Relationship between radiological classification and the serological and haematological features of untreated pulmonary tuberculosis in Indonesia.

Immunological and metabolic responses were studied in 110 patients with newly diagnosed pulmonary tuberculosis and 32 healthy controls from similar socioeconomic backgrounds. The severity of lung involvement was assessed radiologically, but this was not related to the current features of cell mediated immunity or to those of many aspects of the serological response to Mycobacterium tuberculosis. However, the patients with more extensive pulmonary tuberculosis showed higher titres of IgG2 antibody to whole killed M. tuberculosis and to the ML34 epitope shared by many species of mycobacteria. The patients with more extensive pulmonary tuberculosis showed a more marked metabolic response to infection as manifested by changes in serum levels of acute phase reactant proteins. Accordingly, the metabolic responses are considered to be more likely to prove of value in clinical monitoring of patients for severity of infection, or of reactivation of infection with M. tuberculosis, than immunological responses.

Skin evaporative water loss (SE) and skin conductance (SC) under various psychophysiological conditions.

A procedure for measuring tonic and phasic reaction components of skin evaporative water loss (SE) on the basis of a capacitive measurement principle is developed and used in a psychophysiological study employing various stimulus conditions. SE and skin conductance (SC) are registered continuously to obtain comparative data of both biosignals for research concerning the underlying mechanisms of EDA. Results indicate that correlations of some phasic parameters of SC and SE prove to be rather high (up to 0.88), tonic parameters (the levels SCL and SEL), however, show less covariance (0.44). The intersituational discriminative efficiency of SC-parameters appears generally better than those of SE. SCL, as well as SEL, show the highest percentage of person variance. A rather high redundancy of the two biosignals, both taken from neighbouring areas of the right palm, has been found. An unexplicable residual may, however, lend some support to the notion of a partial independence of EDA from sweating.

Drug resistance study of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in Canada, February 1, 1993 to January 31, 1994.

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the prevalence of resistance of Mycobacterium tuberculosis to first-line antituberculosis drugs in Canada. METHODS: M. tuberculosis isolates from one third of all culture-positive tuberculosis (TB) cases diagnosed between February 1, 1993 to January 31, 1994 in Canada were collected prospectively. Proportion of drug-resistant isolates and the factors related to drug resistance were measured. RESULTS: Of 458 study cases, 40 (8.7%) had resistance to at least one first-line antituberculosis drug, of which 5.9% had mono-resistance, 0.7% had multidrug-resistance(MDR-TB)--i.e., resistance to at least isoniazid and rifampin--and 2.2% had other patterns. The overall prevalence of resistance among the foreign-born cases was 10.6% with the highest level among those who resided in Canada for less than four years (15.5%). CONCLUSIONS: Canada has a relatively low prevalence of antituberculosis drug resistance and a very low prevalence of MDR-TB. Some new immigrants to Canada may be at higher risk for drug resistance and their initial treatment needs to be tailored accordingly.
