[Combined neutron and gamma-therapy of tongue cancer].

The authors conducted a comparative study of the electivity of various schemes of interstitial therapy with 252Cf of 37 tongue cancer patients with tumors corresponding to the clinical stage T2N0M0. The immediate, short- and long-term results of contact neutron therapy alone, by the conventional scheme of combined therapy and a new method were assessed. Interstitial neutron therapy of a primary tumor was given at the first stage, gamma-beam therapy of a primary focus and regional metastatic zones was given at the second stage. A focal dose of neutron therapy was 3.5 Gy, dose rate 10-14 cGy/h. In 5-6 days neutron therapy was followed by a course of gamma-beam therapy at a focal dose of 40 Gy. The results of the study corroborate the conclusions of clinical radiobiology to the effect that neutron therapy damages cancer cells at the first stage more than gamma-rays. This facilitates the process of reoxygenation of tumors and increases general radiosensitivity to subsequent gamma-beam therapy. A mathematical analysis of the patients' survival has shown advantages of this therapeutic method.

[Mathematical modeling of the kinetics of a heterogeneous cell population during tumor growth. II. A numerical study and some generalizations].

The phasic portrait of the system describing dynamics of a heterogeneous cell population of the tumor is built up by means of numerical methods. The decisions of the system are examined for a sufficiently common consideration on the functional relations of the intensities of changeable processes between the fractions of cell populations.

[Optimization of intracavity irradiation in the treatment of cancer of the corpus uteri using high-activity sources].

The paper is concerned with an analysis of the results of concomitant therapy of corpus uteri cancer, Stage I-II, in 70 patients with relation to the regimen of intracavitary irradation using high energy sources on the Agat-B afterloading unit. Therapeutic efficacy, the frequency and severity of radiation complications were evaluated depending on the regimen of contact irradiation. Short-term results of concomitant radiation therapy were improved when passing over from a scheme of intracavitary irradiation of 10 Gy a week to schemes of dynamic fractionation and twofold irradiation a week at a dose of 5 Gy. The authors emphasize the inappropriateness of the use of large focal doses of 10 Gy during contact irradiation with high energy sources because in these cases exceeding tolerance of normal tissues is observed, particularly in patients of advanced age with noticeable somatic pathology.

[Monolayer culture study of colony-forming bone marrow cells from patients with lymphogranulomatosis].

Measurements of colonies diameter in monolayer cultures of bone marrow in 21 patients with lymphogranulomatosis (an active process and the state of clinical remission) and in 5 healthy donors with subsequent mathematical processing of the results indicated that in most patients with active lymphogranulomatosis and in some patients being in the state of clinical remission, in contrast to healthy donors, the distribution of colonies in diameter is not in accord with the normal law of the distribution. The reliability of the phenomenon observed and its significance for recognition of active lymphogranulomatous process are supported by an additional mathematical analysis.
