[Antigenic characteristics of standard strains of Providencia rettgeri (O- and H-antigens)].

Additions and changes have been introduced into the existing antigenic diagnostic scheme of P. rettgeri on the basis of the study of the antigenic structure of standard strains from foreign collections: new, formerly unknown varieties of somatic and flagellar antigens (O35, O36, H27, H28) have been discovered, the complex of antigenic factors for H-antigens 7, 10, 23, 27 has been discovered. Strains 958 (36 : 28) and 979 (16 : 27a, 23b, 2a), previously classified with the genus Morganella, have been identified by O- and H-antigens.

[Serological passage of bacteria of the genus Providencia isolated from patients with wound, urological and intestinal infections].

A total of 395 Providencia strains isolated from patients and the environment were studied. Their differentiation by O and H antigens revealed that these strains belonged to 36 serological groups and contained 26 varieties of the flagellar antigen. In accordance with the combinations of O and H antigens, 59 serological variants were found among the Providencia strains. 33 new, formerly unknown serovars and 2 flagellar antigens were added to the existing antigenic and diagnostic scheme of Providencia. Most of the strains isolated from patients with surgical complications and burns were found to belong to P. stuartii, serovars O44: H4 and O4: H4, and from patients with acute intestinal diseases, to P. alcalifaciens, serovars O2: H26 and O50: H33.

[Antigenic relations between enteropathogenic Escherichia O151:K, Citrobacter and Hafnia].

The strains isolated from acute dysentery patients and convalescents and identified as E. coli O151:K--were studied. Diagnostic errors due to inexact genus determination were revealed, and the isolated strains were found to belong to Citrobacter and Hafnia. The main biochemical differences allowing to differentiate E. coli O151:K--from these two genera were established. The study also showed the necessity of some tests, such as the tests for citrate assimilation in Simmons' medium and sodium malonate assimilation, the determination of indole production, the determination of differences in the methyl red and Voges--Proskauer reactions at different temperatures. The poor unilateral antigenic relationship of the strains under study, agglutinating with antiserum to E. coli O151, Citrobacter O1 and O14 and Hafnia C18 was revealed.

[Serotyping of bacteria of the genus Providencia using the indirect hemagglutination test and the indirect hemagglutination inhibition test].

The experiments with the collection of strains and diagnostic sera available in the USSR confirmed the data contained in the literature on the good prospects of using the indirect hemagglutination test for the serotyping of bacteria belonging to the genus Providencia. Certain differences were observed in cross reactions, revealed by the indirect hemagglutination test and by agglutination: the interrelations of serogroups O14 and O25, O23 and O25, O23 and O29, O29 and O45, O37 and O49, determined by means of the indirect hemagglutination test, could not be detected in the same sera by the slide and tube agglutination tests. For the first time the usefulness of aqueous-saline extracts of agar cultures in the indirect hemagglutination inhibition test to specify more precisely the interrelations between individual bacterial serogroups of the genus Providencia has been shown.

[Monosaccharide composition of the lipopolysaccharides of bacteria of the genus Citrobacter].

The authors studied antigens obtained by Grasset's method from 13 strains of Citrobacter of the International collection. The strains possessed O- and H-antigens whose behaviur in the electric field differed. All the strains under study were divided into two groups (by the number of serologically-active components of their O-antigens); representatives of the second group had no cathode O-antigen component. Chemical composition of specific lipopolysaccharides (LPS) obtained by Westphal's method was determined. Fourteen different sugars were revealed. The strains under study were referred to the known chemotypes. Strain 16/52 (8a, 8c) was for the first time studied in respect to the monosaccharide composition of specific LPS, and was referred to chemotype designated as CC-L.

[Flagellar antigens of E. coli serologically interrlelated to H40, 41 and H41, 42, 43 flagellar antigens of Citrobacter. New H-antigeny E. coli i Citrobacter].

The authors confirmed the reference of the test strains H13 (P6c) and H22 (A231a) of the international collection of E. coli to Citrobacter; their antigenic formula was established. As shown, strains P6c possessed a variety of the H-antigen which was not described in Citrobacter earlier, designated as H41a, 97. Three types of flagellar antigens characterized by the presence of an interrelationship with the partial factor H41 of the flagellar Citrobacter antigens were revealed in E. coli; the partial composition of H-antigenic components common for E. coli and Citrobacter was studied. Two of three new varieties of the E. coli H-antigen revealed was characterized by a cross correlation and a relation to the standard H19 E. coli antigen. The strain with the third variety of the H-antigen was capable of forming the H-antigenic mutants which acquired the antigenic component identical to the standard H16 E. coli antigen. E. coli strain is recommended for the replacement of the strain P6c in the International collection of E. coli.

[Characteristics of strains of Citrobacter 037 (5396/38) isolated from guinea pigs in a gnotobiologic experiment].

No changes in the principal biochemical properties characteristic of the given genus occurred in a gnotobiological experiment of passing Citrobacter bacteria through microbe free and exmicrobe-free animals. Of 28 strains of this genus isolated in the course of investigation two strains lost their arginine-decarboxylase activity. In the cultures studied the quantitative content of the Vi-antigen had a tendency to reduction in comparison with the initial culture used for the association. some of the strains studied had one more common antigen with typhoid bacilli (strain Ty2-4446) along with theknown cross by the Vi-antigen. Bacteria of the Enterobacter and Excherichia genus isolated after the conventionalization had common antigens with typhoid bacilli (Ty2-4446).
