[Feasibilities of cytological diagnosis in the static telepathology mode].

Results of cytological diagnosis in the static telepathology mode are analyzed. Three expert cytologists made the diagnosis on the basis of images of cytological preparations obtained from 94 patients with tumors of soft tissues and bones. A total of 113 diagnoses were correct: benign or malignant type of the tumor and its histological type were identified. In general, a total of 152 (88.9%) diagnoses were correct as regards their significance for treatment strategy. Errors classified as groups 3 and 4 were the most significant (erroneous assessment of tumor type--benign or malignant--in 6.4% cases). Analysis of discrepancies between cytological and pathoanatomical diagnoses and data of routine optic microscopy of similar cytological preparations of the same material (bone and soft tissue tumors) showed the same value: 6.8% of cytological and pathoanatomical diagnoses were at disagreement (groups 3 and 4 of errors). Therefore, telepathology can be resorted to for consultations and discussion of obscure cases. It is particularly important for a morphologist to discuss complex cases by means of telepathology at a specialized institution, distant from him or her.

[A simple method of continuous passage of human tumors in immunocompetent mice].

A simple procedure is described for the continuous passage of a human tumor in immunocompetent mice. The BRO human melanoma was transplanted consecutively 25 times by implanting tumor tissue under the sub--renal capsule of mice which had been immunosuppressed by a single dose of whole--body irradiation or by cytosine arabinoside followed by irradiation. The tumor grew continuously for 14 days, and cytological examination showed that the growth consisted almost entirely of tumor cells.

[Intensive growth of human melanoma cells in a fibrin clot implanted in immunosuppressed mice].

BRO human melanoma cells encapsulated within a fibrin clot grew rapidly in mice immunosuppressed (IS) by wholebody irradiation (5.5 or 6.5 Gy). After 8 days growth under the sub-renal capsule (SRC) of IS mice, the tumor volume increased 40-fold on the average, and histological and cytological examination showed that the growth consisted almost entirely of viable tumor cells. Marked tumor growth in IS mice also was observed after intraperitoneal implantation of fibrin clots containing BRO cells. SRC implantation of encapsulated BRO cells in pre-irradiated mice offers a practical and reproducible method for evaluating the growth of human tumors in vivo.

[Cytological diagnosis of epithelial dysplasias].

The attempt is undertaken to determine the possibilities of the dysplasia cytological diagnosis taking as an example the gynecological smears, smears-prints of the gastrobiopsies and mammary gland punctures. The difficulties are noted with which the cytologist is faced. The correctness of the cytological diagnosis "epithelial proliferation with atypia" and the possibilities of using the term "severe dysplasia" in the pronounced epithelial cells alterations, signs of their disordered differentiation is pointed out.

[Relationship between androgen and estrogen receptors and clinico-morphological characteristics of prostatic cancer].

The paper presents the results of studies on cytoplasmic receptors of androgens (AR) and estrogens (ER) in tumors of 50 patients with prostate carcinoma with respect to age, histological structure and degree of tumor differentiation, and stage of the disease. The study showed the majority of tumors in patients not previously treated with estrogens to contain one or both types of receptors. In prostate carcinoma AR were found more frequently and both receptors were present twice as frequently in elderly as compared to senile patients. In the latter, adenocarcinomas containing only ER were predominant. AR could be detected more frequently in highly differentiated than in poorly differentiated tumors. ER did not correlate with the histological structure and degree of differentiation of the tumor. A negative correlation was observed between the stage of the tumor progression and the presence of AR in prostate carcinoma. AR and ER were seldom found in tumors of the patients treated with estrogens for a long time. Among 13 patients who died from advanced tumor, no AR were found in 12 tumors, both receptors were present in 1 tumor, and ER alone in 5 tumors.

[Standardization of the cytological conclusions in the diagnosis of cancer of the lung, stomach, breast and thyroid gland].

Based on a correlation of the results of cytological and histological assays in 1213 patients, the authors have analysed the correct and erroneous verifications of the cancer pattern according to cytological preparations. Under consideration are the possibilities and limitations of the cytological verification of different histological patterns and degree of differentiation of cancer of the lung, stomach, breast and thyroid. Standard cytological conclusions in accordance with the suggested cytological classifications of cancer of these organs are discussed.

Testing prospective anticancer drugs against human tumors using simple in vivo models.

The activities of established and experimental antitumor drugs were tested against the BRO and MeWo human melanomas transplanted in the subrenal capsule of phenotypically immunocompetent (CBA x C57BL/6)F1 mice. Immunosuppression was achieved with preliminary whole-body radiation, and cytological examination showed that the tumors of untreated mice consisted largely of viable tumor cells. Several drugs tested showed moderate activity against one or both tumors. The system described provides a basis for testing anticancer agents against a panel of human melanomas implanted in immunocompetent mice.

[Feasibility of cytologic diagnosis of bone tumors].

Main advantages of the cytological method are demonstrated: possibilities of obtaining material from areas which are hardly accessible for open biopsy, investigation of bone tumor before or during the operation, etc. Detailed biological characteristics of tumor cells by means of DNA-flow cytometry, roentgenological and clinical data help to establish correctly a morphological variant of bone tumor and thus to choose an adequate therapeutical method.

[Malignant mesodermal (Mullerian) mixed tumor of the ovary: histologic, immunohistochemical and cytologic study].

A rare case of aggressive ovarian tumor in a 38-year-old female is described. Cytological diagnosis of the intraoperative smears was difficult because of the presence of the epithelial and non-epithelial components. The latter consisted of two types: spindle cells and roundish undifferentiated cells with multinuclear forms. Histologically, it was a malignant mesodermal (Mullerian) mixed tumor. Round mesenchymal cells expressed desmin and vimentin while spindle cells expressed myoglobin. Non-epithelial component was verified as leiomyosarcoma and rhabdomyosarcoma. Cells of the epithelial component expressed cytokeratins and epithelial membrane antigen.
