[Life style of cancer patients in older age groups following treatment (experimental sociological study)].

Mode of life was studied in 947 old-age cancer patients radically treated for tumors of major localizations. After treatment 28.2% resumed work and 28.4% worked for over 5 years taking an active part in social life. Family relations were good in 83.9% of cases; the nature of their leisure activities somewhat changed as a result of taking less physical exercise. 44.2% continued to show a closed group attitude and to care about each other for a long time.

Geographical distribution of lung cancer in the USSR.

During recent years medico-geographical studies on lung cancer in the USSR have been intensified. The results of these studies are reflected in works on the geographical distribution of lung cancer and on the influence of unfavourable natural-economic factors upon lung cancer incidence. The steady increase in lung cancer morbidity and mortality throughout the world is one of the urgent problems of today. Numerous studies have been carried out, and these have identified several aetiological factors which play a certain role in lung cancer development (smoking, occupational hazards, air pollution by industry and traffic). These studies have shown lung cancer to be one of the cancers most closely associated with environmental conditions. Lung cancer is considered to be a disease of the male population inhabiting highly industrialized cities and countries. However, lung cancer incidence has also been increasing recently in the female population of different countries. (V. Merabishvili, G. Tserkovny, 1981) Different levels of morbidity and mortality from lung cancer throughout the world make it necessary to undertake comprehensive studies on the complicated and ever-changing relations between the health status of the population and the effect of natural and economic factors.

Geographical distribution of breast cancer in the USSR.

This work presents statistical data on breast cancer incidence in the population of the USSR and the Union republics (1970-1980). Mortality rates for the population are also presented, together with trends in compilation of breast cancer patient contingents. The study was based on summarized data on breast cancer incidence and patient follow-up carried out by oncological institutions.

[Current trends in the treatment of breast cancer].

Main trends in treatment of breast cancer patients are reviewed. Application of "inadequate" methods, such as radiation therapy or chemo-hormonotherapy alone, dropped from 16.2% in 1970 to 12.5% in 1977. This tendency is matched by an increasing application of combination therapy including remote gamma-therapy and megavolt radiation therapy (17.7% in 1970 v. 29.0% in 1977). Combination therapy including irradiation, surgery and chemo-and/or hormonotherapy is on upgrade; it was given to 31.2% of breast cancer patients in 1977.

Breast Neoplasms↗

[Cervical cancer morbidity and mortality in the USSR].

Some tendencies in the kinetics of the morbidity and mortality rate among the USSR population due to malignant neoplasms of the uterine cervix have been studied for the period of 1970-1977. The age-sex adjusted indices of the morbidity rate are reported as well as the data on the cohorts of women kept under a dispensary control. Some reduction was noted in the morbidity and mortality rate due to cervical cancer among the female population of the USSR and Union Republics.
