Superslow backbone protein dynamics as studied by 1D solid-state MAS exchange NMR spectroscopy.

Superslow backbone dynamics of the protein barstar and the polypeptide polyglycine was studied by means of a solid-state MAS 1D exchange NMR method (time-reverse ODESSA) that can detect reorientation of nuclei carrying anisotropic chemical shift tensors. Experiments were performed on carbonyl 13C in polyglycine (natural abundance) and backbone 15N nuclei in uniformly 15N-enriched barstar within a wide range of temperatures in dry and wet powders for both samples. Two exchange processes were observed in the experiments: molecular reorientation and spin diffusion. Experimental conditions that are necessary to separate these two processes are discussed on a quantitative level. It was revealed that the wet protein undergoes molecular motion in the millisecond range of correlation times, whereas in dry protein and polyglycine molecular reorientations could not be detected. The correlation time of the motion in the wet barstar at room temperature is 50-100 ms; the activation energy is about 80 kJ/mol. Previously, protein motions with such a long correlation time could be observed only by methods detecting chemical exchange in solution (e.g., hydrogen exchange). The application of solid-state MAS exchange spectroscopy provides new opportunities in studying slow biomolecular dynamics that is important for the biological function of proteins.

Kabuki make-up (Niikawa-Kuroki) syndrome in the Byelorussian register of congenital malformations: ten new observations.

We describe clinical manifestations and historical data on ten patients with Kabuki make-up syndrome. All patients are of European ancestry and all have the characteristics of the syndrome, including typical face, retarded physical development, and mild to moderate mental retardation. Two of the probands have low-normal intelligence. Prominent and broad philtrum was described as an important component manifestation of the syndrome. In three families some clinical manifestations of Kabuki make-up syndrome were observed in parents and some other relatives of the probands in three generations. Some phenotypic differences between Asian and non-Asian patients were noted. The possible cause of the syndrome is discussed. The present observations and a literature review suggest autosomal dominant inheritance with different expressivity of the Kabuki make-up syndrome.

Results of TV imaging of Phobos (Experiment VSK-Fregat).

From February to March 1989 the Phobos 2 spacecraft took 37 TV images of Phobos at a distance of 190-1100 km. These images complement Mariner-9 and Viking data by providing higher-resolution coverage of a large region West of the crater Stickney (40-160 degrees W) and by providing disk-resolved measurements of surface brightness at a greater range of wavelengths and additional phase angles. These images have supported updated mapping and characterization of large craters and grooves, and have provided additional observations of craters' and grooves' bright rims. Variations in surface visible/near-infrared color ratio of almost a factor of 2 have been recognized; these variations appear to be associated with the ejecta of specific large impact craters. Updated determinations of satellite mass and volume allow calculation of a more accurate value of bulk density, 1.90 +/- 0.1 g cm-3. This is significantly lower than the density of meteoritic analogs to Phobos' surface, suggesting a porous interior perhaps containing interstitial ice.
