The article deals with the genetic bases of breeding of eukaryotic microorganisms. Using the data on the Saccharomyces yeasts, application of different genetic approaches and methods to breeding is discussed, including interstrain, interlinear, and distant interspecific hybridization, as well as heterosis, polyploidy, cytoduction, and meiotic recombination.
The hybrids between Saccharomyces cerevisiae sensu Naumov et al. 1983, S. bayanus sensu Vaughan Martini et Kurtzman 1985, S. paradoxus sensu Naumov 1986 tester strains and greatly abundant Saccharomyces genetic lines were analyzed. The latters were showed to classify as Saccharomyces cerevisiae species. The intraspecific hybrids are fertile and give normal meiotic segregations of control markers, the interspecific hybrids are characterized by sterility through the unviability of ascosporous posterity.

A collection of genetic lines in 8 reproductively isolated Pichia species has been created. The above data have permitted realizing intraspecific hybridization and showing normal meiotic segregation of auxotrophic markers.
