Detection of the electron spin resonance of two-dimensional electrons at large wave vectors.

We have investigated the electron spin resonance at nonzero wave vector in GaAs single quantum wells by combining the virtues of high frequency surface acoustic wave generation to produce excitations with large wave numbers with a sensitive optical scheme to detect resonant absorption. The observed large deviations from the single particle Zeeman energy are attributed to the exchange interaction. The enhancement of the electronic g* factor is, however, substantially smaller compared with theoretical predictions for spin waves when adopting a bare Coulomb interaction potential.

Spin-orbit coupling and anisotropy of spin splitting in quantum dots.

In lateral quantum dots, the combined effect of both Dresselhaus and Bychkov-Rashba spin-orbit coupling is equivalent to an effective magnetic field +/- B(SO) which has the opposite sign for s(z)= +/- 1/2 spin electrons. When the external magnetic field is perpendicular to the planar structure, the field B(SO) generates an additional splitting for electron states as compared to the spin splitting in the in-plane field orientation. The anisotropy of spin splitting has been measured and then analyzed in terms of spin-orbit coupling in several AlGaAs/GaAs quantum dots by means of resonant tunneling spectroscopy. From the measured values and sign of the anisotropy we are able to determine the dominating spin-orbit coupling mechanism.

Spin-orbit coupling effects on quantum transport in lateral semiconductor dots.

The effects of interplay between spin-orbit coupling and Zeeman splitting on weak localization and universal conductance fluctuations in lateral semiconductor quantum dots are analyzed: All possible symmetry classes of corresponding random matrix theories are listed and crossovers between them achievable by sweeping magnetic field and changing the dot parameters are described. We also suggest experiments to measure the spin-orbit coupling constants.

Energy dependence of quasiparticle relaxation in a disordered fermi liquid.

A spectroscopic method is applied to measure the inelastic quasiparticle relaxation rate in a disordered Fermi liquid. The quasiparticle relaxation rate gamma is deduced from the magnitude of fluctuations in the local density of states, which are probed using resonant tunneling through a localized impurity state. We study its dependence on the excitation energy E measured from the Fermi level. In a disordered metal (heavily doped GaAs) we find that gamma~E3/2 within the experimentally accessible energy interval, in agreement with the Altshuler-Aronov theory for electron-electron interactions in diffusive conductors.
