The faculty work plan and appraisal: its potential for faculty role development.

This exploratory study was designed to begin analysis on the "Faculty Work Plan" and its potential for faculty role development in a university setting. The specific goals were: (1) to identify the degree of congruence between faculty work plans and the school goals; and (2) to determine the relationship between faculty work plan/school goal congruence, faculty productivity, potency, and job satisfaction. The sample was composed of 26 respondents, 26 to 50 years old, from a pool of 48 full-time faculty members affiliated with a school of nursing in a university setting. Likert-type rating scores were used to measure Faculty Work Plan-School Goal Congruence (FWP-SG), job satisfaction, productivity, and potency. Data analyses were focused on frequency distribution, group means, and Pearson Correlation Coefficients on selected pairs of variables. Interesting findings were revealed. A strong relationship was found between FWP-SG congruence and faculty productivity (r = .85; p = .000) and potency (r = .84; p = .000). Several recommendations were suggested.

Impact of the WIC program on the iron status of infants.

The WIC Program (Special Supplemental Food Program for Women, Infants and Children) was initiated in the early 1970s to improve the nutritional status of pregnant women, lactating women, and children from birth to 5 years of age who were at risk for nutritionally related health problems. Better hematologic status of a group of preschool-aged infants who were enrolled in the WIC Program from birth, as compared with another group of similar age and socioeconomic status from the pre-WIC Program era, suggests that participation in the WIC Program will help limit the development of iron depletion or iron deficiency anemia in young children, an important consideration in view of the deleterious hematologic and nonhematologic effects that have been attributed to those conditions.

Transverse myelitis associated with Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection.

A case of acute transverse myelitis associated with respiratory infection by Mycoplasma pneumoniae is described. Circulating antibodies to myelin were detected suggesting that mycoplasma related neurological damage is mediated by producing an immunological myelopathy.

Human milk in the management of protracted diarrhoea of infancy.

Eleven of 13 children with the protracted diarrhoea syndrome of infancy were successfully treated with human milk. All the infants, who were severely malnourished, had deteriorated while fed on a wide range of highly modified formulas. Seven infants responded promptly with cessation of weight loss and diarrhoea; in four others, human milk was used to re-establish oral nutrition after a period of intravenous nutrition when all other measures had failed. Two children did not respond to human milk. Despite its high lactose content, human milk has nutritional and immunological properties that may reverse many of the factors thought to cause the protracted diarrhoea syndrome, and we conclude that it has an important role in management of this syndrome and may obviate the need for intravenous nutrition as a life saving measure.

Suppression of NK-mediated natural resistance by interferon treatment of murine lymphomas.

The observation that interferon (IFN) can suppress the NK lytic sensitivity of murine lymphomas in vitro led us to examine the consequences of this treatment on tumor behavior in vivo. Preincubation in IFN suppressed natural resistance to two lymphomas in syngeneic DBA/2 and semisyngeneic BDF1 mice in a dose-dependent manner, measured by the retention of (131I)dUrd-labeled tumor. Poly I:C enhancement of NK-mediated natural resistance in the lung, liver, and peritoneal cavity was also abolished by IFN pretreatment. IFN was, however, ineffective in altering the elimination of the IFN-resistant L1210R lymphoma when compared to its IFN-sensitive variant, L1210S. In DBA/2 mice that were made NK-deficient by treatment with cyclophosphamide or rabbit anti-asialo GM1 antiserum, or in congenitally NK-deficient bg/bg strain mice, IFN-treated tumor and control tumor were rejected equally well. This indicated that the effects of IFN were dependent on the presence of NK cells in these mice, and suggests that the IFN suppressed the sensitivity of the lymphomas to NK cell-mediated host resistance.

Computed tomographic findings in suburothelial hemorrhage.

Retroperitoneal hemorrhage with associated intramural hemorrhage into the renal pelvis and proximal ureter is a well documented complication of coagulation defects. The urographic characteristics of this condition have been well documented by several authors [1-4], but to our knowledge the computed tomographic (CT) findings in patients with this condition have not been reported previously. We describe the CT findings in 2 such cases; one related to thrombocytopenia in leukemia, and the other to anticoagulant therapy in a patient with Budd-Chiari syndrome.
