Tumor marker CA 125 in diagnosis, monitoring management and follow-up of patients with ovarian tumors.

The concentration of CA 125 was defined in the blood serum of 151 patients with ovarian tumors: benign--49, borderline--5 and malignant--97. In 75.7% of benign tumors CA 125 concentrations did not exceed the normal level. In two from five patients with borderline tumors CA 125 concentration varied from 47 to 130 U/ml. High levels of CA 125 (from 125 to 10.000 U/ml and higher) were revealed in 54 from 57 patients (94.7%) with malignant ovarian tumors. If in Stages I and II elevated CA 125 levels (from 125 to 430 U/ml) were discovered in 71.4% and 80.0% of the cases, respectively, then in Stages III and IV CA 125 levels rose from 300 to 10.000 U/ml and higher in all cases. High CA 125 concentrations were noticed in 95.7% of patients with clinical signs of recurrences of the disease, and it was proved at "second-look" surgery. Thus, it was expedient to use CA 125 widely for an early detection of ovarian cancer, as a control on the efficiency of therapy and in diagnosis of subclinical recurrences of the disease.

[Radionuclide study of calcium homeostasis during combined treatment of lymphogranulomatosis].

The paper is concerned with a study of the levels of total and ionized Ca and calcitropic hormones in the peripheral blood of primary patients with Hodgkin's disease and at different stages of treatment. Altogether 27 primary patients, 18 patients after radiotherapy and 30 patients after chemotherapy were examined. The absorption of 131I-glycerin trioleate in the intestine was determined in 15 patients during chemotherapy. Twenty healthy persons entered into the control group. No differences in the levels of total, ionized Ca, calcitonin and parathyroid hormone in the blood were noted, on an average, either in the patients or in the controls. The absorption of glycerin trioleate was unchanged in the patients as compared to the controls. An increased evacuation of the gastric content into the intestine was observed in the patients. The results obtained were suggestive of the absence of the ectopic production of calcitonin and parathyroid hormone in Hodgkin's disease. Modern intensive care of these patients did not result in Ca homeostatic disturbances in them.

[Value of various functional indicators in the prognosis and evaluation of surgical results in peptic ulcer].

A number of functional disorders were revealed in patients with ulcer disease of the stomach and duodenum prior to operation and in the postoperative period. The investigation of them before operation facilitates prognosis of possible postoperative functional disorders (dumping syndrome, post-vagotomy atony of the stomach) and individualization of the surgical tactics.

[Radioimmunological determination of thyrotropic hormone, triiodothyronine and thyroxine in lymphogranulomatosis during radiation and combined therapy].

The basal levels of triiodothyronine, thyroxin and the thyrotropic hormone were determined in the blood serum of patients with Hodgkin's disease prior to and shortly after radio- and multimodality therapy. Statistically significant reduction of the T3 concentration and elevation of TTH level were revealed in the blood of patients before treatment as compared to the control group. The above changes do not disappear immediately after radio- and multimodality therapy.
