Responses of the cardio-vascular system and bioenergetic metabolism were studied in the heart tissue in apnoea in naturally adapted to diving musk-rats and unadapted rats and mice. A sharp bradycardia was shown to develop in former animals in arresting a breathing as well an increase in the neutrophils contents in the blood. The data obtained suggest that release of the necessary oxygen and antiradical defence functions can be related to the catalase activity.
Pinealectomy was shown to suppress the milk ejection reflex and increase the luteinizing hormone secretion in lactating rats. Suckling caused the same type changes of prolactin though at a lower level, in these rats. The data obtained suggest that the pineal gland together with the oxytocinergic system are involved in complex mechanisms of neurohumoral regulation of the lactogenic and gonadotropic hormones secretion during lactation.
Spontaneous and evoked biopotentials were recorded on the mammary gland surface in goats. The biopotentials appear in the course of secretion during milk ejection as well as under electrical, mechanical and hormonal actions. They might be considered as adequate indices of secretion and ejection processes in the mammary gland.

In mammary explants of lactating mice, changes in the intensity of chemiluminescence (CL) were observed after the addition to the incubation medium of hormones and mediators that are involved in the regulation of secretion: oxytocin, acetylcholine, epinephrine and norepinephrine. A 15-min period of treatment with oxytocin, epinephrine or norepinephrine changed the level of thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARS). Two mammary explants, one of which was treated with oxytocin, acetylcholine, epinephrine or norepinephrine, were found to interact even when separated by a quartz glass wall. Analysis of the level of TBARS formation in these two explants showed that the observed interactions might be connected with light emission resulting from lipid peroxidation (LP) processes. The possible role of LP and low-level CL in the regulation of mammary gland secretion is discussed.

By means of scanning microscopy the relief of luminal surface of endotheliocytes, lining microvessels of various parts of the brain in the Pusa sibirica, Phoca vitulina and Delphinapterus leucas have been studied. Specialized formations of the cellular surface--various processes, projections, toruli have been revealed; their character in various parts of the brain in diving animals is determined by the blood stream conditions and their different sensitivity to oxygen deficiency during diving. The peculiarities, revealed in the structure of the cerebral vessels intima, are considered as one manifestations of the adaptive properties in the organism of diving animals, which had been developed in them during the process of a long evolution, while they adapted to the aquatic environment.
The sulci and gyri of the neocortex, as well as cyto-, synaptoarchitectonics and neuronal composition of the sensomotor (brain area) have been studied in the Baikal ringed seal. The structure of the sulci and gyri have been found to be similar to that in carnivores. The following specific features have been revealed in the brain of this endemic species: a thick layer I, presence of giant pyramidal cells in the layer III, large mitochondria in the presynaptic parts and dendrites. The results obtained are discussed concerning adaptation to semiaqueous way of life and to diving.

Distribution of Ca2+ ions, precipitated by means of pyroantimonate potassium, has been investigated electron microscopically in secretory cells of the mammary gland of lactating white mice. In the glandular cells, that are at the state of inhibition of secretory activity, the cytochemical reaction product is localized on the internal side of the basal, lateral and apical parts of the plasmolemma, in mitochondrial matrix, in cisterns and in the Golgi complex vesicles, in the nuclear areas, occupied by euchromatin. Oxytocin effect produces a certain complex of ultrastructural changes in the cell accompanied by redistribution of Ca2+ ions. Amount of precipitate in mitochondria decreases. It is revealed in the lumen of dilated canals of the granular endoplasmic reticulum, in the zone of decondensated nuclear chromatin, in the Golgi complex vesicles. The vesicles become larger and fuse with each other. The changes mentioned demonstrate increased synthetic and transport processes, occurring in the glandular epithelium of the mammary gland after oxytocin effect.

Using a mathematical model which describes the O2, transport in the alveolar cell of the mammary gland, the distribution of pO2 levels during two stages of the secretory cycle, was calculated. At the initial stage, the typical feature of which is the increased blood flow and O2 consumption, pO2 in the secretory tissue varied from 3 to 30 torr (average 9.9 torr). At the later stage of the secretory cycle characterized by the decreased blood flow and O2 consumption, pO2 levels in the secretory tissue were within the limits of 40--60 torr (average 48.9 torr). The increase of blood flow usually observed at the initial stage of the secretory cycle seems to supply tissues with the necessary amount of O2 even if the capillarization of the alveoli is minimal.
In lactating albino mice, the blood flow rate and oxygen consumption in mammary tissues varied with a period of 45--50 min. The maximal values were reached at the initial stage of the secretory cycle: oxygen consumption 9.7 +/- 2.5 ml O2/100 g.min, and blood flow 94.3 +/- 21.2 ml/100 g.min. The minimal values of oxygen consumption and blood flow ere recorded on the 30--35th min of the secretory cycle and were 1.2 +/- 0.4 ml O2/100 g.min and 16.2 +/- 5.3 ml/100 g.min, respectively. Oxygen consumption by the secretory cells at the beginning of the secretory cycle averaged 19.3 +/- 5.2 ml 92/100 g.min, and within 30--35 min--3.3 +/- 1.1 ml O2/100 g.min. The linear relations between the intensity of blood flow and oxygen consumption in the mammary gland were revealed.
