[Morphofunctional changes in the skin in foot mycosis].

Sixteen specimens of cadaveric intertoe folds of patients who had suffered from intertrichinous mycoses of the soles (miners who died in accidents or because of traumas) were examined by histologic and histochemical methods. For control intertoe fold specimens from 10 suddenly dead workers without mycoses were examined. Examinations of skin specimens from mycosis foci have revealed fungus mycelium in the epidermis and superficial layers of the derma, focal perivascular infiltrates consisting mainly of T-lymphocytes (a positive reaction to alpha-naphthylacetate esterase), macrophages, sensitized lymphocytes (high acid phosphatase activity); this necessitates administration, along with mycocidal agents, of angioprotectors, proteolysis inhibitors, immunostimulants. Histoenzymologic studies have revealed impairments of the principal components of metabolism and activation of glycolysis processes. Less manifest changes were revealed in apparently intact skin, this being an evidence of a systemic involvement of the skin in a prolonged mycotic process.

[Experimental substantiation of occlusion of the pancreatic ducts in acute destructive pancreatitis].

All the 6 animals with the model of acute destructive pancreatitis died at day 2-3 from progressive pancreonecrosis, endogenous intoxication and dystrophic changes in the parenchymatous organs. After occlusion of the pancreatic ducts, acinous tissue atrophy began from the end of the second week, total atrophy occurred after 3 mos. Diabetes mellitus didn't develop for 2 years. Treatment of acute destructive pancreatitis by means of a full-value occlusion of the pancreatic ducts lead to recovery of the animals, and is perspective for the use in clinics.

[Renal clear cell tumors: morphology, histochemistry, ultrastructure, differential diagnosis].

To define criteria for differential diagnosis of renal clear cell adenoma and grade I clear cell carcinoma, morphological, morphometric, histochemical, and ultrastructural studies were undertaken to examine 30 renal clear cell tumors (18 carcinomas and 12 adenomas). No morphological, morphometric, histochemical, and ultrastructural differences were found between the tumors, but the average tumor size was smaller in the adenoma than in the carcinoma. Clinically and morphologically, clear cell adenoma should be classified as grade I clear cell carcinoma of stage I, which has a relatively favourable prognosis by virtue of its small node sizes.

[Validation and experience in the use of local oxygen therapy in the system of the combined treatment of psoriasis patients].

Comprehensive examinations of dermal morphology and function, carried out in 50 patients suffering from psoriasis, have revealed manifest hypoxia, depression of the intramitochondrial energy production, reduction of the cellular synthetic potency, increased protein catabolism, impaired transcapillary transport and vascular and tissue permeability, immediate and delayed type hypersensitivity local immune reactions. Basing on these findings, the authors have developed a new effective method for multiple modality treatment of psoriasis patients. The new scheme includes, besides the routine modalities (sedative and lipotropic drug, vitamins, UV irradiation, diets, ointments), subcutaneous injections of oxygen into the large foci (200 ml daily, 12-18 injections per course, alternating the injection sites) and oral intake of copper sulfate and reduced iron (3 times daily after meals for 20-30 days). The study has involved 112 patients with psoriasis (61 patients in the test group and 51 in the reference one). Clinical and morphologic examinations have demonstrated the advantages of the new method: clinical remission has occurred 1.8 times more often, the length of treatment has been cut by 7 days, an earlier and more complete recovery of the morphofunctional characteristics of the dermis has been achieved.

[The degree of malignancy and histologic variants of kidney cancer: their importance in diagnosis and prognosis].

Basing on quantitative morphological and histochemical findings, 170 cases of renal carcinoma were divided into 3 (I, II, III) grades of malignancy. This grading system is of a high prognostic significance. Histological variant, i.e. the predominance of clear or granular cells in the tumor specimens, is not prognostically significant. The clear cells differ from the granular ones by high lipid and glycogen content and by low proliferation rate. In tumors of a high malignancy grade the lipid and glycogen levels are low. The authors offer to divide all cases of renal carcinoma not into clear- and granular-cell tumors, but on lipid-rich and lipid-poor ones because the lipid content is in good correlation with the grade of malignancy and therefore prognostically valuable.

[Diagnostic and prognostic value of the morphological status of the mucosa of the nasal cavity in dust bronchitis].

Histologic and immunologic studies of nasal mucosa in 56 coal miners with work records ranging from 3 to 19 years were undertaken in an attempt to assess their diagnostic and prognostic value with regard to bronchitis caused by exposure to dust. Collation of the results with clinical, X-ray, functional, and laboratory data indicated that prolonged dust exposure impairs the protective and adaptive responses in the airways to a degree that correlates with the duration of exposure and individual features of the exposed organism.

[Comparative characteristics of the stroma of renal adenomas and cancer].

In a comparative study of 120 renal carcinomas and 10 adenomas it was found that in the adenomas the stroma as well as vessels were uniform with respect to distribution and degree of maturity and showed only scanty lymphoid infiltration, but that in the carcinomas, on the contrary, the distribution was irregular and lymphoid infiltration was much more abundant, particularly in areas of invasive growth. A close correlation was observed between stromal morphology and proliferative activity of the tumor. It is concluded that morphologic differences between these two kinds of tumor may be of use in diagnostic differentiation.

[Morphology and morphogenesis of psoriasis].

Comprehensive morphologic studies of material from postmortem examinations of 7 psoriatic patients (3 with progressive and 4 with stable psoriasis) indicated systemic progressive involvement of connective tissue and vessel walls--with development of proliferative and destructive vasculitis in the microcirculatory bed--as the underlying morphologic feature of the disease. Excessive epidermal proliferation was due to the damage sustained by basement membranes and to gross disorganization of the connective tissue and vessel walls, which compromised the collagen-mediated regulation of epithelium-mesenchyme interactions.

[Pathomorphosis of bladder cancer after endolymphatic polychemotherapy].

Clinical and morphological features of urinary bladder transitional carcinoma pathomorphosis after regional endolymphic polychemotherapy were studied to estimate the criteria of treatment efficiency and prognosis. Quantitative assessment of chemosensitive and chemoresistant tumours is given. The degree of cataplasia, growth character, the amount of stroma, blood supply and intensity of mononuclear infiltration predetermine the stage of pathomorphosis, efficiency of bladder cancer treatment. Studies of stromal immunomorphology, features of blood supply, mechanisms of neoplastic angiogenesis provide better understanding of biological nature of tumours, improve prognosis and choice of treatment.
