (10(-4) to 10(-5) M) for 24 hours. They were successively irradiated for 4 hours with 14.4 keV gamma rays from a 3.7 GBq 57Co source. The combined effects of hematin and resonant gamma radiation were then examined and tested statistically for significance. Different degrees of growth inhibition were observed when hematin alone, radiation alone, and hematin plus gamma rays were administered to the cultures. Hematin, at the concentrations of 10(-4) M is capable of inhibiting tumor cells growth. While no significant effect is attributable to irradiation alone, hematin plus irradiation show a larger inhibition than that expected for purely additive effects.
