Intestinal parasites: a study of human appendices.

Histological sections of 414 appendices were examined parasitologically. Enterobius vermicularis was found in 8.7%, eggs of Ascaris lumbricoides in 0.5%, trophozites of Dientamoeba fragilis in 4.8%, Endolimax nana in 2.2%, Entamoeba coli in 1% and cysts of Giardia intestinalis in 1.9% of cases. Appendicopathies associated with Enterobius were most frequent in the age group from 6 to 10 years (24.3%) and from 21 to 25 years (12.2%). Patients older than 15 years were practically women only. Dientamoeba was most frequent in the age group from 11 to 15 years (11.3%). In women D. fragilis was three times more frequent than in men. The coincidence of D. fragilis and E. vermicularis infections was 50%. No interactions were seen between the protozoans in the contents of the appendix and its mucous membrane. Statistical evaluation indicates possible etiologic role of E. vermicularis in the occurrence of acute appendicities. D. fragilis appears to be the most common intestinal protozoan parasite in Bohemia.

The possible mutagenic effect of the occupation of TV announcer.

In a group of TV announcers, a significant increase in the number of classical aberrations was detected in peripheral blood: 7.5 +/- 3.477% in comparison with 3 control groups (A - 7 healthy women matched for sex, age and place of residence, B - 9 members of TV technical staff, C - 9 actors and actresses) with a mean aberration level of 2.96 +/- 1.136. SCE numbers were not increased in the TV announcers compared to controls. An increased frequency of reproduction failure has also been noticed in TV announcers (females). A decrease in the level of aberrant cells was noticed when the announcer had been on holiday, although this was not statistically significant. The possible mutagens in the working environment of TV announcers are discussed; there is a suspicion that azodyes, present in cosmetics or other chemicals, may be the mutagenic factor.

Contribution to the problem of the so-called nonpathogenic amoebae in the intestine of man.

Among 10,418 patients of a Prague hospital, a plain infection with intestinal parasitic protozoans was identified in 1,319 persons (12.7%). Of these, 3.5% were infested with Giardia intestinalis, 0.3% with Entamoeba histolytica forma minuta, 5.7% with Endolimax nana. We evaluated the frequency of findings of protozoans in various clinical diagnoses. A statistically significant increase in frequency was recorded for E. nana in diagnoses of eosinophilia, giardiasis, amoebiasis and helminthiasis. A slight increase above the average was found for Entamoeba coli in diagnoses of giardiasis and helminthiasis. Most cases of infection with Entamoeba histolytica were associated with a stay abroad. No increase in the frequency of these protozoans was recorded for patients with diarrhea. An analysis of the results indicated that a nonpathogenic amoeba might participate in the origin of intestinal disorders in man.

The effect of lactation on thyroid activity of women.

The study comprised 12 lactating (L) women, 26 women who interruped the lactating during study (IL) and 6 women failing to lactate (NL). All women gave birth to normal fullterm infants after uneventfull pregnancy and vaginal delivery. Sampling was done during the 2nd day and 10th week after parturition. Lactating women showed more pronounced decrease of thyroxine, decreased thyroxine: triiodothyronine ratio and increased TSH level during the 10th week after parturition in comparison to IL group. The women on NL group showed similar changes as L women, but without increased level of TSH in comparison to IL ones. Results suggest the effect of lactation on the thyroid activity. This effect could be due to the loss of iodine and thyroid hormones to the milk.
