Nonlinear evolution of surface morphology in InAs/AlAs superlattices via surface diffusion.

Continuum simulations of self-organized lateral compositional modulation growth in InAs/AlAs short-period superlattices on InP substrate are presented. The results of the simulations correspond quantitatively to the results of synchrotron x-ray diffraction experiments. The time evolution of the compositional modulation during epitaxial growth can be explained only including a nonlinear dependence of the elastic energy of the growing epitaxial layer on its thickness. From the fit of the experimental data to the growth simulations we have determined the parameters of this nonlinear dependence. It was found that the modulation amplitude does not depend on the values of the surface diffusion constants of particular elements.

Gerstmann-Straüssler-Scheinker disease.

In three out of six investigated cases of familially occurring dementia in adult age, the neuropathological examination disclosed Gerstmann-Sträussler-Scheinker disease, morphologically characterized by the presence of amyloid plaques and spongy condition of the brain grey matter. The spongy condition makes this disease related to Creutzfeldt-Jacob disease. The presence of the amyloid plaques signalizes an extreme production of the protein material which accumulates in them and which will be different from the amyloid in the senile plaques in Alzheimer's disease, and probably corresponds with infectious protein substances--prions or protein-like particles (PLP).

[Gerstmann-Sträussler-Scheinker disease].

In three of six observations of familial dementia in adult age neuropathological examination revealed Gerstmann-Sträussler-Scheinker's disease characterized from the morphological aspect by amyloid plaques and a spongious state of the gray matter of the brain. As to the latter characterization the disease is close to Jacob-Creutzfeld's disease. The presence of amyloid plaques signalizes extreme production of protein material which cumulates. It is obviously different from amyloid of senile plaques in Alzheimer's disease and corresponds probably to infectious protein material-prions.

[Leiomyoblastoma of the digestive tract].

Five cases of leiomyoblastoma of the stomach and one located in the small intestine have been reported. Two of the gastric tumours metastasized. The characteristic feature of leiomyoblastoma is vacuolation of the cytoplasm of polygonal tumour cells, with regularly demonstrable transitions into smooth muscle cells. The size of the neoplasm and the presence of mitoses do not represent sufficiently reliable features permitting to recognize the biological behaviour of the tumour. Cellular and nuclear pleomorphism seemed to be a much more reliable index of malignancy in the two cases of ourselves.
