[Energy and plastic metabolism of the heart muscle in rabbits undergoing thyroid irradiation with decimeter waves].

The functional state of myocardial mitochondria, the glycogen and nucleic acid contents in myocardium, and morphometry of structural elements of cardiomyocytes and myocardial capillary network were investigated in order to select the optimal regimen of decimeter wave exposures with power density of 10, 120 and 240 mW/cm2 on the area of thyroid gland. It was shown that the thyroid gland exposure to decimeter waves at these intensities resulted in functional shifts in energy and plastic processes in myocardium and capillary blood supply. These changes increased to a considerable extent as the intensity of exposure was increasing and reached the maximum at power density of 240 mW/cm2 but event at this intensity there was not found the injurious effect of decimeter waves on the myocardium.

[Immunobiological effect of bitemporal exposure of rabbits to microwaves].

The immunobiological effect of electromagnetic microwaves applied to parietotemporal area was studied. It was shown that the exposure of parietotemporal area to microwaves produced an immunodepressive effect manifested in the decreased number of natural (background) antibody-forming cells. The exposure of parietotemporal area to microwaves was accompanied by glucocorticoid function stimulation in the adrenal cortex and thyroid function depression.

[Immunobiological effects of a decimeter-range electromagnetic field in its exposure over the area of the thyroid gland].

The immunological effect caused by the influence of the local action of the ultrahigh frequency (UHF) electromagnetic field on the projection zone of the thyroid gland was studied. The action of UHF waves shown to be capable of producing both immunostimulating and immunosuppressing effects; their manifestation depended on the period of immunogenesis, affected by the action of UHF waves. The synthesis of nonspecific immunoglobulins showed greater resistance to the suppressive action of UHF waves than the synthesis of specific immunoglobulins, i.e. antibodies. The activation of the thyroid gland under the influence of UHF waves occurred before the immunostimulating effect was observed.

[Extracellular fluid and total potassium content in obesity patients].

The content of extracellular fluid and total potassium was studied by total-body radiometry with 82Br and according to 40K in 162 females aged 41 to 55 years suffering from obesity. It was established that in patients with obesity the volume of extracellular tissue, in per cent, and the amount of total potassium, in gramms and millieequivalent per unit of actual body mass, were reduced. An increase in the content of extracellular fluid and a decrease in the level of total potassium in obese patients with circulatory insufficiency may be revealed only when the real content of extracellular fluid and the total potassium are stimated in relation to the unit of body surface. In obese patients with no signs of circulatory insufficiency these relative values hardly differ from the control values.
