Strategies in Doppler ultrasound.
A computer based system integrating a continuous wave 10 MHz Doppler ultrasound system with a standardising electrocardiographic record has been developed and tested. Data storage and duplication are intrinsic elements in the system which also includes on line analysis of the data. The electrocardiograph permits exact timing and standardisation of the pulse wave forms. The results can be displayed and printed. The controlled data provides a valid basis for comparison. Data obtained from patients suffering from amaurosis fugax are presented and discussed.

Doppler ultrasound as an adjunct for the investigation of amaurosis fugax.
This study demonstrates the ability of Doppler ultrasound using both a simple Doppler technique and Duplex scanning to identify lesions at the carotid bifurcation. The procedure is non-invasive and is of little discomfort to the patient. Doppler ultrasound provides a sound basis for clinical evaluation of vascular disease.

Pilocarpine administration by contact lens.
A previous investigation had indicated that pilocarpine delivered to the eye by means of a hydrophilic contact lens provided better control of the intraocular pressure over a longer period and with a smaller concentration of pilocarpine. To clarify the situation further, an animal experiment was undertaken with radioactive labelled pilocarpine. Three situations were compared: pilocarpine administered by a contact lens, by drops, and by subconjunctival injection. The results indicated that the contact lens gave a greater concentration of the pilocarpine in the iris and ciliary body than either the drops or the subconjunctival pilocarpine. A high concentration of pilocarpine was achieved in the conjunctiva with drop administration and was comparable to that of subconjunctival administration.

Rapid pneumatic and Mackey-Marg applanation tonometry to evaluate the postural effect on intraocular pressure.
A postural study was conducted in three separate groups of subjects. The first group comprised 20 women volunteers with an average age of 20-75 years. In this group, the study was conducted by the pneumatonograph only. Mean pressure recorded was 15-65 +/- 0-25 mmHg and there was an average rise of 1-4 mmHg in supine posture. Groups 2 and 3 comprised 151 non-glaucomatous and 108 glaucomatous eyes respectively in the age range of 30 to 85 years. In these two groups, the study was conducted using the PTG and the Mackay-Marg tonometer. Clinical evaluation of the Mackay-Marg with the PTG gave significant correlation, with mean Mackay-Marg readings being 1-13 mmHg higher. The intraocular pressure when changing from seated to the supine position increased on average by 2-71 and 4-04 mmHg, respectively in Groups 2 and 3 and by 2-51 and 3-72 mmHg by Vackay-Marg, suggesting a higher change in glaucomatous subjects. Pressure on resumption of sitting was found to be lower than the initial pressure. Postural change also showed some direct relationship with age in non-glaucomatous subjects.
A clinical evaluation of the applanation pneumatonograph.
The applanation pneumatonograph combines pneumatic and electronic systems. It is used for measuring intraocular pressure, aqueous humour dynamics, and ocular pulsation. In the present study the PTG and the Goldmann tonometer have been used to measure the intraocular pressure in 40 normal and 40 glaucomatous eyes. It has been found that the results of the two instruments correlate well. The PTG readings have, generally, been found to be higher with a mean difference of 0-75 mmHg in the normal and 1-25 mmHg in the glaucomatous eye. The mean ocular pulse as determined in normal eyes was 3-25 +/-0-21 mmHg.

Outbreak in Bristol of conjunctivitis caused by adenovirus type 8, and its epidemiology and control.
In an investigation of an outbreak of adenovirus type 8 infection involving over 40 people it was found that the infection spread initially within the eye hospital, but subsequently involved several family contacts and two local hospitals for mentally subnormal patients. Presumptive diagnosis should be possible before subepithelial opacities have developed provided an adequate history is taken, and had that been done in this outbreak it is reasonable to suppose that many cases could have been prevented.
