Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome↗

Regional distribution of dopamine D1 and D2 receptors in the nucleus accumbens of the rat.

Dopamine (DA) D1 receptor density was found to be significantly lower in the rostral than in the medial and caudal areas of the nucleus accumbens. This roughly followed the distribution of DA terminals. The distribution of DA D2 receptors did not follow the DA terminal distribution. DA D2 receptor number was lower in the ventrorostral and higher in the dorsomedial area than in any other area of the nucleus accumbens.

The influence of a relative support group on carers' emotional distress.

Research has shown that the supporters of relatives with dementia suffer high levels of stress and strain and it is the severity of stress which determines whether the dependent remains in the community or becomes institutionalized. This study evaluated the outcome of a 6-week, closed group, educational programme on reported levels of stress and strain on five supporters. Results showed an increase in the severity of problems presented by the carers whilst there was a decrease in their emotional distress. However, these results suggest that the carers in the present study were experiencing much higher levels of stress and strain than those of supporters in a larger investigation, where the eventual outcome was institutionalization of the dependents. The implications for the future of community care are discussed and a large scale survey of carers, including monitoring of eventual outcome for dependents, is recommended.

A family of bacteria-regulated, cecropin D-like peptides from Manduca sexta.

Manduca sexta larvae respond to bacterial challenge by synthesizing a set of antibacterial hemolymph proteins. We have purified and sequenced three members of a family of cecropin D-like bactericidal peptides and isolated a cDNA clone complementary to a closely related bactericidin. Results obtained by Northern hybridization and RNase protection analysis showed that the increased synthesis of bactericidins is due to induction of their mRNA levels and that the synthesis of these peptides is not strictly tissue-specific, in contrast to previous beliefs. Although fat body was a richer source, the relative amounts of bactericidin mRNA were significant in seven other tissues examined.

A quantitative assessment of the effects of malnutrition on behavioral development in laboratory mice.

The aim of this study was to compare the effects of malnutrition on behavioral development in mice with those due to heredity obtained in a previous study. To this end behavioral development was assessed using a developmental time scale which allowed comparison of the two studies. Pregnant B6D2F1/J mice were maintained on either a protein restricted or normal protein diet from Day 7 to Day 24 postconception, at which time the low protein group was returned to the normal diet until behavioral testing at Day 32. Behavioral development in the control group replicated the values obtained in previous studies, whereas the malnourished pups were retarded by 1.4 days. This was of the same order of magnitude as that reported previously for maternal inbreeding. Measures of maternal and pup body weight at birth, Day 24 and Day 32 indicated that although the malnourished animals were initially significantly lighter in weight they had recovered by Day 32. Litter size however, declined between birth and time of behavioral testing in the malnourished group.

Neuroendocrine dysfunction in temporal lobe epilepsy.

Since medial temporal lobe structures are involved in the modulation of endocrine function and temporal lobe epileptics commonly show personality changes that resemble endocrine disorders, the existence of neuroendocrine dysfunction in temporal lobe epileptics was investigated by comparing the response of serum luteinizing hormone levels with intravenous luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone infusion in patients and normal controls. Five of seven consecutive patients had response curves that fell almost entirely outside of the normal control range, and all seven had either baseline or peak values that were outside of the normal range. These findings suggest that hypothalamic-pituitary control of gonadotropin secretion may be altered among patients with temporal lobe epilepsy.
