[The nature and results of the treatment of eye burns based on data from the Chernovtsy Province Eye Trauma Center].

The character and results of eye burn treatment have been studied in 226 patients (307 eyes) aged from 10 to 80 years. The analysis of the character of eye burns has shown that the overwhelming majority of them were chemical ones (80.54%), of them 50% being alkaline. As to degree of severity, burns of moderate degree predominated (58.74%). The greatest part of the sufferers had everyday-life burns (67.7%). Results of treatment depended, mainly, on the severity of the burn. By the results of treatment, the patients were divided into 4 groups: group I included patients with total restoration of corneal transparency, who can return to their former labor activity; group-II patients with partially lost visual functions on account of remained, moderately expressed cicatricial opacifications of the cornea, who in future require repeated courses of resolving therapy; group-III patients with a remarkable loss of visual functions on account of coarse cicatricial opacifications of the cornea, who in future require surgical treatment--keratoplasty, keratoprosthesing and other surgical interventions; group IV-patients with total restoration of corneal transparency after treatment, but with insufficiently high visual acuity because of associated changes in the optic media and the eye fundus (beginning cataract, macular dystrophy, etc.), who require dispensary observation and treatment of associated diseases.

[The dynamic glaucomatous process based on the data from the long-term dispensary observations of patients operated on in the initial stage of the disease].

Effectiveness of surgical treatment of primary initial glaucoma in remote terms has been studied in 179 patients (185 eyes). The period of observation was 20 years. Stable normalization of intraocular pressure in remote terms was recorded in 155 (83.77%) eyes, of them after a single operation in 121 (65.41%) eyes, after repeated operations in 16 (8.64%), after operation and pilocarpine instillations into the operated eye in 12 (6.48%) and clofeline or optimole instillations into the operated eye in 6 (3.24%) eyes. The cause of unstable normalization of intraocular pressure was cicatrization in the area of filtration zone and the presence of synechiae in the anterior chamber angle. Stabilization of glaucomatous process was achieved in 101 (54.59%) of 185 eyes operated on. The fall of central vision was connected with both progression of glaucoma and the presence of associated diseases (cataract, macular dystrophy, etc.).

[An analysis of the efficacy of ambulatory care of patients with glaucoma detected in the initial stages of the disease].

The study of effectivity of various terms of dispensary treatment of glaucomatous patients revealed at the initial stage of the disease was conducted by out-patient cards. The study covered 469 out-patient cards of glaucomatous patients aged from 35 to 85 years. The analysis of the results obtained has shown that normalization of intraocular pressure within the first year of dispensary treatment was achieved in 260 (55.4%) patients; surgical treatment was used in 144 (30.7%) patients. Dynamic observation in remote terms has shown stable normalization of intraocular pressure in 275 (58.6%) patients, its unstable normalization in the rest. Stabilization of visual functions took place in 338 (72.1%) patients. The most frequent turn of initial stage of glaucoma into subsequent ones is recorded to take place within 5 years of dispensary observation over the patients.

[Efficacy of combined conservative treatment of patients with initial open-angle glaucoma].

The effectiveness of complex treatment of patients with the initial stage of glaucoma has been studied in 100 patients, aged from 40 to 85 years. The complex treatment included instillations of pilocarpine, pilocarpine in combination with optimol into the conjunctival sac; the usage of agents improving microcirculation, trophicity, metabolic, oxidation-reduction processes in the body and antisclerotic preparations. The analysis of the results obtained has shown normalization of intraocular pressure in 77% and improvement of hydrodynamic indices in 78% as well as improvement of neurotrophic processes in 86% of patients. The rest of the patients required surgical intervention.
