[Factors of random selection in epidemiological surveys].

In epidemiological surveys the association of variable under study, for example, morbidity and conditions of work, may be distorted by phenomena of selection. The most frequent effect of selection is "the effect of healthy worker" which consists in lower morbidity and mortality of workers as compared to the population at large. This effect can mask the pathogenic action of environmental conditions. Under other circumstances multiple effects of selection, on the contrary, may additionally enhance the association between morbidity and the environmental conditions. The elimination of selection errors is possible, if the analysis of data takes into account the broad range of variables capable of affecting the dependence. The issue of causative nature of dependence should be solved proceeding from the analysis of the aggregate data on the problem.

Biological effect of a hypogeomagnetic environment on an organism.

In an age of a scientific and technical revolution, when many operators work in structures shielding the geomagnetic field (GMF) by a factor of 100 or more, the urgency of this problem is shown. To study the effect of a hypogeomagnetic environment on warm-blooded organisms, series of experiments were conducted on rabbits that passed through entire embryogenesis and grew to an age of one month in a shielded chamber where the GMF was reduced by a factor of 600. The results obtained confirm that the effect of the GMF is needed for normal development of the organism. Degenerative disturbances in the liver, myocardium, and gastrointestinal tract were noted in animals reared in a reduced GMF. Structural and energy metabolism are disturbed, and the marked inhibition of activity of the investigated enzymatic systems, except the glycolytic, is shown. Changes in the motor activity of the experimental animals and insufficiency of the neuromuscular apparatus were revealed. The mortality rate among the experimental animals was statistically higher than for the controls. The authors raise the question of the need for further comprehensive investigations of the established effects of the hypogeomagnetic environment.

[Effect of flying on the health status of pilots in the light of epidemiologic data].

This paper gives an analytical review of epidemiological data about the morbidity and mortality rate of the flying personnel. It shows that the flying personnel differs from the general population in their better health condition which manifests as lower morbidity and mortality rates in every large group of disease. This better health status of the flying personnel may be a result of their adequate selection. The selection makes it difficult to identify relationships between disease and flight effects. Information about these relationships is contradictory and/or insufficient. Proper assessment of flight effects on the health condition of the flying personnel needs further controlled epidemiological investigations.

The importance of K. E. Tsiolkovskii's ideas in the formation and development of space medicine.

The importance of K. E. Tsiolkovskii's ideas in the formation and development of space medicine is argued. The author analyzes K. E. Tsiolkovskii's science fiction writings and his basic researchs in aerodynamics and rocket techniques and shows that, besides the technical aspects of the problem, Tsiolkovskii penetrated deeply into the nature of the biological phenomena and revealed their essentials in a series of short descriptions. Tsiolkovskii argued convincingly in support of the view that man can withstand the action of factors of space flight and, step by step, can conquer cosmic space.
