[Mycelial waste of tetracycline production as a component of the nutrient medium].

A new composition of the nutrient medium for cultivation of the tetracycline-producing organism was developed with the fermentative hydrolysate of the tetracycline production mycelial waste as a source of nitrogen: 0.02 to 0.04 g/l by amino nitrogen. The use of the medium made it possible to increase the tetracycline yield by 5 to 25 per cent, to exclude cornsteep liquor from the medium composition, to provide a more efficient recovery of the waste and to significantly decrease the environment pollution.

[Effects of fiber bronchoscopy on partial pressure of oxygen in the skin of miners with diseases of respiratory organs].

Influence of fiber bronchoscopy (FBS) on the partial tension of oxygen (pO2) in the skin was studied in 17 respiratory disorders affected miners, with no stable FBS-caused gas exchange disorders established. The patients affected with atrophic endobronchitis actually did not exhibit pO2 changes in response to FBS. In the catarrhal and hypertrophic endobronchitis cases, FBS-related pO2 content decrease was registered with subsequent increase to the initial level 24 hours later, which was explained by bronchial permeability improvements after the FBS procedures.

[Enzymatic hydrolysis of mycelial waste from the production of tetracycline].

The process of enzymatic hydrolysis of the mycelial waste from the manufacture of tetracycline with using Streptomyces aureofaciens was studied. For the enzymatic hydrolysis, neutral and alkaline proteinases were used. It was shown that alkaline proteinase (protosubtilin G10X) provided the most efficient hydrolysis. Optimal conditions for the hydrolysis were determined: a temperature of 42 degrees C, hydrolysis time of 4 to 6 hours and enzyme concentrations of 1.25 to 2.20 mg/ml at a mycecial waste concentration of 12.5 mg/ml. The time course of changes in amino acid and amine nitrogen levels during enzymatic hydrolysis was investigated. It was demonstrated that the hydrolysis efficiency depended on the mode of enzyme addition. The highest efficiency was observed with fractional feeding of the enzyme.

[Use of mycelial waste from the drug industry].

It was shown that mycelial waste (MW) from manufacture of riboxin and neomycin was useful as an active filler for press compositions and a raw material for fuels. Addition of MW to a polymer press composition, depending on the amount added, provided a 2-10-fold decrease in the time of gel formation in the mixture and hardening of the products as well as a significant decrease in their shrinkage during the hardening. Optimal physicomechanical properties were achieved when the contents of MW and polymer in the press composition were equal. Pyrolysis of dry MW at a temperature of 450-500 degrees C resulted in formation of a product which was not inferior to the known fuels in its physicochemical properties. The low freezing point of the prepared fuel as compared to that of oil fuels allowed one to recommend it as a low-temperature additive to the fuels lowering their freezing points.

[Diagnostic errors in silicotuberculosis (clinical-autopsy comparisons)].

Basing on 42 post-mortem examinations of silicotuberculosis cases, the contributors display the most frequently encountered errors in diagnosing this disease. Silicotuberculous bronchadenitis, conglomerate-cirrhotic lower-lobe silicotuberculosis and their complications (e.g. concomitant pericarditis and endobronchitis) are the most difficult cases for detection. To avoid diagnostic errors, a most detailed case history study is needed, along with a complex clinico-functional and tomography examinations, a wide use of endoscopy and bacteriological techniques.

[Bronchoscopic diagnosis of pulmonary tuberculosis in miners].

Two hundred and thirty nine records of bronchoscopic examination of miners from iron ore mines, including 114 patients with active pulmonary tuberculosis were studied and the frequency of specific and nonspecific endobronchitis and functional, anatomical and hemocirculatory disorders was determined. Qualitative estimation of the endoscopic symptoms and computer-assisted analysis enabled one to validate the direct and probabilistic bronchoscopically evident signs of active tuberculosis. The data on the mature, frequency and diagnostic value of some endoscopic signs should be considered in differentiation of tuberculosis in miners (without pneumoconiosis).

[Isolation of the causative agent of Karelian fever from Aedes sp. mosquitoes].

The results of isolation of an Alphavirus strain from Aedes sp. mosquitoes collected in the focus of Karelian fever are presented. According to the results of serological studies, the isolated strain LEIV-9298 Karelia belongs to the antigenic complex Sindbis-Western equine encephalomyelitis. The appurtenance of the isolated agent to the Alphavirus genus has been confirmed by electron microscopic examinations. A rise of antibody titres to LEIV-9298 Karelia virus in paired sera of subjects with a history of Karelian fever allows it to be considered the causative agent of this disease.
