Computed tomographic evaluation of pineal calcification.

A prospective study to ascertain the incidence of normally calcified pineal gland, was carried out in 1000 consecutive patients from different parts of Uttar Pradesh (India), undergoing cranial computed tomography for reasons other than a pineal or parapineal pathology. A total of 167 (16.70%) patients were found to have calcified pineals. Of these 128 were males and 39 females. The incidence rose from 1.16 per cent in the first decade to 31.88 per cent above the age of 50 yr. The percentage incidence of normal pineal calcification was lower than that seen in the Western population. No significant difference was found between men and women in any age group. Although calcification appeared as early as the first decade, this percentage was significantly lower than in the higher age groups. Significantly higher incidence rates were seen in the second decade, third decade and sixth decade onwards.

Synthesis and pharmacological studies of some (1,4)-naphthoquinono[3,2-c]-1H-pyrazoles, 2-substituted amino-1,4-naphthoquinones, and related compounds.

Series of (1,4)-Naphthoquinono(3,2-c)-1H-pyrazoles and 2-substituted amino-1,4-naphthoquinones have been synthesised and studied for their possible anticancer activity (animal tumours, Walker 256 carcinosarcoma), Influenza RNA transcriptase activity, antibiotic activity (C. neoformans, T. mentagraphytes, M. canis, A. niger, and C. albicans).

Antineoplastic Agents

Colour vision deficiency among two populations of Chamars, a scheduled caste population of Uttar Pradesh (India).

On n = 320 nonrelated Kureel Chamars (160 males, 160 females) from Lucknow and neighbouring villages and n = 314 nonrelated Jaiswar Chamars (160 males, 154 females) from Jaunpur the frequency of colourvision deficiency was examined. In the Kureel Chamars the frequency of deuteranopia comes to a total of 1.25% (males: 25%, females: 0.0%), in the Jaiswar Chamars to a total of 1.91% (males: 3.13%, females: 0.65%). Protanopes were only found in the Kureel Chamars (0.63%; males: 1.25%, females: 0.0%). These observations are discussed and compared with those obtained on other Indian populations.

Color Vision Defects

A serological study among two endogamous groups of chamars.

On a sample of n = 320 unrelated Kureel Chamars (Lucknow district) and n = 314 unrelated Jaiswar Chamars (Jaunpur district) ABO- and Rh(D)-typings have been carried out. The two Chamar groups occupy the lowest position in caste hierarchy. In this paper the question is examined, whether the geographical fission of the both Chamar groups, followed by isolation, has had genetical effects.
