Effect of treatment on systolic time intervals in systemic arterial hypertension.

Twenty six hypertensive patients and 25 control subjects were studied and their systolic time intervals (STI) were measured. It was found that an alteration in STI, signifying left ventricular dysfunction sets in most of the hypertensives earlier than any evidence of left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) by clinical, radiological or electrocardiographic criteria. The parameters affected are the PEP interval which shows prolongation and PEP/LVET ratio which is increased. After treatment the left ventricular performance was found to improve in those who did not reveal evidence of LVH. Thus STI may be a sensitive indicator of early left ventricular dysfunction in hypertensives and a useful guide to assess improvement after treatment at a stage when other non-invasive methods are not so useful.

Changes with age in the human kidney.

Histologic and micrometric studies have been performed to examine changes with age in the kidney of 100 autopsy cases ranging from 1 to 70 years of age. The number of tubular cells and glomerular cells decreased significantly during aging. The number of glomerular tufts per unit area also decreased significantly with advancing age. The size of malpighian corpuscles, glomerular tufts, nuclei of glomerular cells and nuclei of tubular cells increased significantly in senile kidneys. The statistical analysis revealed that the values of the coefficient of variation generally increased with advancing age.

Lipofuscin pigment accumulation in the central nervous system of the mouse during aging.

Histopathological and autofluorescence investigations were carried out to study lipofuscin pigment accumulation in various age groups of mice. Qualitative studies revealed an increase of lipofuscin pigment accumulation in old animals. Quantitative studies showed a significant increase in the percentage of pigmented nerve cells and the percentage of cytoplasmic areas occupied by lipofuscin pigment granules with advancing age.

Lipofuscin pigment accumulation in human brain during aging.

Histopathologic and autofluorescence investigations were carried out to study lipofuscin pigment accumulation in various age groups of human beings died in accidents (in 100 cases ranging from 1-70 years-of-age). Lipofuscin pigment granules were first observed to appear at 9 years of age. Qualitative studies revealed a progressive increase in the intracellular lipofuscin pigment accumulation with advancing age. These pigment granules were found to congregate in mass in nerve cells of old individuals. An increase in the lipofuscin pigment accumulation and decrease of Nissl substance was observed during aging. The percentage of pigmented nerve cells and the percentage of cytoplasmic area occupied by lipofuscin pigment granules increased significantly with the advancement of age.
