[Variants in the course of chronic alcoholic gastritis].

Functional and structural changes in the stomach, vegetative tone, microcirculation, histamine metabolism were studied in 136 male alcoholics. The results allowed the authors to distinguish clinico-pathogenetic variants of chronic alcoholic gastritis which can be used for objective evaluation of the disease severity and serve basis for design of adequate therapy at different stages of the disease progression.

[ECG changes in alcoholic patients at rest and during physical exertion].

Electrocardiograms were recorded at rest and during the step-test in 231 alcoholic patients and 115 clinically normal males. In alcoholic patients, the most common ECG changes recorded at rest were shortened PQ interval, lengthened QT, rhythm and conductivity disorders, flattened P waves, whereas typical exercise-associated changes were elevated systolic parameters. As alcoholism progressed, there was an obvious tendency to increased incidence of conductivity disorders, flattened P waves and elevated systolic values during exercise. Within 1.5-2 months of anti-alcoholic treatment, resting electrocardiograms of alcoholic patients begin to show slower heart rate, longer PQ, more normal QT intervals, while rhythm and conductivity disorders do not respond rapidly, nor does QT duration during exercise.

[Microcirculation in alcoholics].

Conjunctival biomicroscopy was used to examine microcirculation in 221 males suffering from alcoholism. The control group consisted of 73 practically healthy males. Marked perivascular, vascular, and intravascular changes were revealed in the terminal blood flow system in all the alcoholics; these changes were found to progress, as the disease became graver. After 1.5- to 2-month antialcoholic treatment a distinct improvement of only perivascular disturbances was noted. Quantitative assessment of the microcirculation using the conjunctival indices can be taken for an additional criterion of diagnosis and specification of the alcoholism stage.
