Virulent Naegleria fowleri in indoor swimming pool.

Naegleria fowleri was isolated from water during a hygienic inspection of a swimming pool in December 1977. This swimming pool was identified as a source of the infectious agent in the years 1962-1965, when a large outbreak of primary amoebic meningoencephalitis (PAME) occurred. First two strains of N. fowleri, pathogenic for white mice after intracerebral and intranasal inoculation, were isolated from water of outlet troughs, additional strains were then isolated from various places; particularly from a cavity in the damaged wall of the pool. The incubation temperature did not inhibit a simultaneous growth of amoebae of the genera Acanthamoeba, Flabellula, Hartmannella and Vahlkampfia in the primocultures. Epidemiological investigations did not reveal any new case of PAME in relation with the occurrence of pathogenic N. fowleri in the swimming pool.

The occurrence of amphizoic Amebae in domestic animals.

Random examination of domestic animals revealed the frequent presence of free-living amebae in their bodies. In diseased or dead cows, dogs, pigs, rabbits, pigeons, and turkeys 15 strains of amebae were found, belonging to the genera Acanthamoeba (A. polyphaga), Hartmannella (H. vermiformis), and Vahlkampfia (V. avara, V. enterica, V. inornata). They were usually accompanied by other infectious agents in different parts of the host bodies. Pathogenicity of 3 isolates could not be demonstrated by inoculation of laboratory animals. Some features of the isolates differed from those previously known for members of these genera. These strains may be considered amphizoic amebae according to Page (1974).

[Observation on the antigenic affinity of Leptospira and Brucella in the serological examination of cattle].

36,9% bovine serums which showed a non-specific reaction in examination for brucellosis had titre greater than or equal to 1:400 leptospirosis agglutinins. 15.1% of the serums showed a positive reaction (greater than 1:800), mostly those against L. sejroe and L. grippotyphosa. The cross reactions, found in individual cases within up to 39 days since the first reaction to brucellosis in cattle may signalize early Leptospira infections.

[Follow-up of occurrence of protozoa in the nasal cavity of pigs in relation to atrophic rhinitis].

Ninety-five pigs, twelve suffering from atrophic rhinitis, were examined for the presence of protozoans in their nasal cavity. Tritrichomonas suis was isolated only in a single case in a diseased boar representing 1.09% of the set. Amoebae of the Vahlkampfia genus were detected in two pigs (2.1%). The axenic cultures of the two protozoans isolated from the pigs were not pathogenic to laboratory animals. No etiological relation of Tritochomonas suis to atrophic rhinitis was demonstrated.

The effects of some factors on the growth and morphology of Naegleria sp. and three strains of the genus Acanthamoeba.

The effects of various biophysical and chemical factors on the cytology of vegetative stages of Naegleria sp., Vitek strain, Acanthamoeba culbertsoni, Acanthamoeba castellanii, Neff strain and Acanthamoeba polyphaga, No. 1289, were studied. The amoebae were cultured in a liquid medium under axenic conditions. The optimum temperature was 37 degrees C for pathogenic strains of Naegleria sp. and Acanthamoeba culbertsoni and 20 degrees C for A. castellanii. No changes were observed in the growth of A. polyphaga at the temperatures 20 degrees and 37 degrees C. The strains investigated grew at pH values of 5.6 to 7.7 using Soerensen's buffer. At the limit values the growth was inhibited and the morphology of cells was markedly changed. All of the four strains grew still at pH 8.4 kept by NaHCO3. A. polyphaga grew at partial anaerobiosis. The three tested strains of the genus Acanthamoeba grew in liquid axenic medium with 0.89% NaCl. The growth of Naegleria sp., Vitek was inhibited already at 0.2% concentration of this salt. The addition of 3 X 10(-2) m KCl to the culture medium had a harmful effect on the growth and morphology of three tested strains, except A. polyphaga. In the culture medium containing 2 X 10(-3) m CaCl2 the encystment of both pathogenic strains was stimulated. The cytological changes under experimental conditions were manifested by atypical movement of trophozoits and their intracellular structure.

[Amebas of the Limax group in various species of farm and domestic animals].

Fourteen strains of amoebae of the Limax group were isolated by random selection in five species of farm and domestic animals. The amoebae were captured in the respiratory and digestive tracts and in sex organs. According to the systematic classification, the isolates belong to the following genera: Acanthamoeba, Hartmannella, and Vahlkampfia. Their temperature optimum was 37 degrees C. The trial to demonstrate a pathogenetic character of the representative of individual genera on laboratory animals gave a negative result.

[Demodex suis].

There is a description of macroscopic changes in the subcutaneous layers in pigs caused by Demodex suis. The paper presents the biometrical values of individual stages of the development of the parasite.
