Rhythmic reproduction, arousal, and chosen time.

The relationship between rhythmic reproduction of four stimulus frequencies (44, 80, 126, 200 beats a minute), chosen time, and arousal was studied with 32 subjects of both sexes. The following findings emerged: at the frequency of 44, the group is divided into equal numbers of subjects who either accelerate or slow down; a frequency of 80 induces a general slowing down and a frequency of 200 a general acceleration. Also, the maximum absolute error occurred at a frequency of 200 and the minimum, at the frequency of 80. With regard to chosen time, subjects who tended to accelerate showed a tendency to choose faster rhythms. With regard to level of arousal, the highest frequency was associated with a faster reproduction during relaxed wakefulness and a slower reproduction at the higher and lower activation levels; a state of reduced alertness also produced slowing down at a frequency of 126 and a state of relaxed wakefulness, an acceleration at a frequency of 44.

Cerebral dominance and muscle tone at rest.

This study examined some aspects of the relationship between muscle tone at rest and cerebral dominance. Right and left EMG recordings of sternocleidomastoid, trapezium, orbicularis oculi, and frontalis muscles were taken on 40 female subjects between 19 and 30 yr. of age. Analysis of total score for right and left muscles gave three groups: right-dominant subjects with higher myographic score on the right (42.5%), left-dominant subjects with higher myographic score on the left (52.5%), and non-dominant subjects with no difference between right and left myographic score (5%). Moreover, right-dominant subjects showed a greater right-left difference for the sternocleidomastoid, the trapezium, and the frontalis, left-dominant subjects for the trapezium and the frontalis.

Gesturing and self-contact of right and left halves of the body: relationship with eye-contact.

We examined the correlations among eye-contact, gesturing, and self-contact behaviors for 26 female university students during different neutral and emotional situations. There was a statistically significant positive correlation between eye-contact and right gesturing in two of four situations (rs, .37, .33) and a significant positive correlation (.33) between left self-contact and eye-contact during an initial relational contact.

Relationship between perceptual stability and reversal of perspective.

We have examined the relationship between the perspective reversal of both the Necker cube and the Schröder staircase and perceptual stability for 49 undergraduate students in psychology. There was a positive, statistically significant correlation of moderate magnitude between number of reversals of the Necker cube and differential score of perceptual stability, i.e., the difference between persistence of the visual image under right and left monocular viewing.

Body schema and lateralization.

To study some aspects of the relationship between body schema and lateralization, 44 female subjects between 19 and 39 yr. of age were measured using a test of accuracy of perception for the right and left halves of the body. Analysis gave three different groups: subjects with larger indexes of deviation on the left (56%), those with larger indexes of deviation on the right (31%), and others with no difference between right and left halves (11%).

Functional asymmetry in body perception and ocular dominance: a study of their interactions.

The relationships between ocular dominance and body perception (for the left and right body halves) were examined for 41 undergraduate female psychology students. The results indicate an interesting connection between the two phenomena. The four groups of subjects classified on the basis of ocular dominance (right, left, fluctuating and no dominance) showed statistically significant differences on one aspect of body perception, measured by the 'Difference Deviation Scores.' Also three groups of subjects classified on the basis of body perception (subjects with major perceptual error on the left or on the right, and subjects showing no difference in perception of the two body halves) showed statistically significant differences in ocular dominance.

Variations in perception of right and left halves of the body during the menstrual cycle.

To determine whether cerebral dominance in body perception changes during the menstrual cycle, we have examined the body perceptions of 55 women between 16 and 49 yr. of age. The women were placed in one of 4 groups (menstrual, follicular, luteal, premenstrual). The maximum dominance in body perceptions appeared in the follicular group and tended to disappear for luteal and premenstrual groups. A positive, statistically significant correlation of .25 was found between days of cycle and Deviation Index for the perception of the right half of the body.

Relationship between depression and self-contact.

To study the relationship between depression and self-contact, 25 male subjects between 30 and 35 yr. of age were administered Zung's Depression Questionnaire and measured for duration of self-contacts in a group situation and during the completion of a questionnaire on contact. Positive correlations of .73, .78, and .66 were obtained between duration of self-contact and depression score.

Dimensional approach to the study of sighting dominance.

This study proposes a dimensional and noncategorical approach to research on sighting dominance. Let us suppose that no eye dominance exists as well as results concerning right and left eye dominance. We modified a classical alignment test to measure along a continuum the ocular dominance of 47 female undergraduate students in psychology. Data seem to confirm the hypothesis emphasizing the presence of subjects with no ocular dominance as well as right- and left-dominance subjects. Moreover, another group has been classified. The subjects with fluctuating dominance show an alternation in their dominance. Thus an hypothesis of the functionality of the two hemispheres is suggested.

Relationship between perceptual stability, and sighting dominance.

A study was made of perceptual stability (in binocular, right and left monocular vision) and sighting dominance. 47 female psychology students served as subjects. The intention was to verify: (1) the hypothesis of asymmetry between the two eyes in the duration of the retinal image, which is indicative of sensory dominance; (2) the existence of a relationship between the two forms of dominance. The results seem to confirm the first hypothesis. Other relationships between sighting dominance and stability of image emerged. There was a positive correlation between sighting dominance and perceptual stability in binocular vision. There appear to be significant differences in perceptual stability depending on whether subjects show right, left, or no dominance.

Relationship between ocular dominance and field-dependence/independence.

This research was undertaken to study the relationship between field-dependence/independence and ocular (sighting) dominance for 37 female undergraduate subjects. The intention was to verify whether differences in field-dependence/independence exist between subjects showing right, left, intermediate, and fluctuating dominance on a test of ocular dominance.

Effects of body image on tactile sensitivity to a tickle:: a study of pregnancy.

A group of 20 middle-class women between 20 and 40 yr. of age and in the third trimester of pregnancy was compared with a control group of 20 non-pregnant women for cutaneous sensitivity (to a tickle) and for modifications of body schema which were hypothesized to occur during pregnancy. Latency and actual duration were considered in the perception of the tickle. Body schema were studied using two of Fisher's tests, Body Prominence and Body Cathexis. Pregnancy leads to modifications in sensitivity to tickle, specifically with regard to the right half of the body and to some extent in body schema.
