[Changes in arginase activity during neurinoma growth].

Arginase activity was studied in the brain and other tissues of the rat at the different periods of neurinoma growth. The activity of the enzyme was considerably activated in the affected hemisphere on the 4th day, in the skin of the head and thigh on the 6th day after tumor transplantation. Elevation in arginase activity in the neoplasm itself was recorded on the 16th day. The data obtained point to the physiological significance of arginase during neurinoma growth.

[Cyclic nucleotides of human and animal glial tumors].

Studies on the level of cyclic nucleotides (cAMP and cGMP) in human and animal glial tumours showed that the content of both nucleotides, especially that of cAMP, decreases in all the tumours. The cAMP/cGMP ratio also drops down. Concurrently it appears to be the most consistent parameter of nucleotide metabolism both in brain tissue and in human or animal glial tumours. The growing tumour affects cAMP and cGMP metabolism not only in the involved but also in the other hemisphere. No principal differences between human and animal tumours have been revealed in the content of cyclic nucleotides and its variation in tumour tissue.

[Changes in the level of cyclic nucleotides in brain tumors].

Cyclic 3-5-adenosine-monophosphate and 3-5-guanosinemonophosphate concentrations were studied in the bioptate of brain tumors, examined during neurosurgical operation and in normal brain tissues. The correlations between cyclic nucleotides in the tumors appeared to be significantly decreased in comparison to the intact tissue, being a characteristic signs for all types of tumors. There were significant fluctuations in the level of cyclic nucleotides both in the tumours and nontumorous brain tissues. There were no correlations found between the level of cyclic adenosine-monophosphate and cyclic guanosine-monophosphate on the one hand and the duration of the disease, localization of the tumor, degree of the brain oedema and the type of narcosis on the other.

[Cyclic 3',5'-AMP metabolism in progressive muscular dystrophy patients].

Concentration of cyclic AMP was distinctly decreased in muscular tissue of patients with Dushenn's myodystrophy. Simultaneously, in patients with the myopathy basal activity of adenylate cyclase as well as activation of the enzyme by adrenaline and sodium fluoride were decreased. As a compensation, activity of phosphodiesterase was also decreased. Content of cAMP, activity and activation of adenylate cyclase were similar to normal state in patients with Erb's and Landuzi--Dejerin's myopathies; activity of phosphodiesterase was increased in the latter impairment. Dissociation constant for binding of cAMP by protein kinases was more than 10-fold decreased in patients with these types of myopathy.

[Change in the cyclic nucleotide system components in neurogenic myopathies].

Values of Kdiss of the "protein kinase-cAMP" complex were decreased 2-6-fold in muscular tissue of patients with neurogenic myopathies. An increase in affinity of the protein kinase to cAMP correlated with the severity of the disease. Alteration in the cAMP-sGMP ratio, due to decrease in cGMP content, was found in patients with side amyotrophic sclerosis.

[The possible role of disruptions of the cyclic AMP system in the pathogenesis of thyrotoxic myopathies].

The value of kdiss of the "proteinkinase-cAMP" complex was increased 1.8-fold, number of the nucleotide binding sites was increased 3.7-fold with simultaneous decrease in cAMP concentration, when the cyclase system was studied in skeletal muscles of mice with experimental thyrotoxic myopathy. Activities of phosphodiesterase, adenylate cyclase, rate of activation of adenylate cyclase by adrenaline and sodium fluoride did not significantly differ as compared with normal values. Impairment of hormonal regulation of the cAMP-dependent processes is apparently responsible for multiple molecular and structural injuries in skeletal muscles in thyrotoxicosis.

[Protective reaction of brain cells during change in permeability of the blood-brain barrier].

General anesthesia carried out in neurosurgical operations caused liberation of neurospecific proteins into blood. High content of these antigens was maintained in biological fluids within 7 days, which occurred apparently due to activation of biosynthesis. Antibodies to the antigens were detected only within 21 days after the surgical intervention. A gross liberation of specific proteins into blood, occurring under critical conditions, appears to be a protective response of brain cells to autoimmune impairments.
