The influence of a wide range of living conditions and other socioeconomic factors on the health status of various population groups in Russia and foreign countries is considered. There is a great difference in their accesses to health care to promote health. In Russia, it is being aggravated by instability of socioeconomic transformations and deviations in their hygienic behavior of large population groups, thus causing great losses, particularly due to high premature death rates among males.
It is becoming increasingly recognized that patient or 'consumer' views should be taken into account as part of a comprehensive assessment of quality of care. This paper reports a study carried out in four European countries about consumer satisfaction with primary care. The results showed that higher levels of general satisfaction with general practitioner services were found in Canterbury (95%) and Ioannina (87%) than Belgrade (85%) and Moscow (62%). Further analysis of the data showed that in all four cities the key dimensions of satisfaction with general practitioner care are both the nature in quality of the doctor-patient relationship and the GP's professional skills. The implications of these findings are discussed.

Within the limits of the study undertaken by WHO Regional Office for Europe population's satisfaction of district physician's performance was assessed. 516 adult inhabitants of a big city were interviewed using the adapted variant of the questionnaire. As a result a desired by the population model of personal and professional qualities of this most popular public health figure was created. The work done indicates the advisability of using sociological surveys as one of the criteria of health care delivery for the population.
The paper contains theoretical provisions and methods of information supply of public health programmes under conditions of the improvement of management and broadening of independence of local public health bodies. Emphasis is being placed on the role of fundamental studies in the formation of population's health and methods of multifactor analysis permitting to identify regional health problems and to substantiate priority measures. There is a discussion of the system of health indices and activities of public health bodies and institutions which are to be used in economic methods of management along with the evaluation of health programmes efficiency according to the ultimate results. Periodic probe investigations of health problems and the degree of population's satisfaction with health care contribute considerably to this practice. The materials of the complex study of population's health in connection with the 1989 census of the population in many respects meet these requirements and the paper provides ways for the organization and cooperation with the chairs of social hygiene while carrying out this large-scale study.
The study was carried out with the help of adapted questionnaire of WHO Regional Office for Europe by interviewing 516 adult residents of a big city. The role and place of ethiopsychological, deontological and organizational factors were determined in the formation of one of the components of end results--the degree of patient's satisfaction. The advisability of using interview surveys of population as one of the criteria in the organization of medical care to the population is emphasized.
