The application of energy-dispersive x-ray fluorescence spectrometry (EDXRF) to the analysis of cosmetic evidence in Indian nail polishes.

The application of energy-dispersive x-ray fluorescence (EDXRF) spectrometry in the quantitative analysis of samples of Indian nail polishes of apparently similar shades from different manufacturers has been examined by evaluating the possibility of detecting spurious material which is marketed under the guise of a popular brand. On the basis of the number of elements detected, and from the ratios of particular elements [Fe/Ti, Fe/Cu, Ti/Cu] the results are very encouraging.

Renal functional response to dopamine during and after arteriography in patients with chronic renal insufficiency.

The potential renal vasodilatory effect of dopamine in improving renal function after arteriography was studied. Sixty patients with preexisting renal insufficiency were prospectively randomized into two groups. Patients in the treated group (n = 30) received an infusion of dopamine for 12 hours starting at the beginning of arteriography. Patients who received placebo infusion with arteriography (n = 30) served as controls. The study was conducted in two different time intervals. In the first interval, serum creatinine levels and 12-hour creatinine clearance values were obtained before and immediately after arteriography in 12 patients in the dopamine group and 13 patients in the control group. In the second interval, the same variables were measured before arteriography and for 3 consecutive days after arteriography in 18 patients in the dopamine group and 17 patients in the control group. Serum creatinine levels became significantly elevated in the control group on the 1st day and remained so on the 3rd day after arteriography, whereas the dopamine group did not show significant elevation of these levels. Creatinine clearance decreased in the control group on the 1st day, but this deterioration was not sustained on the 3rd day. In the dopamine group, there was no deterioration in creatinine clearance on either day, and mean effective renal plasma flow during and after arteriography was greater.

Fatal respiratory obstruction due to round worm.

Respiratory obstruction caused by a round worm is rate. A fatal case of the complication in a three-year-old child was encountered at the Nehru Hospital attached to the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh, India.

Airway Obstruction

Isolated tuberculosis of appendix.

Two patients with acute appendicitis are discussed. On histologic examination both were found to have tuberculosis associated with pyogenic infection. Subsequent investigations failed to reveal tuberculous lesions elsewhere in the body. Both patients have responded well to appendectomy and antituberculous drug therapy.

Adult

Amoebic liver abscess. Review of 220 cases.

Two hundred and twenty cases of amoebic liver abscess were seen between 1981-1986. The majority were young or middle aged males belonging to the lower socio-economic group and 85% gave a history of drinking toddy (fermented palm juice). The highest incidence of the disease occurred during the peak toddy season (April to July). Toddy drinkers become susceptible perhaps because of the large dose of Entamoeba histolytica and bacteria ingested with the drink, associated malnutrition, poor hygiene, hepatic dysfunction and possible suppression of amoebistatic substance. Useful investigations consisted of skiagram and ultrasonography, the later being sometimes used to guide the aspiration needle to abscesses situated at unconventional sites. Over 88 per cent responded well to conservative treatment with aspiration(s). Laparotomy was required in slightly over 10% of cases and in these the mortality was 12% as compared to 2% with conservative treatment. Although a large amount of liver tissue appears to be destroyed, the residual liver damage is clinically, biochemically, macroscopically and microscopically minimal.
