The effects of various kinds of sparsely-ionizing radiation on total cell RNA and preribosomal nuclear RNA of Novikoff hepatoma ascites cells after in vivo labelling.

The effects of 300 kV X-rays, 60Co gamma-rays, 43 MV X-rays and 43 MeV electrons on total cell RNA and 45 S pre-r RNA were investigated in Novikoff Hepatoma ascites cells. Six hours after local irradiation of the animals with 600 rad, the tumour cells were labelled in vivo for 30 and 60 min. The specific activities of high-molecular-weight RNA were influenced differently. This may be due to divergent effects of the applied radiation qualities at the level of transcription and transformation (processing). In addition, these radiation effects are mediated by the adrenal glands in a rather complex manner. Therefore, the results presented in this study support the suggestion that an in vivo labelling system is unsuitable for the evaluation of quantitative radiation effects on RNA.

The diagnostic value of sialography and scintigraphy in salivary gland diseases.

The diagnostic value of sialographic and scintigraphic investigations was compared in 169 patients. In this group were 75 inflammatory diseases and 49 benign and malignant tumours. Sialograms and scintigrams were examined by different physicians who had no knowledge of the clinical data of the patients. The scintigraphic diagnosis was considered correct if any abnormal finding was noted. The sialographic diagnosis was considered correct if the actual disease was diagnosed. In spite of the less stringent requirements for a correct scintigraphic diagnosis the sialographic technique was found to be superior. Radioactivity uptake curves over the salivary glands did not improve the scintigraphic diagnostic accuracy.

In vitro determination of unbound and total iron-binding capacity in serum by radioiron using a new ion exchange strip.

A simplified method for the in vitro determination of TIBC and UIBC in serum using 59Fe was subjected to quality control in the laboratory and clinically studied in duplicate determinations of 185 sera of an unselected patient population. The data obtained were investigated by statistical means (regression, correlation, variance analysis). The precision of the method was evaluated step by step. The results indicate that the radiochemical determination of TIBC values is equivalent to the "indirect" one (UIBC + SI) as far as accuracy is concerned. Advantages of the radiochemical method are discussed.

[Dose-time effects of competitive displacement of radiopertechnetate by sodium perchlorate following oral and intravenous administration].

The effect of various doses of sodium perchlorate in several dose fractions on the extent and the time scale of displacement of radiopertechnetate, in dependence on application mode, was studied. An intravenous dose of 50 mg perchlorate was in respect of competitive suppression of organs actively concentrating pertechnetate as effective as intravenous 1000 mg ClO-4- simultaneously or 1000 mg orally 30 min before the injection of radiopertechnetate. An intravenous injection of perchlorate given later also produces a complete and immediately beginning depletion of pertechnetate already accumulated in the thyroid, within a period of 195 min after 99m-TcO-4-injection with a corresponding increase in blood levels. 20 mg result in incomplete depletion which becomes complete after a second additional dose. The intravenous application of perchlorate offers advantages in clinical use.
