Is stealing a gateway crime?

Stealing behaviors are common among youth and adolescents and often begin in early ages due to a variety of developmental, behavioral, and social factors. This study explores the prevalence of stealing behaviors in a South Texas juvenile detention facility. Researchers discovered stealing was the most frequently reported offense followed by the lack of supervision. Youth arrested for stealing were also more likely to be arrested prior to their twelfth birthday, have subsequent charges that may include assault, and have multiple charges. Results with implications for interventions are provided.

Change in perceived barriers and facilitators to treatment among women with HIV/AIDS as a function of psychosocial service utilization.

Using a repeated assessment of 185 women with HIV in three national service demonstration projects that focus on reducing barriers to care, self-reported barriers to obtaining services decreased significantly over time. At the earliest time asked, participants scored an average of 5.23 on a measure of barriers to obtaining care. At the most recent time asked, they scored an average of 4.05 on the barrier measure. In a subsample of 122 women with HIV, it was found that self-reported facilitators to obtaining services increased significantly over time. At the first time asked, participants scored an average of 8.40 on a measure of facilitators to receiving services. At the most recent time asked, they scored an average of 8.98 on the facilitator measure. Results are discussed in terms of implications for designing services to minimize barriers and maximize facilitators to care for people living with HIV/AIDS.

Risk behaviors and the prevalence of Chlamydia in a juvenile detention facility.

The prevalence of Chlamydia trachomatis, a sexually transmitted disease, and the association of selected behavioral risk factors were assessed in a population of adolescents in two juvenile detention facilities. Urine was collected for Chlamydia testing and a brief interview conducted for risk and demographic information. Almost all of the 200 participants were sexually active, many before the age of 13 years. The prevalence of Chlamydia infection was 22.2% among female and 8.7% among male participants. Injection drug use was the only statistically significant variable associated with infection. Education and community services are necessary to break the cycle of infection for this high-risk population.

Stress in families of HIV-positive children living in south Texas.

The purpose was to conduct a pilot study of the extent of stress and differences in sources of stress experienced by HIV+ and HIV- caregivers of HIV+ children living in South Texas. 13 infected and 9 uninfected caregivers each completed the Questionnaire on Resources and Stress for their preschool-aged HIV+ child. Both HIV+ and HIV- caregivers experienced clinically significant stress. HIV+ caregivers reported that relative to the HIV- group, they perceived themselves to be in poorer physical or emotional health, to receive less social support from others, and to be less pessimistic about the future of their child or family.
