Novel charge transfer supramolecular assemblies with Keggin anions and 2-amino-5-nitropyridine.

Several novel compounds with the non-linear optical chromophore 2-amino-5-nitropyridine (2A5NP) and Keggin polyoxoanions (alpha-isomers), having the general formula (2A5NP)(m)H(n)[XM12O40].xH2O, M = Mo, W, were synthesised. Compounds were obtained with X = P, n = 3, m = 3 and 4 and X = Si, n = m = 4 (x = 2-6). Thus, for each of the anions [PMo12O40]3- and [PW12O40]3- two different compounds were obtained, with the same anion and organic counterpart but with a different stoichiometric ratio. These presented different charge transfer properties and thermal stability. All compounds were characterised by spectroscopic and analytical techniques. The single crystal X-ray diffraction structure of (2A5NP)4H3[PMo12O40].2.5H2O.0.5C2H5OH showed that the water solvent molecules and the organic chromophores are assembled via infinite one-dimensional chains of hydrogen bonds with formation of open channels, which accommodate [PMo12O40]3- and ethanol solvent molecules.

Enantioselectivity in Ni(II) Schiff-base complexes derived from amino-acids and (S)-o-N-(N-benzylprolyl)aminobenzophenone: molecular structure of several chiral Ni(II) Schiff-base complexes, circular dichroism and molecular mechanics studies.

Several Ni(II) complexes derived from (S)-o-N-(N-benzylprolyl)aminobenzophenone ((S)-BBP) and amino acids of general formula [Ni((S)-BBP-L-(or D-)-aa)] were prepared. The crystal and molecular structures of [Ni((S)-BBP-Gly)], [Ni((S)-BBP-L-Ser)] and [Ni((S)-BBP-L-aaIm)](aaIm =L-2-amino-3-(imidazol-1-yl)propanoate were determined by X-ray diffraction analysis. In the three complexes the nickel atoms display a square-planar coordination and the overall structure around the metal indicates that the entire Schiff-base ligands form quite rigid frameworks. Molecular mechanics calculations were carried out for complexes [Ni((S)-BBP-Gly)], [Ni((S)-BBP-Ser)] and [Ni((S)-BBP-aaIm)] containing either the L- or D-amino acid forms, and the factors controlling the stereoselectivity are discussed. Several other [Ni((S)-BBP-L-aa)] complexes are also prepared and their circular dichroism spectra in solution and of the solids dispersed in KBr disks are measured and discussed. In agreement with other studies in solution with similar [Ni((S)-BBP-aa)] complexes, the Cotton effects for the bands with lambda(max) at 520--530 nm are positive when the amino acids have the L-configuration at the alpha-carbon. The same is observed in this work for the solid-state CD spectra of all compounds.

Isolated and syndromic cryptophthalmos.

The association between cryptophthalmos and multiple congenital malformations has been well documented over the last century. Numerous authors have described cases as the cryptophthalmos syndrome, but recently reports of cases without cryptophthalmos have led several authors to use the eponymic designation Fraser syndrome. We have seen seven cases of cryptophthalmos syndrome, including three sib pairs. All presented with cryptophthalmos and bilateral renal agenesis in addition to other characteristic associated malformations. A literature review showed 124 cases in which 27 demonstrated isolated cryptophthalmos, while 97 showed a pattern of multiple congenital malformations. We selected four major and eight minor criteria which enabled us to classify 86 of those cases as having cryptophthalmos syndrome with 11 remaining unclassified. Cryptophthalmos demonstrates equal sex distribution, occurrence in sibs, consanguinity in families with more than one affected child, and lack of vertical transmission--strongly suggesting autosomal recessive inheritance. Isolated cryptophthalmos or cryptophthalmos sequence was sporadic in 16 cases and familial in 11. The familial cases occurred in three families and demonstrated vertical transmission. The pathogenesis of this syndrome is unknown. There are similarities to animal models of maternal vitamin A deprivation and defects in programmed cell death. Cryptophthalmos syndrome should be considered in the differential diagnosis of cases with multiple congenital malformations, especially when they are associated with renal agenesis, even in the absence of cryptophthalmos.
