[Pathogenetic role of the abstinence syndrome in the development of alcoholic encephalopathy (morpho-immunological research)].

In 219 male rats receiving for 8 months 10% ethanol solution instead of water either constantly or with multiple periods of discontinuation, the authors studied the morphological and immunological parameters in the period of the development of alcoholic encephalopathy and abstinence syndrome. Examination of the rat brain revealed chronic hemodynamic disorders and dystrophic-destructive changes in parenchymatous elements with superimposition of acute changes in the early stage of abstinence. Acute changes in the brain were attended by considerable disturbance of protein metabolism in neurons expressed in an altered rate of 3H-leucin inclusion. The development of acute morphological alterations in the brain tissue during abstinence was accompanied by the appearance of anticerebral antibodies in the blood of the animals. The obtained results represent new quantitative data on metabolic disorders of neuronal proteins and new immunologic data related to experimental alcoholic encephalopathy at different stages of abstinence. This evidence contributes to the understanding of the pathogenetic role of abstinence in the development of alcoholic encephalopathy.

Alcoholism↗

[Significance of clinico-immunologic correlations in different stages of alcoholism].

On the basis of clinico-immunological analysis (study of antibrain antibody), the authors validate the notion about the development of encephalopathic disturbances in the early post-drinking period of the first and second stages of alcoholism as a result of the integrated effect on the body at this period of alcoholic and metalcoholic toxicoses.

Alcohol Withdrawal Delirium↗

[Quantitative changes in peripheral blood thrombocytes in chronic alcoholics and experimental alcoholic intoxication in animals].

The time course of changes in peripheral-blood platelet count was examined in 129 alcoholics and 22 alcohol-intoxicated rats. The data obtained point to the existence of cause-and-effect relationships between the thrombocytopenia and thrombocytosis observed in various periods of abstinence on the one hand, and blood coagulation disturbances manifesting themselves in the forms of hemorrhages, thromboses and embolism, on the other.

Alcoholism↗

[Role of the abstinence syndrome in the development of alcoholic encephalopathy].

Using the complement fixation test cerebral antibodies were examined in the blood serum of 389 patients with alcoholism (Stage II). Patients with the alcoholic abstinence syndrome and those with acute psychoses of the abstinence period tended to display such antibodies significantly more frequently than the control group. This evidence points to a destructive organic (encephalopathic) nature of pathologic process in both cases. The use of acupuncture in controlling the abstinence syndrome is substantiated pathogenetically.

Adolescent↗

[Bone marrow plasma cell reaction in alcoholic patients].

A study of plasmocellular reactions of the bone marrow in alcoholism and alcoholic psychoses demonstrated an increase in the amount of plasmatic cells, a prevalence of mature plasmatic elements with distinctly marked basophilia and a reaction of clasmatosis. These facts indicate the functional preservation in alcoholism of the system of B cells, the derivatives of which are plasmatical elements; of an increase in the protein synthesis (including antibodies) as well as a prevalence of the so-called productive phase of immunogenesis over the adaptive.
